Marco

23C now outside and 19.5C indoors - 'cos we've kept all the curtains closed! It's the only way to properly keep the temp down and the house not turning into an oven:)

I just cut mine to 1 inch all round then trim the fringe off with the scissors that came with the clippers. Only takes 5 minutes. Not even had to re-charge the clippers yet and I've had them almost a year.

struth
01-06-2021, 17:48
Usually I use a number 3 comb which I think is 10mm. If its really warm I go lower to a 2.

No1 for me at the back and sides, then finished neatly with scissors. Clippers don't go anywhere near the top - that's what accentuates the 'thug look'. Scissors and comb only there, then finished off with wax or gel, or at least that's what the pretty little hairdresser who comes round does!;)

Scissor cut with clippers only being used to taper the neck in. My barber stops at regular intervals to check he’s getting the length right. I had booked today but decided I could get another week out of it. I use a little gel on occasions but more often than not my hair behaves itself.

I asked her, and this is what she said:

I might just grow me some bees, but I'd leave the sweet stuff for somebody else, but then on the other hand I would keep the wax, melt it down, pluck some floss and swish it around! I'd have me a crop, and it'd be on top, that's why I'm moving to Montana.

No Idea what she was on about

Drove down to Brighton to pick up youngest, 28.5c according to car temp display - nice to be back in Suffolk 26c :)

Does feel a little "clammy", wouldn't be surprised if there was thunder later. Just been enjoying a beer as reward for driving round trip in one go - garden is delightful, so quiet and green.

Macca

It's been dry for days now, and some days have been warm. Today's not been bad.

Have others experienced a dump of sand over cars - which often comes from places like the Sahara? Our cars have been covered in the stuff.

Macca
04-06-2021, 16:57
No sand here.

Barry
04-06-2021, 17:18

Macca
04-06-2021, 17:52
No rain here, it's like the Bahamas. Only without the sand.

Marco
04-06-2021, 19:23
Yup, must be a 'darn sarf' thing, as it's been bone dry all day, and sunny and warm!:)

Always get a fine film of 'Sahara dust' sitting on the surface of my car though, no matter the weather. Black really shows it up!

Marco.

Marco
05-06-2021, 07:54

26c is where I start thinking it's hot.

Marco
07-06-2021, 17:36
Broadly I agree, although that doesn't stop 21C, indoors, feeling uncomfortable to sleep in at night (as I hate warm, stuffy bedrooms), or 25C outdoors, equally so, especially when humidity is high:)

Marco.

Macca
07-06-2021, 17:59
I'm fine sleeping in 21C, over 25C it gets a bit uncomfortable for me. When I had an attic room it could be 35C in the summer! You get used to it after a while, your body adjusts.

Marco
07-06-2021, 18:16
Nope, I couldn't breathe indoors in that heat! I find breathing difficult in stuffy conditions. Were there any windows in that room, or what was the ventilation like? I'd have to sleep elsewhere (even outside), or die.. At best, I'd get no sleep whatsoever.

When it gets to 24/25C in our upstairs bedroom, as it surely will soon, I'll be sleeping outside on the lounger in our [locked] backyard! Perfectly comfy, much healthier, and rather nice and relaxing, sleeping under the stars - even when it rains (just put the brolly up)!:D

Lol, no, aside from a roof (which will be added in due course) our backyard is fully enclosed and secluded within our grounds, partly by our house, walled garden and garage, all of which surround it - and as long as the garden gate and garage door are locked, it's very safe and totally private at any time of the day. That's why we enjoy having our meals there so much:)

Indeed, you could sit there naked and no-one would know, apart from passing birds and aircraft... During the summer months, the princess doesn't need too much encouragement either, testing out that theory!:bum::eek:

Our bedroom is on the south facing side of the house. If it gets too hot, even with all the windows open, we simply de-camp to one of the bedrooms on the north facing side.

In general, if the temperature goes above 30C, I just 'shut down', and can only think of seeking shelter and/or a cold drink! Ironically, despite that I have been to dozens of countries where the temperature has been above 30C (peaking to 40C), yet I am prepared with plenty of water in my canteen and a good sun hat.

However I have to confess I suffered heat stroke whilst trekking in the desert in Mauritania. Didn't know it at the time, but my companions there said I started talking 'gibberish' (yet coherently - my speech was not slurred). They sat me down under a shady tree, I poured a litre of water over my head, and I had a kip for about 20 minutes. After that I was right as rain, but I learnt my lesson - that is keep drinking water, whether you feel thirsty or not!

Lol yeah, good point, and also somewhere else to turn pink!

No, she's thinking more 'open and airy', along the lines of a pergola, to facilitate outdoor dining when it's raining during the summer:)

She also WANTS a firepit for outdoor parties during the autumn/winter, which I guess will tie in with the bar/patio area and pizza oven, and of course hot tub...

You mean any more than usual?:D;)

No, interesting tales there... I've never been outside of Europe, so I guess never really experienced genuinely searing heat. The warmest was 38C in Pisa, last time we were on holiday in Italy, and walking in it for quite a while, which nearly killed me, until I found a shaded ice-cream parlour!

If I have to choose between existing in severe temperature conditions, I'm more comfortable and suited to the freezing than the roasting!! Quite simply, it's far easier to warm up when you're cold, than cool down when you're hot, especially when you're naked and so have no more clothes to remove!:D

Nope, I couldn't breathe indoors in that heat! I find breathing difficult in stuffy conditions. Were there any windows in that room, or what was the ventilation like?
.

There was a huge skylight which I would leave open all the time, day and night, but it made no difference. You could climb out the skylight and there was a little bit of flat roof to sit on, but not really enough to sleep out on, although I did consider it. I used to sit out there in the evening with a can on the go though.

Been plenty of hot places, Mexico, the Caribbean, Nevada, California, but the hottest was in Europe - San Sebastian in Spain. 44C in the shade. Now that was crippling.

Wow, that's just madness... Thank God now for air-con, eh? Although, that won't help when you're outside.

Actually, outside in the fresh air (or as fresh as it can be in 30C+ temps) I'm not too bad, as you can always grab a super-cold beer or Coke and either drink it and/or place it against your forehead, to reduce your body temp, walk about or whatever, but indoors at night lying in bed when there's little to no light inside the bedroom, and it's stuffy and you're trying to get to sleep, the same (or similar) heat just seems much more 'suffocating', although I accept some of that effect may be psychological.

So how do you cope in extreme cold conditions, if indeed you've ever experienced such?

Coldest I've been out in was in Austria in December 1991, where it was -16C. Breathing in that sort of air was something else.. And multiple layers of thermal clothing, especially on your extremities, is vital in order not to get frostbite, and also somewhat surreal when accompanied by clear blue skies and bright sunshine - it's certainly invigorating!:)

I worked for a while in a meat warehouse -28C. Then moved to refrigerated which was balmy by comparison, 4C.

I avoid the cold if I'm not getting paid to be in it though. You wouldn't see me going on holiday somewhere cold. I did go to Scotland a couple of years back but in fairness I had no idea it would be as bad as it was.

Lol, no worries... But that's where you and I are different. Scotland's great - just wrap up well! The air quality up north, due to a complete lack of pollution, is fab and very good for you, and the scenery just stunning.

Both Del and I *LOVE* the snow and holidaying in countries that lend themselves well to 'winter wonderlands', as we're fundamentally not beach people, although she wears a bikini quite well:)

In that respect, it'll be interesting to see what it's like when I take her to the Ice Hotel, in Sweden, for one of our anniversaries (I've yet to decide which one), and actually sleeping on a bed made of ice!:D

Walking outside after an hour in a supermarket during a heatwave is a shock to the system.

Marco

Yeah, much like getting off an air-conditioned plane when landing in a hot country... It's like walking into an oven - dreadful feeling! And also fundamentally unhealthy, which is one of the reasons we're against installing air-con at home.

I don't even like using it in the car, preferring simply to drive with the windows open, and just circulating the air, which coincidently is why we'll likely fit some type of ceiling fan when we do up our main bedroom, in order to manage the heat better during the summer months:)

I bought an evaporation mini-air cooler last year. Not tried it yet, but when (if?) it gets scorching, I'll give it a try. It'll probably be useless, but you don't know unless you give it a go. (no, I won't put tap water in it :))

Marco

a bucket of ice sat in front of a fan will work as well as an air con....til ice melts of course:eyebrows:

Yup, but by then I'd be in the land of nod! When the room's at our preferred temp (around 15C), I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow, then wake up 9/10 hours later.. I don't really notice the heat while I'm asleep; it's *getting* to sleep when it's hot that's the problem. So if I had a 'window' of 30 mins or so of coolness, with a bucket of ice and a fan, which would be just enough to bring the temp down to allow me to get to sleep, problem solved!:)

During the summer months, unless I go outside, it's more like climbing the stairs to the bedroom, feeling the hot air getting worse the higher up I go, then entering the bedroom, which is like an oven, sweat pissing off of me...

Then trying to get to sleep, twisting and turning, usually failing miserably, then either going downstairs to sleep on the sofa, where it's usually 2-3C cooler, or outside on the lounger, where it's usually a good 2-3C cooler again, but I rarely get more than 6 hours of proper deep sleep, and suffer for it accordingly (as I can't really function on less than 8 hours)

As I've said before, our lodge is a 'winter house', where it's really quaint and cosy with the log burner on during the winter, but in the summer months it can be a nightmare. The combination of very thick sandstone walls (which absorb the heat like a sponge and retain it for days, even when the sun goes away), relatively low ceilings and small (leaded glass) windows, which can only be opened so far, and which we can't open fully at night, as we don't let the cats out, makes it not the best place to be in warm weather!

The only saving grace is that we have stone floors (with rugs) throughout the house, which helps keep things cooler - goodness knows what it'd be like with fitted carpets!

Hey-ho... Good job we only get a couple of months a year of 25-30C temps, but you'll appreciate why although we enjoy the summer, for various reasons, unlike some we don't dread the autumn and winter months, and with it, cooler temperatures!;)

Yups, I get all that, and that's cool. I was thinking more in terms of Geoff, as he's much fitter than you, and so wouldn't want to see him stuck in the same rut for years with getting his food delivered, just because he's got used to it over the last year or so.

Just under 20C and rather muggy, dry but cloudy (sun occasionally breaking through) and with only 5% chance of rain.. So just out washing the car, then later I'll be taking my dad out for lunch to a nice country pub, although he'll be hobbling in and out of there with his stick!:D

Warm, sunny with light cloud, drier than a bone on a dry day of celebrations for all things dry.

Should hit mid 20s today, warmer over the weekend apparently.

Lol - nice one! Admit it though, have you used your scope to spy on any 'hot chicks'... Must be a few topless bathers nearby, in this heat, thinking that they're 'safe' behind their fences...:D:eyebrows:

..and that’s why you should never be allowed to have a telescope Marco! [emoji13]

Cheers, mate. I'm sure he will. We've not been out for a meal for about a month, and I'm taking him to one of his fav places, where you can sit outside next to a beautiful lake, and the local ales and food are top notch:)

Decided to get one of these to keep our bedroom cool during these hot nights: https://evapolar.com/en/evalight/

Result? Absolutely brilliant! I have it 'trained' on my face. It's like having a lovely gentle cool breeze accompanying you all night, plus it takes the dryness/stuffiness out of the air and improves air quality accordingly, making breathing easier in stuffy conditions. Runs near-silently, too!

It's made a massive difference, so should be able to get a decent night's sleep now without having to kip outside:D Highly recommended if, like me, you suffer at night in bed during the hot weather.

Tomorrow will be a big test though, as it's set to be an utter scorcher!!

Yesterday if was a very comfortable 21c with a light sea breeze. One of the benefits of living close to the sea whilst inland it's baking.

The Sun is shining brightly in a cloudless blue sky this fine Monday morning, so every chance of a repeat.

Long may it continue but, as ever in this fine land, probably by the end of the week it will slash it down.

Told ya! You should've pressed it into service before now, mate. Enjoy:)

As for the water reservoir, much will depend on how hard you run the unit. However, in my case, easily 5-6 hours. Anyway, when it needs topped up, you simply top it up - no biggie.
