Hi to all,
I am planning to put my first pre-power combination, I am considering either a quad artera or I am more leaning to a cyrus combination. My budget will be around £3,000 to £4,000.
My room is a living room/kitchen the dimensions are: 5.389m X 3.852m and 2.685m in hieght. The floor is 5mm underlaid carpet. I wanted some advice on what speakers would be best for each hi-fi company.
I listen to a lot of music genres, but I listen more to heavy metal and goth.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Yes, but be selective.

It occurs to me that something from Klipsch could fit the bill too.

Hi guys,
I have bought my first hi-fi kit from ebay: Cyrus PSXR Power Supply, Cyrus dad 3 Cd Player, Cyrus aca7 pre-amplifier, and a Cyrus fm7 Tuner for £850. I will get the monoblocks later..
I have had a look at the Kerr website, the cheapest pair are the Kerr K330's and they are £5,000! so they are out of my price range for the time being... Klipsh are a similar price, so it looks like it will be either Tannoy or JBL for the time being.. Will the Tannoy's and JBL's work with my atacama speaker stands?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Anything in the b&w 600 s2 anniversary range is good , proac dt8 worth a try and the spendor a7 and kudos x2 in wood veneer at 799 pounds. Lots of choice

Is there an interest in Kerr speakers? It's a brand I don't know, although I do recognise the drive units. The designs look like PMC clones with a similar choice of OEM drivers and equally pricey too it seems. PMC currently have the transmission line market largely sewn up, so Kerr will have their work cut out to make headway.

I would buy used well regarded speakers - move them on if they don’t suit
I have had Cyrus amps in the past - really enjoyed them with Kudos C2
These would be worth a try http://https://pinkfishmedia.net/forum/threads/neat-ultimatum-mf5.249615/

Or even these - you never know till you try them in your room :)

The larger Tannoy's don't need stands, with JBL it depends on the model, these are very good and in your budget just about, but ideally need low stands https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JBL-L100-Classic-Speakers-Pair-Black-Grilles-Standmount-Retro-3-Way-Large/233692910632?_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item36692ed428:g:zqUAAOSwA6hefMxT&amdata=enc%3AAQAFAAACcBaobrjLl8XobRIiIML1V4Imu%252 Fn%252BzU5L90Z278x5ickkai8xCwosGKpC0NWj85e%252FByZ ZyCxlznyWwt8InpLsoGgfQAbkW5ZSTAaol3ddGfcq2pZQ5N2LC kFt1bOxYquPZp%252Fq9jZzOw45CaiB%252B6sg1Rj%252B3aD wwKSt60i2HHWgMpmiBZNtqU7bt%252BLClU26Zv9EKTT%252B6 cogI17aRt4p35WZrK1NzLgHjYMUu2UTr6%252FvRKlKxQ3P6Q2 SpYo3yAr55V3TTlwt19gcKi50i%252B0d%252BwrOcn8iK5Osr d3%252Fuj2p7BKLo1hrzvAqIyrPdnhdf6YXXxRDSRYKhY%252F fLSm8D0PPMYiiKzwdYWeXezelXWGQgD4G9TT%252BYvMotmPWb ZpPWargBFfDMb%252FRzbFIqpNcoBin6FVir9bvyXQSz20Me%2 52B8gH63Way2mtTHW%252Bx5kS7ISDGbJiEVICh7cqwA8fBaOU kLENqRMiiNkAZr6eDCDbgYaVc2KZ4ed%252F2dsqCk90HL7XZG xqcvXaT%252B8URyl9bMdoW0D5GVIKCEmwICO67a%252BHV8ju BPyW1F5SFsKNlB2yXKYU%252BveB8GtotV1nClmzCmpHyfNOTc gbUZxxwEKF3s4EJ6Bn%252FdTOylfKtyibA%252BfwPie1hfLz 2I5wmId5AqH8lO%252B9khm0AnmfvNC31Z2D7v%252BkVrao6u DNjZT3eyIxSfN5U%252BgVG4KCKUpWotl86DwzD8FMfwJI4Xb3 UOwhWZyttVhKqMqlbfzEUljKygXDri0m2VWXXncOTX%252F14Q o4mPTlNtzSDL4TE1nsc2YjQsR93G6H7b1p1mhY8OpB1cGRqbPg jfHuEVFHyu9HA%253D%253D%7Ccksum%3A233692910632e166 7000ca1c43e89e43f00aee96e44c%7Campid%3APL_CLK%7Ccl p%3A2334524

yes Kerr appeared at the birmingham hi fi show 2 years ago, they went down a storm and the standmounts were absolutely superb . now just noticed that steve lives in a flat so not sure if that limits speakers ?

you asked about atacama stands and tannoy , well there are a lot of tannoys !!! certainly my tannoys would not fit on them

I think I saw these at Cranage 2 or 3 years ago, maybe Ammonite room, couldn't hear them, but they looked the business and the bass units looked like the ones PMC use in their big studio jobs so should be good for blowing out your windows :)

Hi guys,
I do live in a studio flat, living room/kitchen with one bedroom with en-suite bathroom. My atacama speaker stands are 500mm in height, they are 1.3m away from the side walls and standing 300mm away from the chimney breast on either side of my Plasma TV. I'm not sure if I will be able to afford the JBL's just yet, the £3,00 to £4,00 budget is for the whole system roughley, but I will keep my eyes peeled.

Regards,
Steve

You sound a bit like me - when i visit a customer's house my first thought is "where would my stereo go?" :D

Watching the various property shows it's amazing how many of the houses they feature that don't appear to have a stereo at all. And if they do it's very rarely anything 'serious'.

Even though you can see from looking at the house and how it is furnished and decorated that they can't be short of a few bob. What's that all about?

Yes. no books, no magazines, no records, no CDs, and in some cases not even any pictures on the walls, just room after room of bland Ikea-lite. You can only imagine how dull the owners must be.

Busy professionals, their time is too important to be dossing around playing tunes. If they want music they go out to the opera.

This always surprises me. But maybe because I'm used to houses and apartments where books are literally everywhere.

We are in an age of extreme rate of change, accelerated by IT. It is imperative IMO to try to keep a handle and grip on what is going on, even if only for self preservation in a predatory capitalist paradigm.

Although locally there are examples of people whose homes are filled with objects d'art, clutter free seems to be the new fashion, possibly due to time deficit, a high paced lifestyle to earn more. But I ask, precisely what is that money for? To me it is a tool not a 'God'. I seek high quality life experience, and those with much money may also say the same, and I see little point in having a very fast luxurious car when I am limited to the conditions of the M25, with numerous cameras around. Why is there so much alcoholism in the apparently well off if their wealth gives them happiness?

Most are not interested in real Hi-Fi, largely IMO because the music so often says so little compared with the 60s-70s revolution, when at that time 'everyone' wanted a decent system. Do we really want a good one to listen to Kylie's "I Should be so Lucky"? Two little bricks either side of a plastic 9" cube of amp CD and tuner abound, and the quality of radio, is testament to the decline of audio and rise of visual media.

My theory is that people feel their lives are too complex and want to simplify them, but they can't because the things that complicate their lives are out of their control. But they can control what they have in their house so the 'de-cluttering' is essentially a displacement activity.

Some folk are OCS(obsessive compulsive spartanism)... ive a mate who just keeps getting shot of stuff. He has a shed the size of a house and its nearly empty as he wont keep anything:D Still it leads to a tidy house etc, and i wish i was a bit more like him

That is a very good supposition, and on a substantive basis; yes I can see some sitting in their living room imbibing in the simplistic bare look, trying to get mental peace.

My philosophy for some 20 years is that all I have must be used in my life, all that is superfluous eliminated, so that; maintenance of it is minimised, value loss is minimised and the maximum recuperated and used for relevant things, and someone else has the use of it rather than it wasting away.

There is of course the current financial problem in which some are really suffering, and hence possibly selling things.

Likewise, large room and a concrete floor were non-negotiable. Was looking for 2 years before I found one that fitted the bill and that I could afford. Although I couldn't really afford it, was bread and water for a while.
