I have a Rotel RA-211 amp that I use for my computer. The right channel has dropped in volume (tried it with another source and the same problem). Any ideas or are we looking at something expensive here?

Probably a driver transistor I suspect but at this age it could be anything. Your local repair man will probably charge you £50 just for placing it on his counter and I don't believe the RA211 is worth much these days (that series were from the crossover-distortion days anyway IIRC)..

I don't know what to suggest as all the 1970's series of amps and many or most of the 1980's made models will need servicing by now, even the far eastern made ones which had better capacitors in those days.

For warranty and modern design reasons, you'd do a lot worse than looking for a recent NAD 321BEE or a cambridge or summat.

Unless you have access to test equipment or at the very least a test CD or record that outputs sign waves at a constant level & a multimeter & you know how to use them, or a friend who does :eyebrows: I'd suggest it might get expensive simply because you'll have to stick it into a repair shop.

Other things that might be handy include a circuit diagram & an oscilloscope.

The thing is this, you'll need to go poking about with test probes while the amp is powered up & if you uncomfortable with the idea of sticking your hands into a piece of gear with live mains present then this isn't a job for you.

It could be a problem with the pre amp section or power amp, testing is the only way of finding out :(
