But the price of a replacement stylus is kicking my fat ole arse! Well, ole anyway.

A friend gave me an Audio Technica Signet TK5E. The stylus looks like ass, but the cartridge looks new. I checked the usual suspects for a replacement stylus and only found so far on http://www.adelcom.net/SignetStylus1.htm a couple options for $150 to $275ish.

Well, my first thoughts are #&@& em, but then, I wonder if this may be a pretty nice piece of late 70s-early80s equipment.

Any opinions on this guy?

I must contemplate the issue over another
Thanks

P.S. It was his fathers. His father used an old Linn Sondek and 2 Hafflers as monoblocks. Not yer ordinary RCA Victrola kinda dad.

Can't seem to find much about them!

There's this: http://www.conusaudio.com/TK5E.htm

And this: http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=vinyl&m=767599

They don't seem to have had much of a presence here in the UK though.

Seem to remember getting very excited about them in 1977 (my last year in retailing), but I can't remember what they sounded like. Looks cool though!

Thank you for that!

I read the specs from your first link (dunno why I kept bringing up a blank) and it looks like a pretty nice piece of gear, but 42 mv?!?!? That seems rather high to me.

Anyway, thanks again for the research.

FWIW!
I bought a new stylus for this cart and it kicks ass in the mids and lows depts. Of course, at my age, it may kick ass in the highs too and I just can't hear it. I would say it compares to the Shure V15 Type lll.
