Moving on (and down) from a 401 and Sondek- ideas wanted.

I've just sold my Garrard 401 and will soon try to sell my old LP12/PU3 (plus other kit) I am looking for recommendations on where to go next based on the following criteria:

1. Having lost full time employment a while ago, I can no longer sit with expensive kit when we need cars/house/domestic stuff repaired or replaced. So I need to downside/downgrade and realise some cash.

2. I no longer have time to listen to vinyl as much as I used to, but still want the option, plus my daughter has her own records now.

3. Looking to spend around £350ish on a decent second hand deck with arm. I will likely keep my Goldring 1022GX. Since I am planning to sell my Naim amps and use my second system Primare integrated amp I will need a phono amp as it doesn't have an input.

Thanks Don, Having "done" the idler thing with the 401 I think I'm heading more in the direct drive Japanese route, but appreciate the idea, did fancy one once...

Now, Geoff, that's interesting. I've travelled the "old idler" and the classic British (Scottish) "elastic band" routes, and fancy a Japanese DD. Pity the Techies are so expensive... The Toshibas don't seem to be that numerous, sadly. The idea of not having to fettle too often also appeals...

The Toshibas don't seem to be that numerous, sadly.

The SR-370 has been popular on the forum. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody here has one they'd sell. It's a pretty hefty unit and weighs half as much again as a Techie.

Still haven't plinthed my 401! Taking my time over hifi now, don't move stuff on so quickly. I have a 1200 gr which functionally anyway I love, it sounds pretty good too. You will get a 1200/10 with arm for 350, but it might not be in the best cosmetic condition.

I am a starving orchestral musician :cool: , so I have to acquire gear on the cheap.

I have been VERY happy with a Mission 775S and Grace G-707 arm. Both still available for bargain prices (I paid Canadian $ equivalent to 100 quid for the table and arm each).

Good luck finding a nice vinyl player!

If you can push to £449 then the Project Debut Carbon EVO is a very hard to beat new TT and comes with Ortofon 2M Red, HiFi News have just reviewed it and their closing statement is "While the Project Debut EVO is entry to mid level its performance through a system 200x its price revealed it to be punching w-a-a-y above its weight,...... recommended unreservedly"

Yes more money but new with warranty and new cartridge you'd have pieces mind, should last you at least 5 years or until you decide to move back on up.

Good suggestion, and I did consider the Carbon EVO, but I can't push my budget and I still have a hankering after a direct drive. Plus I resent paying the tax man £75 vat on money I've already paid 20% income tax :eek:

Sell that primare, probably makes the lights dim when you turn it on and adding to your leccy bill. Get a Sony receiver, have a decent mm phonostage built in and a jvc direct drive tt for next to nothing. You’ll be surprised how good it would all sound and it won’t cost much and get your money back when things pick up.

Not sure if it's within your budget or not, but this has an excellent tonearm (Luxman TA-1) designed by Micro Seiki. The TT itself was made by Fujiya Audio which produced a lot of turntables for the likes of Micro Seiki, Denon and Yamaha.
