Just a quick one chaps, a mate of mine is looking for a portable digital audio player and was considering the Fiio M3 Pro, which gets great reviews, but wanted to know if it allows streaming directly from his Spotify account, or does it just play sources from its USB input?

If it doesn't allow him to stream music from Spotify, then could someone please recommend a similarly priced player that facilitates such? It would be preferable, but not mandatory, if any recommendations were from personal experience, i.e. that you own and have used the device concerned, but all info and advice would be appreciated!

Any computer running Linux Mint will attain for free from the operating systems Software manager a Spotify music player see image.
All that is needed is a laptop or tablet running Linux Mint https://www.linuxmint.com

I used to have a Fiio X3 that I thought was decent until I tried a Motorola X Play smartphone which trounced the Fiio for sound quality.

Might be an idea to look at some of the Sony smartphones or any that have been designed with gaming as a priority as they tend to have decent audio chips.

On the subject of phones, I use a LG V20, it has fantastic DAC and headphone amp. Plays Spotify really well plus I have a 256gb ssd in it filled with music. Bonus is it is a really good phone as well. V30 is another.

Thanks, Chris, but preferably it's got to be something that works independently of a computer. i.e. you power it up, plug headphones in, connect to Spotify via the available wi-fi network, and hear music. No more effort than that:)

Doesn't want to use his phone, mate, as the SQ isn't good enough. He wants a dedicated music player:)

Thanks Mike, but see above. Any reccos must be, NOT for phones (as he's happy with the one he's got, just as a phone/camera), but dedicated music players that can access his Spotify account:)

Thanks, Malcolm, I'll look into that, then:thumbsup:

Any other reccos, guys. for dedicated portable music players ONLY [NO PHONES], which can play Spotify, would be greatly appreciated. £100-150, max. Ta!

Absolutely, but he doesn't have a lot of dosh, so doesn't want to have to fork out for a new phone (his current one is nearly new), just to hear his music better, as he's already using his phone to play music.

He wants a dedicated player that will improve the sound he's currently getting from his phone, and which will allow him to access his Spotify account:)

Maybe just a portable dac/amp for his phone?

Marco

Another function that would be desired is NFC Bluetooth Pairing, as his intention would be to use the device with wireless Bluetooth headphones:)

I'm presuming then it does, or not?:)

Note:- Although this may be obvious to some, the user will need a Wifi service to connect to be able to stream from Spotify, TIDAL etc using the M6. So out and about usage may be limited, unlike a Mobile phone that can use 4G or 5G if enabled.

alternatively the higher spec M9 is very nice spec, but is a little over budget. https://www.amazon.co.uk/FiiO-M6-MP3-Player-Black/dp/B07L8P8QDY/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=fiio+m6&qid=1605105567&sr=8-3

From this page https://www.fiio.com/m9

"Incredibly fast with a deeply customized OS

In the heart of the M9 lies the Android operating system, deeply customized by FiiO. This allows you to navigate through menus at an astonishing speed and with amazing ease due to the carefully thought out customized user interface.

Also, apps for popular streaming services including NetEase Cloud Music, MOOV, Tidal and KKBOX are pre-installed to allow even more ways to listen to music.

*Can install whitelisted third-party music streaming apps

*Whitelisted apps: NetEase Cloud Music, MOOV, Tidal, KKBOX, Spotify, Qobuz, Roon, Deezer, JOOX, ES file manager, Bandcamp, and Sony headphones."

Or you can use a Fiio BTR3 and Bluetooth from the phone. It's a great little DAC and Headphone amp.

I have the Shanling M0 (https://en.shanling.com/product/222). Great little unit for the price, sound and features. Only gripe is it is a bit small and can be fiddly to operate. I think the only ones that directly link to the internet and stream Spotify are the more expensive ones, eg £500+ But as I want a standard player to be able to work with the internet, that is why I use it standalone. If I want to stream I will my phone etc.

Can connect as a USB dac or Bluetooth. Didn't feel like I was missing too much when we were away paired with shuoer tapes, which isn't usually the case.

I've been using a Fiio M3 Pro for the last 3 months and I've been highly impressed with it, for the money I think it's excellent, it isn't a streamer though it's purely a digital music player although it does have the facility to work as DAC although I've never used it as such. Replaying my own digital music library the sound quality is definitely superior to what you would achieve with a smartphone, my M3 Pro certainly has the edge over my iphone 6S for replay quality. It takes any capacity micro SD card, I've got a 200GB card in mine which holds all my digital music files in FLAC and Apple Lossless and it can even handle DSD although from my own tests I didn't notice any difference from 24/96 hi res even though the files are massive, if the streaming facility is paramount you will need to look elsewhere.
