I saw a pair of these in my local cash converters for £30 yesterday. I don't know anything about them.

Any good?

YES!!!!!!! [Edit these remarks are for the CELESTE III/IV and CONCORD III/IV, although the tweeter in the Chorale III and Coda III look fairly similar from memory]

Remove the black plastic base and carefully roll the body-stocking up to expose the drivers. Check and carefully tighten the bass driver and with a #0 cross head screwdriver, CAREFULLY tighten the small tweeter screws (1/8 turn maximum should do it). This removes a slight sting in the treble. Roll the cloth cover back and replace the bottom - I think the crossovers are in the bottom as I remember and the caps could be usefully replaced..

Placed on suitable stands (50 - 60cm), these speakers should still be a great buy, although spares may be non existent if they're damaged...

The [edit] CELESTE IV had colour options and the Concord III/IV were as good, but with an extra bass unit IIRC.

Later popular KEF's were perhaps a little more neutral, but they went a bit bland from then on (Coda 2 and 3 etc).

These ones had removable grilles Dave. Does that mean they're not any good?

More like these ones:

I'm a pr@t..

The Chorale III got a best buy in 'Choice, though preferred for classical music. On rock/pop it sounded a bit bass shy and went to pieces when pushed hard, as it's a small box.

£30's ok though for an extension speaker. I'll do more research on the bloody things I was talking about above and edit accordingly.....

No worries Dave.

I just popped into the shop and came out with a pair of Atacama 24" sand filled stands for £11! Bargain or what?

Decided against the speakers. I noticed a pair of Sennheiser HD465's for £35 too. Need to look them up, but seems like a good price to me.

Edit: Hmmm, maybe not. They've sold on ebay for under £30. Stick with my SR80's I think.

That sounds reasonable if they're in good nick. If Cash Converters are selling them for £30, they probably only gave the seller £5!

My RSPCA charity shop were selling a pair of B&W DM5 speakers, sans grills for £5 a month ago. Did I miss a bargain?

They're in ok nick considering their age, but I'm happy with the stands I got today.
