Hi Steve

I used to work in chilled baked savoury products and this thing can happen when automated fillers either run empty or block up. Walls I am, sure will be pleased to reimburse you for taking the trouble to point out this fault. If you still have the wrapper check for the 'Use By' date and any other coded markings. Better still send the wrapper intact to Walls and they will be able to trace the fault to date/batch/time. I am suprised the automated in-line checkweighers did not remove the slice (if it was underweight). Be interested in their response!!!!

I'll repeat a story that a work mate told me... It should stop you worrying about the amount of air in that thing!

Years ago he friend worked for a well known pasty/sausage roll maker that begins with the letter "G"... Allegedly. ;)

One of his duties was to take a sort of pressure washer type device and blast the ears and noses of Pigs heads, this was to clean away the wax/snot/parasites in preparation for said heads to be processed into sausage rolls. Or some similar 'delicacy'.

Anyway, he went on holiday for a couple of weeks, and on his return couldn't find some of his equipment so enquired "who's been doing my job while I was away?".......

He was given the reply: "No-body, why?" :lol:

Thats all bollocks. I've worked in this industry for nearly 30 years and yes some of the bottom end of the market got away with head meat etc in the past. Not any more!! Do you honestly think that with todays 'investigative journos' and whistleblowers they would get away with it now? Thats without supermarket audits and the Food Standards Agency!! I am afraid you dont know what your talking about!!

It's very difficult when you're 'on the road' so to speak as it's pretty much a case of eat shite or starve but after hearing the Chairman of a national chain of butty/pie/coffee shops bemoaning the rising price of 'globally sourced protein' on the R4 Today Programme a few years ago, I have done my best to avoid all such products at all costs.

Think about it, 'globally sourced protein'..... maybe the empty pasty was a blessing in disguise.

You are right gents! I am sorry if get defensive, it is because I have seen too many people loose their jobs because some of the crap that surrounds our food industry!
We have the TIGHTEST controlled food manufacturing industry in the world!! Don't let anyone tell you different. What you eat is your personal choice. 'Global Protein' (whatever that means) only supplies a global demand. It covers ANYTHING from soya beans to poultry, fishmeal to tuna. It is how it is grown and handled that is key. You want the very best - we will have to pay for it. We cannot have it both ways. UK sourced food is THE BEST - But it will never be the cheapest!!!

No offence was intended, I did start my first post with: "I'll repeat a story" and I included the word "allegedly"! ;)

I'll hold my hands up now and admit that I was just repeating what was told to me. I will also admit that I did find it funny. :)

As much as I deride the culture of 'fast food' I recognise that there is a need for it, but I'm afraid that I am MUCH more into the culture of 'slow food'!... Yum Yum! :eek:

You cant beat the food that YOU grow, YOU, Prepare and YOU eat. I am a great believer in LOCAL growers, LOCAL shops. Though processed food sort of pays my way!! ;)
