Does anyone have any advice regarding saving money without putting it in the bank, the less that goes into my bank the better IMHO?

Better in the Bank than stashed elsewhere like under your bed or the like. It's not a good idea to keep large amounts of dosh lying around. How about a National Savings account at the post office..Interest rates are pretty good and on some accounts you don't have instant access to the money.

A lot depends on how long you want to save. I use an endowment policy for long term saving but returns are now crap and have some ISA's for things I now will loom up in the next few years. They are crap as well.
In fact you will be lucky to match the rate of inflation.Sorry.......

At the moment, one of the best would be premium bonds. Although it's a lottery, you buy the bonds and win money when your numbers come up. The good thing is that you get the same cash out when you finish them as you put in initially. The way that all savings schemes are performing at the moment, it's hardly any worse!

In this country you get no credit for having savings and owning your own property.

It seems that everything is stacked against the average worker who owns their own property and has a few savings. You're taxed on everything and because you have capital you get no help either. The free bus pass is said to be means tested in the future.

Because I struggled to own a property I don't have great pension provision. So it is likely that we will really struggle when we both stop working.

My work brings me into contact with people who have never worked, have abused drugs or alcohol (or both) have a roof over their heads, a free income and never seem to be down.

I think I got it wrong.

Spend it while it is still worth something!
