Break the seal

I have a re-issued copy of 'Brain Salad Surgery' by ELP on vinyl that still has its wrapping and seal intact after ten years of sitting in my vinyl collection. Is the time right to break the seal and listen for the first time in many years...???

I guess it's all turning a bit OCD as I would just love to spin it and listen once again to 'Welcome back my friends...' but it means breaking the seal on a ten year old album. It's like Tutankhamun all over again. Might it be cursed...???:eek:

I'm not sure, it was so long ago. I bought it from a place in Brighton in 2000 whilst on a break away from home. I bought a shedload of vinyl at the same time (I had money in those days) !

Its on sale on Amazon for forty five quid brand new. I must have paid around twelve quid. Its gotta be worth it just for that sleeve...!

I guess I could just keep it for posterity and buy the SACD re-issue but I always thought this album sounded dreadful on CD. I have an early CD copy and it is awful.

It's always sounded awful on vinyl:lol:
My copy is on Manticore from '74, and to me it sounds as though they didn't use standard RIAA equalisation. Of course I didn't know about RIAA equalisation at the time, but there are areas where the high notes on the keyboards rip your ears off with fierce brightness.

It's either that or someone's ears were f**ked from too many years playing at very high volumes.
Or the monitors in the studio had blown HF units.

Then you get a track like "Still.....You Turn Me On", and it's all loveliness and a tonally well balanced production.

Despite it's faults it is still a great album:)

Yeah but don't you just find that with a load of late sixties/early seventies stuff. The production was truly bloody awful. Some of the Crosby, Still and Nash stuff was similar. It's just so dated by todays standards. Have we really been that spoilt...? Apart from the fact that everything is so goddamn loud these days the production is usually superb. It seems, the better the band, the better the production. Could that relate to the better the band, the more money is thrown at them by the record company...? I wonder...

I've picked up 2 sealed factory issue reel to reels lately and had to open both to hear what they sounded like :) I had both of them on vinyl / CD already, but curiosity got the best of me. Just go for it!

I think it is a bit like when Chris Evans blew all that money recently on a super rare Ferrari - and then - shock horror - he's only gone and driven it! Can you believe it, he's got that super rare car, and he's actually using it to drive to places! ;)

Brain Salad Surgery used tinny sounding mics in the recording, but Barry Diament rolled the toppiness off in the original CD mastering. My "Victory Records" CD from 1996 sounded significantly better IMO.

I went through several vinyl copies when this record was released because they were so noisy.

The Manticore LP of Trilogy was terrible as well, all hissy and dull. I wonder if Atlantic still had the proper masters and wouldn't release them?

I remember in the adverts for mail order LPs in the NME in the early '70s, 'Brain Salad Surgery' was always printed as 'Brian Salad Surgery' and 'Electric Ladyland' was 'Electric Landlady'.

By coincidence, I've just brought Sparkle in the Rain by Simple Minds down for a play, and found it to be sealed in cellophane... :scratch: I have absolutely no memory of re-acquiring it, but then there are lots of records that I can't recall where/how I got them. Anyway, I certainly played this album to death, so guess I found a new copy at some point from somewhere. It has an "A&M Value Priced" sticker, but no actual price (unlike the Carpenters one I found in the Salvation Army shop for 50p and mercilessly butchered - Nice Price, £3.99).

Despite my earlier post about a Ferrari being for driving, I'm going to be a hypocrite - I'm not opening this one! I'll play it on CD instead...
