Garrard 401
I’ve been persuaded to move on my 401 by my wife and daughter… I don’t use it much and think it might be better off with someone who’ll get more use and enjoyment from it. I’ll then get a turntable my wife and daughter can use more easily…*
The bearing has no lateral play and I’ve used sewing machine oil or 0 weight fully synthetic oil in it.
You’ll likely want to replace the thrust bearing, the idler wheel and bushes, the grommets etc. and clean up the mechanicals/under the platter. It plays fine for me, holds speed once warmed up. The motor pulls like a train. The body is clean, and free from corrosion. There are a few marks as can be seen in the photos. No mat or centre disc. Happy to provide more photos. Not immaculate but not bad for an old girl.
I did go and see Martin Bastin a few years ago to discuss him refurbing it (he’s local to me) but never got around to it. He’d be my recommendation if he’s still doing it. Lovely chap.
£600. *Might consider a “less intimidating” turntable plus cash depending on what you have.

Apologies if the photos aren't correctly uploaded/posted- it's my first attempt. Lots more photos.

Nice 401, shame you have to sell it.

I taught my daughter to use a 401 when she was young, so she is one of the few people i trust with it ;)

Martin is still kicking around.

Glad to hear that. I've got his number, I ought to call him.

Good looking 401!

I didn't realise Martin Bastin lives in Powys, my brother lives in the Welshpool area which is also where my 401 is awaiting it's final assembly. Would you mind sending me his contact details, I'd like him to at least take a look at the bearing if not the whole shebang.

His house is virtually inaccessible. He drove down this hill in little panda 4x4 to pick me and my mate up. It never came out of 1st gear travelling up-to his house. Nice bloke, and a bit of a legend in Garrard circles, visiting his workplace was magical, it's a place where probably hundreds of Garrard's have been fixed, restored etc. I sent my idler wheel and housing for repair early this year and it came back fixed and now silent.

Hi Darren. Martin lives in South Shropshire. I live just a few miles over on the Welsh side, that cross border thing where you forget where you live/work/shop/go to school etc.
I'll dig out his number and PM you. He's not far from Ludlow I seem to remember. I have also done that rough track in first gear...
