I'm not writing a list out, but I'd not want about 3/4 of those.
The list's obviously wrong, there's no Deep Purple.
I've got the vast majority of it on vinyl and/or on CD, and heard all of it. For me though, these sorts of 'Top' lists are often meaningless and predictable, not to mention rather mainstream and boring..
"Top" based on who's criteria?:hmm:
Admittedly, some are true 'classics' and worthy of a mention, but these lists are not terribly imaginative and mostly (with a couple of exceptions) the music blokes 'of a certain age' would listen to regularly, and who qualify as unrelenting creatures of habit, with little desire to expand or update their 'musical horizons':ner:
Check Berry - Great Twenty Eight
Oh, and who's this "Check" dude - is he any relation to Chuck?;)
Marco.

Only meant to be a bit simple of entertainment, Marco. I’m sure we all realise some of these list are a bit arbitrary, this one I believe is based on volume sales of some sorts.
I presume you fit into the “music blokes of ‘a particular age’ you describe as you have all of them, lucky you.
Cheers

Lol - it was a tongue-in-cheek remark, so don't get all bitchy with me, baby!:ner:;)
Chillax...:)
No, I don't have all of them, mate. I've *heard* all of them. But yes, I have the vast majority of those albums on some musical format, but a great deal of it I haven't listened to for some time, after having played it to death 'back in the day'!
These days, I mostly prefer listening to something different.
Marco.

So tell me about 'Trout Mask Replica', and why it always appears in these lists.
But like you, I hate these aspirational "lists": '1001 Things to Do Before You Die'; '1001 Places to Visit Before You Die'; '1001 Natural Wonders of the World to See Before You Die'; '1001 Curries You Should Eat before you Die'; '1001 Positions as Described in the Karma Sutra You Should Try Before You Die', .... . They are there for those who have no imagination, or sense of adventure.
Ha - we're on the same page here!:D
TMR? Probably the Zappa-esque album cover, which may be seen as somewhat 'out there', and it was from the 'swinging 60s'!
Like you say, there are far better CB albums, such as Unconditionally Guaranteed:)

It did not come across as ‘tongue-in-cheek’ more as criticism of the thread and those that looked at these type of lists.
As I said I put the thread up for a bit of fun if people were interested. There are lots of albums I would personally include in my top 100 not there, including some more recent, and some in there I would remove, but then it would be my list and not a list of most popular by sales(which I think it is meant to be).
Maybe I should have made it top 100 prog rock albums of all time.
Happy listening.[emoji846]

heard 63% own about 50% of them - not much for U2, The Clash, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison.
Quite a few I wouldn't include in a top 100 in a million years. I mean U2? Seriously? If I had to include two of theirs - and it would be at gunpoint - it would be 'Boy' and 'War.'
The Clash are equally over-rated.
'Check' Berry was of course one of Chuck's cousins, along with Marvin.
Trout Mask Replica (got a mint vinyl) is over-indulgent crap, I'd have gone with 'Clear Spot'
Glaring omissions-
The Stone Roses
Black Sabbath
Hot Buttered Soul
Siamese Dream
All of Steely Dan's albums

No, never been keen on Genesis.
'Aja' at least should be in there. Just ludicrous that there are two U2 albums, shit ones too, and no Dan.
And why are there compilation albums? That makes no sense. 'Legend'? - Should be 'Catch A Fire' or maybe 'Uprising.'
Van Morrison? Over-rated. At least they didn't include any Leonard Cohen. Or London fucking Grammar.
Have to stop now it's making me angry.
Ive never agreed with any top 100's in anything so why would this be any different... Its just some one's, or some cleaks' idea of music... I mean, no Electric Warrior?? and no homesick James:doh:

I think you have to accept that it’s supposed to be on worldwide record sales, however I find that odd as there are quite a few albums I can think of that sold vast amounts not in there. Dark Side of the Moon comes to mind, and I’m pretty sure Genesis sold the odd album in vast quantities as did Wings and ELO.
Don’t get angry it’s just bit of fun.[emoji846]

Of course it's a bit of fun, Adrian - what else could it be?:)
The intended vibe of my post was that of a piss take, and yes criticism, but not of those who look at such lists, but who compile them, which coincidentally seems to be the consensus! And also those who's sole idea of great music is largely the same old tired and unimaginative list of 'usual suspects'
Anyway, as you were:D

Well at least it prompted me to pull out my copy of 'Bitches Brew' and listen to all four sides. Interesting - I found myself enjoying two of the sides; so that is a 100% improvement. :)
Yes it can be a 'difficult' listen. I rather like it though (and his other 'out there' stuff). I've always admired his ability to make the music he produces interesting and thought-provoking, whilst traversing a whole gamut of music styles. Unlike that of other artists, it's not just samey and predictable!:)
Were you not tempted to follow it with some Sun Ra, after your 'result' with BB?;)
I'd like to have been smoking some of the shit that boy was on...:peace::D
Marco.
I used to have a copy of 'Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra', but can't find it - so I must have given it away.
Coincidentally, I was watching a programme on BBC4 last night about a cultural phenomenon called "Afrofuture", in which clips of Sun Ra appeared.
Like many exponents of 'free jazz', such as Pharaoh Sanders; Ornette Coleman; John and Alice Coltrane; Albert Ayer etc., Sun Ra's music needs time to absorb and understand.

Just noticed this top 100 from Rolling Stone is quiet arbitrary as Marco indicated.
"The RS 500 was assembled by the editors of Rolling Stone, based on the results of two extensive polls. In 2003, Rolling Stone asked a panel of 271 artists, producers, industry executives and journalists to pick the greatest albums of all time. In 2009, we asked a similar group of 100 experts to pick the best albums of the 2000s. From those results, Rolling Stone created this new list of the greatest albums of all time."
So it really depends who they asked and their preferences. Even other lists based on records sale volumes seem to vary somewhat.
if it was based on record sales it would be a lot different. You'd have trash like Bat Out Of Hell and Dirty Dancing in there.
Top Ten Best Selling Albums Worldwide (All-Time)
Thriller (1982)
Back in Black (1980)
Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
Bat out of Hell (1977)
Rolling Stones Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 (1976)
Dirty Dancing Soundtrack (1987)
The Bodyguard Soundtrack (1992)
Rumours (1977)
Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977)
Millennium (1999)
At least the Rolling Stone list gets it about half right. Asking music journalists was probably where they went wrong. Most of them are clueless about proper music. Especially anyone who worked for the NME. Or 'Q'.
Trout Mask Replica (got a mint vinyl) is over-indulgent crap, I'd have gone with 'Clear Spot'
Good shout. That's my other favourite:)
Oh and I love London Grammar, but I wouldn't dream of putting them on a list like this!
Anyway, never mind anything else - where's Ziggy Stardust (unless I missed it), or indeed ANY of Bowie's output, who for me was a true innovator and genius?
Marco.
Yes they are missing Bowie which is ludicrous but then they had to find space for U2 and The Clash.
Would be better to get rid of the Jazz into a separate list, there's loads of great jazz albums you could easily do a separate top 100 for them.
Get rid of the compilations too as they don't count as albums. 'Rumours' could go too as there's only a couple of Christine Mcvie songs on that that make it worthwhile at all. 'A waste of the world's resources' as my mate used to say.
I used to have a copy of 'Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra', but can't find it - so I must have given it away.

Indeed... It's always a chillout late-night listen for me. I have quite a few of his albums. I often prefer 'free jazz' to the trad stuff, which sometimes can be dreary as hell, unless it's done by a true master, Coltrane or such like.
If you'd like to hear something more modern, in the genre of 'avant-garde' jazz/psychedelic (although in sections it also crosses over to what could be classed as 'wold music'), check out Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnZ4db3aqB0&list=OLAK5uy_mkQXq8YaKIoiELCxYw_LyTeCX8bI9PDks
Not an 'easy listen' either, but awesome, late-night (lights down low) with a nice glass of wine, on a good system:cool:
'Land of Ra' is stunning... Just pin your ears back and enjoy the ride!;)
Marco.
So it was but should have been Young Americans or Station to Station if you ask me.
yeah well im guessing that was a best seller along with hunky...
Ziggy was in it...
Ah, must've missed it then.. The list is still largely bollox, though.
Marco.

Well as we are all self appointed experts on here then I think we should create our own top 100 albums of all time, now that would be interesting[emoji23]

I can't really be bothered. To be of any interest and use, it would have to be something like 300 albums suggested by at least 100 Members here. Then we would need some software to go through those lists and find those albums with the greatest overlap - and hopefully come up with the 'Top 100'.
For a start absolutely nothing by Genesis, Yes, Mott the Hoople or Marc Bolan will be on my list.
We could each contribute a top ten, see how that works out. Probably get a 100 different albums out of that if enough people contribute.
It would be utterly impossible for me to come up with a 'top ten'.

Sorry Marco, I've been a bit busy so have only just got around to listening to it.
Yes I like it, it's a bit of a mish-mash of styles (but has nothing to do with free jazz), but nonetheless has its charms. Deserves a re-listen. :)
These things do have aspects of interests to them, but if sales alone are the only criterion, that is of very limited value.
Sales for a given period may be insightful sociologically, bearing in mind that sales are always in the context of a social zeitgeist.
I have been thinking for some time of something a little different, a thread in which we write about the albums which have most affected and influenced us, and an explanation of what the affecting aspects were, and why we were so affected.
I have bought all of my music for reasons of being quite deeply moved and involved in it, and I wonder if for a given album others have had similar responses to my own.
Good post Dennis and a good idea.
Why not start things off with an album of yours, and I'm sure others will follow?
I own 12 and that’s because the other 88 are… well let’s just say I wouldn’t listen to them at all.
Just counted up, I've got 35 of them.

Got 21 of them, though not all on vinyl.
There's 18 artists in the list that I've never heard of, let alone heard anything by them.
Plenty of others I would cut - Nick Cave, Phil Collins, Manic Street Preachers, Massive Attack, they'd all be out for a start.
Anyone who thinks 'Exodus' is Bob's best album clearly hasn't heard all of them.
I like the Daft Punk album but top fifty? No way. Neil Young should be 'Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere' not 'After The Goldrush.'
'Abbey Road' fair enough, got to be one Beatles album and they're all a mixed bag. I'd have gone 'Revolver' myself.

well who the bloody hell is Michael Kiwanuka for a start? Is it 'world music'? I can't be doing with world music. I prefer to stick to music I've been culturally indoctrinated to like.
Never heard of 'Weyes Blood' - is that a bloke's name or a band? LCD Soundsystem, Thundercat, Interpol, Bon Iver, Burial, The XX, Animal Collective, Sigur Ross, The Congos, Slint, My Morning Jacket, Isis, Flying Lotus, Earthheater Phoenix. Never heard of any of them.
Disagree. Abbey Road my favourite

I liked that Massive Attack album when it came out but it got played too much and really there's not a lot to it musically, so just got bored with it. And the follow up was more of the same, only not as good.

Just for your and Grant’s info, he is pretty well known, and has won several awards, I would classify his work as a mix of soul(traditional) and R&B(traditional). I would initially have a listen to the album Love and Hate, the follow up just called by his name is good, but not so good on vinyl(odd mix). He is a highly respected musician and song writer.

I agree about the Mezzanine album, I still quite like it, but it has been done to death. Anyway, imo they peaked at the start with "Blue Lines" then slowly declined in an up and down kind of way.
