View Full Version : Pathos "In the Groove" MKII Phono Stage.

Firstly, is there a member on the forum that owns one?

Secondly, I had a senior moment when I went to install new Lead Acid batteries and forgot the connection lead positions.

Does any know how these batteries are connected?

Emailed Pathos but no answer and dealers are obviously not open due to lockdown.

Not going to connect the batteries until I 100% know it's correct, for fear of damage.

Any help much appreciated.

Easy to work out. The two grey wires are the 'common' of the two batteries.

Taking the terminals as shown in the photo, Top Left, Top Right, Bottom Left, Bottom Right.

Grey wire to top left.
Grey wire with red mark to bottom left.
Black wire to bottom right.
Red wire to top right.

Thanks firebottle. Are these the voltages you would expect? (Not connected to mains)

Red / Black = 12.96v
Grey / grey red = 00.00v

Voltage from each individual battery

6.40v
6,53v

When connected to mains voltage..

Voltage whilst charging = 13.20v (slowly climbing) 13.38v / 13.56v( reading taken from red: black connection. ( No voltage on Grey / Grey Red terminals.)
Sorry, I've turned the batteries within the cradle but connected as per your instructions.

My impression is that what you have done Peter is right, it looks as though the two cells are in series, the grey wires being connected together.

I exchanged this kit (and quite a load of money) from a Mcintosh / Whest combination.

Many would disagree but I personally consider this battery phono to be the best I've heard to date. Perhaps it just matches the Pathos InPower / Incontroll kit.

I will photograph everything in the future before messing with it.... I feel a complete numpty.

All appears to working as it should.[emoji736]

Just waiting for a response from Fire bottle before it goes back on the rack[emoji33]

Many thanks for your advice and help, it really is appreciated.

One final question. When the unit is is charge mode, there appears be a low level hum / vibration from the transformer after the charger has been on for an hour or so.

There is absolute silence when the unit is first switched on.

This can be stopped by just pressing on top of the casing and appears to be a mechanical vibration. Never noticed it before.

Is this something to worry about? Or is something about to fail.

Obviously, I can get it into a dealer after lockdown is over.

It’s very easy indeed. Just remove the screws holding the rubber feet and slid the top case off.

Note: make sure you reconnect the new batteries in the correct sequence.

Well, this turned into a project! All but one of the screws holding the four feet came out. The last one is frozen or cross threaded and the head is stripped out. Not sure if i can get a vice grips on it or not...

Can you carefully saw a slot in it with a junior hacksaw?

I'm also trying to grasp the concept of how the short screws that hold the feet on also hold the top in place? They seem too short to affect the top? What am I missing here?

Sounds like a fart on all this. I think this is a Phono stage i will give a miss to.
