I thought i'd get this up here since we appear to have a good load of vinyl aficionados on this site ;)

What i have here is a very good example of an SME 3009 Mk2, not sure if it's the improved version or not. The thing is in it's original box & has been since before 1982 (read later late 70's), this is the year I & my parents moved to this present address so i know it hasn't been used since then. It has been used for low hours previous to this as well :) Father didn't use his HIFI system that often & he probably did more when i was a sprat & went in to have a listen on the occasional weekend, trust me i was there for every listening ;) Leak Sandwich 600s' & Quad 303 & 33 combined with the deck & pickup arm & shure cartridge were a revelation when joe average was listening to a music centre (i loved it even as a kid). So it has low hours on it as well as being boxed since the early 80s! It was probably boxed before this in reality as domestic bliss tends to be the world of fairy tales & the HIFI room became a seperate bedroom for mother in around 1977. So lets say it has been unused since the late 70's ;)
It was used with a Goldring G99 rim drive turntable that might well be here somewhere, no idea as the house is stuffed full of stuff

Anyway, i'm open to sensible offers! I'm not going to name a price as frankly i don't have much of a clue what it's worth (though looking at ebay i'd suggest £150+). What i can tell you is i'll send it via RM special delivery (fully insured) & that will be included in the price that i accept. If anyone wants to talk to me about it then PM me & i'll give you my phone number so we can have a chat. Best to ring before 8PM in the evening though as i like a bit of a 2363 ;)

Here come some big pics, a few of them to :lolsign:

This following pic made me unbox it again! The marks on the counterweight are just a bit of muck, they aren't scratches! :) It's not that mucky but a bit of a clean will get the thing looking like new. The only marks that id say are more permanent are one or two on the tonearm itself & these are only visible at certain angles where light is reflecting. It's as good as you'll get in all honesty :)

There is another SME headshell somewhere in this house, if i find it i'll post it on to the buyer free of charge ;) I'll find it but it might take some time

Best offer over £150 secures it, lets give it a month or so :) The whole lot is here as far as i know, any questions please feel free to ask :)

General comment here - your pictures are bloody enormous, and I've got to bugger about in order to make anything you post with pictures in it readable.

Any chance you can make the pictures a bit smaller?

Many thanks.....

Edit - I see you host your pictures on Photobucket - if you make your pictures medium size there then it works well for just about everyone.

Hi Chris, i thought that the bigger pics will be better for people to decide on the general condition of the item, you see i'm not trying to hide anything!

Good point though, you want them smaller & less quality then i'll come up with the goods  Nah, not really...

I'd have loaded 4000 pixel images, but i thought that might take the p*ss ;)

It's not the improved, reduced mass version, which may actually be a better thing for many of today's cartridges..

Interesting that a top end cartridge at the time the manual pics were taken was what looks like a Shure M55E, although it could be an M91E judging by the depth of the stylus housing......

The pictures are bl**dy wonderful and it's because the pics are so good that I can confirm the cartridge is a Shure M55E.:trust:

The cartridge SME used at the time to promote their arm was definitely a Shure M55E. In fact it was SME's endorsement of the M55E (SME and Shure were mutual distibutors on one another's products) that prompted me to buy one for use in my SME, replacing the M3D (pace Marco).

I still have a sample of the M55E and expect to put it through its paces soon. Yes Dave (DSJR), I do know what you think of it, but I still want to give it a whirl.

Hi Chris, from now on any picture i take i'll downsize to 1000 pixels wide maximum ;) I understand what you mean as you have to pan left & right which is as you say a real pain. These can stay large so people can see what's up for sale with a decent image.

Yep, M55E :)

Thank you for letting me know, i honestly didn't have a clue :eyebrows:

Hi

Did this actually sell? If not I would be very interested for £150. If not, anyone got another to move on?

Thank you
Ian

You know, I couldn't give a toss whether old SME's are any good or not (of course they are :)), but they're such wonderful things to handle and USE... A tragedy this standard of finish costs so much today to achieve..

Hi Ian. Yes, I bought this one.

Hi Dave - As this is my first SME arm I'm well happy with it. The quality of the manufacture and finish is absolutly superb, I was really supprised for it's age. Real top quality!
