Hi Guys. I seem to have blown up the midrange drivers on my Impulse H1 horns and I feel devastated! I can’t seem to source any replacements on the web. The original drivers were Seas 11 F-M and the subsequent Seas MCA 11 FC a straight replacement. Nothing in the existing Seas Catalogue is a suitable replacement. Anybody have any spare drivers that I could buy or know where I might source some?
Merry Christmas.

I have removed the midrange drivers so the speakers are running as two way. Whilst they obviously don’t sound outstanding as they normally do, they still sound better than some hifi setups that I have heard at shows more recently. I am not sure whether that is a reflection upon the quality of current day high end set ups or just how good the H1’s are.

So I eventually ended up getting these.
https://www.monacor.com/products/components/speaker-technology/hi-fi-midrange-speakers-/msh-115/
A very good technical match to the originals and reasonably priced at around £35 each.
Subjectively I hear no difference between these and the originals.

I believe Falcon Acoustics also recommend these Monacors as a suitable replacement for Elac midrange drivers on some IMF speakers.

Hi - I've just spotted your update on using the Monacor mids. I'm in a similar position - my original SEAS units are rotten - do I get them rebuilt or buy new Monacors! Are you still happy with the H2s with Monacors fitted?

Many thanks for any comments,

Rob

did you see paul coupes recent post on FB

For all you Impulse fans out there, I've had numerous calls about restoring H1 and H2 Impulse speakers. Please note that I'm down to my very last spare midrange unit for these, so have no spare pairs now available. It may well be more cost effective given what's involved in retro fitting newer appropriate seas units to these to look for a new replacement pair of speakers as essentially any further changes and upgrading is the same as a new speaker R&D and there will be little change out of £2,000 to fully refurb and refit new driver units for mids/tweeters as it involves a new crossover development. That cost includes all cab restoration, new crossovers etc and is still less than current owners would pay for a new set of speakers to similar specifications. I mention this as I've had a lot of unrealistic expectations on budget for such work which is time consuming and requires considerable skill to do properly.

If the cones are free of sand just replace the surrounds, easier to do than the woofers

The mid range horn structure contains sand, which can leak, especially if the front bar is used to lift handle the speaker's. The sand then gets embedded into the cones. Visual inspection should show if there is a problem

I never knew that! I've heard of sand put in a separate enclosure to mass load speakers but what does it do in a horn?

damping resonances I would think.

Not sure, but I seem to recall that the mid horn flare was made of a plaster composite. It's possible sand was part of the mix.

Ah right got it I thought the sand was poured into the horn to tune/dampen it or something!

The mid horn flare looks to be, in effect, a shaped plastic box so i guess it dampens resonance

yes i thought it was a typo !!
