Garrard 401
I’ve been persuaded to move on my 401 by my wife and daughter… I don’t use it much and think it might be better off with someone who’ll get more use and enjoyment from it. I’ll then get a turntable my wife and daughter can use more easily…*
The bearing has no lateral play and I’ve used sewing machine oil or 0 weight fully synthetic oil in it.
You’ll likely want to replace the thrust bearing, the idler wheel and bushes, the grommets etc. and clean up the mechanicals/under the platter. It plays fine for me, holds speed once warmed up. The motor pulls like a train. The body is clean, and free from corrosion. There are a few marks as can be seen in the photos. No mat or centre disc. Happy to provide more photos. Not immaculate but not bad for an old girl.
I did go and see Martin Bastin a few years ago to discuss him refurbing it (he’s local to me) but never got around to it. He’d be my recommendation if he’s still doing it. Lovely chap.
£600. *Might consider a “less intimidating” turntable plus cash depending on what you have.
Apologies if the photos aren't correctly uploaded/posted- it's my first attempt. Lots more photos.
