Power Filtering Bypassing Capacitors

What's the deal amp building guru's out there?

I will soon be taking delivery of a preamp with replaceable/up-gradable power filtering bypassing caps.

Knowing sweet nothing as to how these will affect the sound I have no idea which ones would be good to try. The rating can be anywhere from 0.01uf to 10uf which just seems utter madness to me but I'm assured it is correct. 400v rating or over is the only other requirement.

I've had positive results changing coupling caps to some nice Mundorf Silver/Gold/Oil supreme 4.7uF (originals were 2.2uF) but regarding power bypassing caps I don't know if higher is better or what material affects the sound in what way.

Info, advice and recommendations much appreciated.

Looking for best bang for buck really, wouldn't expect to spend over £30 or so but if it's worth it the budget can certainly be increased, just not sure if it's worth it!

they are for removing noise between mains power and ground.. lower value ones if you want to remove high freq, and vis a vis

Thanks Grant, that's very useful info. I'm afraid to say I didn't really google it properly, just lazily came here to ask to be honest. So I suppose it would be the best idea to listen if there is any high/low frequency noise in the signal and go from there.

I just wonder if some are of a higher quality than others and if this makes any difference. For example are there some that filter out ALL noise better or add a particular 'signature' to the sound? Probably getting quite subjective at this point though.

They act like a short at high frequencies and an open at low frequencies. In this situation, AC is able to get through, but DC is blocked.
