Hi to all,
I am nightcast2000 living in Birmingham Uk. My current system is a old Sony MHC-MX1 all in one system that has matching speakers standing on Atacama speaker stands. I am currently looking for my first pre/2x monoblock amplifiers with a matching CD transport.
Having read some reviews, I would prefer either a Cyrus or a Musical Fidelity system. The new system will be second hand, as I can't afford new. To be honest, I would love to get a Cyrus aca7.5 with Cyrus apa monoblocks with the right speakers for them.. The living room/ kitchen for my flat is 5.389m X 3.852m and 2.685m in hieght.
The floor has a 5mm underlaid carpet.

I do like to listen to all sorts of music, but mainly specialising in Heavy metal and goth.

Yes, definitely. If there are others members on here near you go and listen to their systems (if they will let you :)) It will give you a far better and honest view of whether anything you fancy is really for you. IMO the worst place to listen to kit is in a dealers dem room. I know that you are not looking to buy new anyway.

I had thought about going to the next hi-fi show when the current situation allows. I have been to one before many years ago.. I appreciate that reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt, but I don't have much else to go on, apart from my own ears of course.

Well if you like your rock loud, have a listen to the beefier Quad current dumping power amps. 606II, 909, QSP and Artera if you can. Bags of relaxed power! And they work well with cheap passive pre-amps.

I went to loads of them in late 80s - early 90s at Heathrow. The only one that stands out was a dem of some more reasonably priced kit using a pair of large Kef floorstanding speakers (the ones with the two opposed bass drivers in the centre of the cabinet joined by what they called a piston) It was an enormous room and the speakers were in the middle. Playing some tracks from Donald Fagen's Nightfly album. Magical, it really was as if he was there.

At the end of the day it is all about synergy and that one really had it. Other stuff was not so memorable, or more memorable for it's awfulness and ridiculous price tag. If you can come home put your (one's) collection of old tat on and think....well this is good enough for me.....then Job Done:D

I do like to play rock fairly loud, but not too loud to annoy my neighbours, I am more into detail, I've had a look on ebay for some quad kit the Artera pre/power combination certainly looks good, but I'm undecided. If I do go down the cyrus or quad route, what bi-wirable speakers would be best for them given the size of my room? I'm not too much in a rush to buy anything yet, just quietly saving up.

Speakers are a very personal choice. You need to decide if you want floorstanders, standmounts, bookshelf types and how much room they'll have. Have a budget in mind too.

I'd suggest starting a thread in the Blank Canvas section asking for opinions and outlining your thoughts, I'm sure you'll get some suggestions.

Agree with the amplifier suggestions. Quad amps work well with most musical genres.

great to have you , spent many years and thousands of posts on cyrusunoficial [ now sadly demised ] had some cyrus monoblocks here the other day as a friend wanted to try them with my pre amps . not bad at all . good to have a fellow brummie here
