On behalf of my brother I am on the lookout for a Sugden a21a.

He actually owns one but it has started making weird noises on one channel during warmup so he's looking for a replacement.

The apparent solution would be to repair it but it has been looked at by a service company without success and sending it to Sugden UK for repair would cost more than a replacement (we live in Finland). If anyone knows these amps in and out and knows this particular problem I am very grateful for any info. :)

Anyway, this is still a wanted topic, not a repair thread. Anyone got an a21a that does not get used? :)

There is one for sale on pink fish media. 600 quid including phono board. Feckin steal. I was tempted myself and I already own one.

Its a pretty straightforward circuit that has been around for 50 years so I suspect the fix to the Sugden will be fairly straightforward. It would really be worth finding a reputable repairer who specialises in vintage kit.
Unfortunately given your location I cant make any recommendations. But if you join a Finnish hifi forum you should get some suggestions.

Personally I'd send it Sugden who are exceptionally reasonable for repairs there's no way they'll charge more than the value of the amp, postage might be expensive from and to Finland though but a Sugden amp repaired by Sudden will add value anyway IMO.

I'm pretty sure he contacted Sugden UK at some point and decided the repair with shipping would be too expensive but let's see.

The amp would need to be a total write off for it not to be sent to Sugden.

At approximately £600 for an amp SH that would really have to be a very expensive repair.

I sent an A21aP to Sugden back in 2012 for an intermittent loss of sound in the left channel and with postage costs back and forth from Glasgow to Yorkshire the cost was £112.80.

Sugden told me on the phone what the issue was (dodgy relay) and the cost of the repair when I contacted them.

No Problem Karl, my amp was manufactured in 2001. I also had an A21Al circa 2003 and sold that around 2011 for £400 plus insured postage however the buyer asked me to send the amp to Sugden for a service and the installation of a phono stage which cost him, from memory about £150, think the phono stage was around £90 back then.

The A21a on PFM looks really nice btw, the seller has posted photos now, good price too IMO.

Had a chat with my brother. He’s leaning towards sending it to Sugden for repair after all. He seems very attached to the amp:).

Will tell what the decision was once he has made up his mind. Thanks for everyone’s input. Highly appreciated!
