Hi, my name is Mylo and I live in the North West. I've found your group as I have been researching vintage Tannoy Cheviots as I have an opportunity to buy four of them at a decent price. It's a bit of a leap in the dark for me as my current system is just Rocket 6's out of Traktor S4 MK3 which also has my SL11210's running through it. I don't as yet own any power amps etc. I know at least that all four need refoaming. I'm going to have a listen to them this week anyway and unless don't work will probably just get them. Anyway, really is a mind boggling amount of sometimes conflicting information out there about what to do with these so it looks like I will become a bit of a regular on here so please bear with me and excuse my lack of knowledge.

Cheers

Hello Mylo. Welcome to AOS.

Vintage Tannoys are popular here. Why not start a thread in our Past Masters section and ask any questions you may have.

There are five versions of the Chatsworth model all use 12 inch drivers. The earliest had the Monitor red unit, then the Monitor Gold driver with pleated cone surround, then Monitor Gold with rubber roll surround, next Monitor Gold with foam roll surround and finally Monitor HPD, also with foam surround. The cone surrounds on the first three don't perish and are likely to be OK. If those you are interested in have perished surrounds, best not use them, as the coils may rub and get damaged. They are comparatively easy to fit new foams to.

Enjoy the forum,
Geoff.

Thanks. Geoff it's the Cheviot's I'm thinking of getting not the Chatsworth. I am confused though because I'm reading about people binning the Cheviot cabinets and putting the drivers in other cabinets which may or may not have names .. I'm not sure yet :)

Ah, I misread your post. The Cheviot superseded the Chatsworth.

The Cheviot cabinet is OK and can benefit from internal bracing. Some like to put the drivers in larger boxes, although the standard ones will give a usable 30Hz.

Thanks. I'm not going to create a thread until I have them but if you had a minute could you take a look at this picture of one of them I have been given as I do not know what kind of damage this might have caused? https://ibb.co/BBQvHpV

I am unable to help you with your questions Myles, but this enlargement of your photo may help others who are far more knowledgeable about Tannoy speakers to in turn help you.

Some will say new cone and surround assemblies are needed, at some cost. Lockwood Audio could probably assist with this.

I personally, would fit new foam cone surrounds myself. It needs patience and care, but is not too tricky and can be done for around £50 for a pair. You may find adhesive residue on the cones from the sticky tape, which may be able to be cleaned off possibly with cotton buds and cellulose thinners.

If you buy the speakers, check first that the central horn tweeter is working as they are expensive to sort.

It's certainly an interesting project, especially if you get two pairs at a decent price.

Brilliant Geoff, that's really cool advice. Wow, it would be amazing if they only need new foam and I can do the job myself at that price. I was thinking I might have to lose a pair to finance getting one pair up to spec. Hopefully it should be fairly obvious to check that the central horn tweeter is working on them.

If you go ahead, I can advise on methods and materials.

Hey Marco and Barry, sorry my fault. I put them on the first free hosted site I came across so put a expiry time limit on them. The photos are in the thread I created here .. https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?72984-Tannoy-Cheviot-New-Project
I hope you are having a good day :)
