There is a solution & that is not to buy mainstream stuff ;) I honestly haven't listened to a radio deliberately since 1998  The stuff i tend to buy on CD is by independant record companies, not the big labels & the quality shows :)

Radio is by far the worst offender simply because they are catering for a mobile audience, those in cars need a low dynamic range or they'll lose half of what would be going on due to wind, engine, exhaust & road noise.

It really struck home to me how much the music is compressed on the radio when i bought a certain album that i had recorded a track of on a HIFI VHS video player. This was before CD recorders became available but still had a 90Db+ signal to noise ratio. The track was almost unrecognisable compared to the proper CD version. Mega compression :spew:

Fortunately, my musical tastes are very far from mainstream. :)

Most modern cars have very good stereos in them I think, more than good enough to show up the bad broadcasts. I said that I thought Radios 1 and 2 were slightly better these days, but it depends on the time of day and the presenting/engineering team, as the compression starts in the studio control-room and goes downhill from there right into the PCM bay with Optimod in between :(
