But interesting hi fi items you nearly bought but didnt; and now many years later, you really wished you did.

For me, it was about 15 years ago and a local hi fi shop was closing down. Amongst the goodies they had available were these 2 power amps.

Both were marked up for over 2 grand, but some discussion with the shop owner revealed that £1200 in drinking vouchers would secure either of them.:) After listening to both for over an hour, I was totally at a loss as to which one I preferred.

At the time, I was in the merchant navy and said I would return in 2 weeks time to buy one of them, as I couldnt decide which to have. Foolishly, I didnt pay a deposit and upon my return, both had been sold.:steam:

Today, either of these would be worth a small fortune and both are hugely desireable amps. Strangely, I still dont know which I would choose. The openess, clarity and detail from the Lumleys was sublime and stunning, but the power and authority of the Citation was enough to cause embarassment in the trouser department.:eek:

For me it was back in about 1999 before i got the Vovd.5 , i had the chance of a full blown original Voyd reference with a helius cyalene and IO cart ! all for £ 4000 an absolute bargain in my book .

On the other hand i probably would have had to sell it a few years later , as my circumstances changed .

Still it would have been awesome .

Ive always wanted to own a AVI lab series amplifier, a bit of a muscle amp that is supposed to go hand in glove with my Neutron speakers.
As you probably know , AVI dont make them any more and 2nd hand they go for £750 which is normally out of my reach when one comes up.
About a month back one came up on e bay that had been dropped and had a big dent on one corner. The rca terminals had been replaced but the seller said it was in working order. I kept changing my mind about it and in the end was outbid by a tenner. It went for £400 and i regret it big time.

Mine was a beautifully fettled and revalved Audio Research Classic 60 which I bought for £1K in 2008. (see on top right of pic of kit ready for move). I decided to swap as part of px deal because of my moving and downsizing. One of the best power amps I have ever owned and made my then Quad 57's sing. :(

Should have kept it, didn't, and got ripped off in the px. My ears regretted it until the Croft made my ears feel better.

DarrenW Accuphase 101 tuner which Ali bought and then HIFI Dave bought :doh::(

When Darren mentioned his tuner for sale well over a year ago I was not quite as into tuners as I am now + I thought that the Leak Trough-line ruled the waves and an Accuphase would be poor in comparison.

I now know that I was wrong in my thinking and I have paid the price :(

Two other things I regret not buying (the not doing of which haunts me still) are not HiFi items.....

Malory's Mort de Arthur a wood block cut print illustrated book that I saw in a bookshop in London. It was huge, very cheap and I could not have got it home on the plane :(

An Oil lamp I saw in Ian Marr's Antique shop in Beauly Scotland many years ago :doh::doh::doh::(:(

Just how big was it?

My greatest regret was not taking up the offer, made to me by the father of a school chum of mine, to buy his Leak Stereo 20 pre- and power amplifier (brown coloured livery) from him for about £25. At the time, late '69, I was an impecunious student and just didn't have that sort of money. Perhaps I should have asked my father for a sub?

I regretted not buying the Copper amp first time round when I had the chance. Fortunately a second one came up which is good when you consider that only four were ever made. :)

One thing I regretted for years though was not buying a Densen B400XS CD player back in 2001. I should have gone with my instincts and not with the advice of my friendly Naim dealer who had already sold me my Densen pre/power amps but decided to stop selling Densen.

I bought a Naim CDX instead which I had for quite a while. However a few weeks later I heard the identically-priced Densen player and it pissed all over the Naim - with or without its similarly-priced XPS power supply.

When I closed my last shop in 2005, I disposed of all manner of goodies on E-Bay just to clear the shop. I had nowhere to store it all and we were planning to move to Florida. We eventually abandoned this plan but by then I had sold lots of 'vintage' which I now regret.

This included the following pristine gear:

Radford STA15 and STA25 for approx £500 each
Quad Series 1 pre and power plus the PA amp which preceded it. once again, just for a few hundred Quid.
Various 301's in cream and a grey hammerite with Leak arm and cartridge.
A couple of complete Quad tube systems in cabinets.
three TD124 turntables
three sets of Quad ESL57 with no dents and FWO

Plus lots more and not mentioning the heap of GL75, Garrard Lab-80, Zero 100S, Leak Stereo 30's and 70's and on and on which all went into a skip outside the shop.

In my defence I had to get rid of a lot of kit because I was going to live abroad. Also, even just those few years ago, vintage Hi-Fi wasn't fetching the prices it does now but it still upsets me to think of all that wonderful equipment which is now irreplaceable....:(

I've a should've - did - then didn't - then regretted moment. Not very high end, but I wandered into my local (then) Richer Sounds to find a Marantz Integrated - I think it was a PM 80. Bloody great thing that ran Class A. Bought it cheap - it sounded wonderful - then had buyers remorse (it was cheap but I was skint) so took it back, and they very kindly refunded it. Got home and realised just how much better it was than my amp at the time. By the time I got back to the store... you guessed it...
