Putting several items up for sale – please PM me if interested in any of them.
First off, a pair of Meridian ‘Legacy’ products, in the form of the 101 preamplifier and matching FM tuner.
Preamplifier – fitted with what I believe is the MM phono module...I have used it with an MM cartridge and it ‘sounds’ as it should (i.e. loading seems correct). I’ll spare any descriptions about what it is, as I think many here will have heard about this unit and anyone interested will certainly look to be informed.
This preamplifier is in okay cosmetic condition, but certainly has marks and scars commensurate with age. Someone has put some tape across the back, which I have removed, but there is still residue present. This could be improved further, but I wanted to leave cosmetic decisions to the new owner. Lettering on the front is in very good, readable condition. A bit of a ‘classic’, but it will not be priced as such – it is a 40 year old preamp, but one that works and does, to this day, look neat and different (in a good way, in my eyes). Alone, I am asking for £150 for this unit.
Tuner – matches the preamplifier and has the same delightful tape residue across the back! Again, silk screening across the front is in very good condition and it can take its power from the preamplifier. Of note, the illumination is not working at the moment, but I suspect this will be down to a failed bulb, which could be replaced or swapped for something like an LED. Casework is in better nick than the preamplifier, but again, this is 40 plus years old and like most of us past this milestone, is showing some wear and tear (although its life could be about to begin!). Alone, I am asking for £150 for this unit as well. If you want both preamplifier and tuner, then Ill sell them together for £250, plush shipping. Am happy to drive to meet within reason, for a nominal fuel contribution.
Both units are compact and should be relatively straightforward to pack.
Last offering – Jecklin Float electrostatic ear...speakers! (not headphones, I am told :-) ). I have owned these from new, which was circa 1996/7 and they were bought from the Cornflake Shop in London. I do not think I have the packaging for them, but I will check my loft, as it was up there at some point in time. Again, these could be packaged securely or I’ll meet within reason, for a nominal fuel contribution.
A bit more about these earspeakers. Never – under any circumstances – must these be worn in public. Only immediate family should – if push comes to shove – be allowed to see you in these. I think they make the wearer look like a Cyberman, but other insults/ridicule can be applied! That said, they have the potential to sound superb and can be operated via a power amplifier of your choice.
I re-foamed the headset about 12 months ago, so it is looking mighty fine. Sadly, there is a but. They are working and have been working recently, however, increasing the volume causes the left earspeaker to distort – at lower volumes it seems to work okay. Fearing an issue with the panels, I swapped them over and the problem remained...the good news being the left panel – now on the right – worked fine. I believe, therefore, that the issue lies somewhere in the energiser. Online, one can find details of components, values and details around trouble-shooting and, if you are in a position to pay, Quad in Germany can fix them. I simply do not possess the expertise required to replace components, but someone with knowledge and time could get these units singing...when on song, they are quite remarkable. I am looking for £250 for these, which reflects the issues they have...in the right hands, they are a bargain and they are fixable.
