Had a break from model making, what with the house move and some health issues but fancied doing something a bit different and more involved.
I found a scale model kit of the Sherman tank Fury from the film of the same name. It's a really good representation of the tank with loads of extra details from the film. It didn't come with the crew so I bought US tank crew in the same scale. I wanted to make a diorama, not made one before. Really like that, it captures the atmosphere of a tank crew taking a well deserved rest nicely.
I used to paint really small figures and models (6mm rather than 25mm) but was always jealous of people who could do the weathering and realistic wear and tear on larger ones.

Nowhere near in Ian's league but I used a bit of artistic licence with the Dodge Charger from Fast & Furious by taking the engine out to fit in with the 'stang (and yes I know the wheels are still wrong)

Great stuff Roy. Making changes and making the model your own is brilliant. I could have made a mint, out of the box factory finished version of the Sherman but adding the diorama and the heavy weathering bough the scene to life for me and as Lawrence said there is a feeling of a war weary tank crew taking a break. I really need to practice figure painting, it's really hard to get right. I'm about to start something very different using a model I made some time ago, repainting it, weathering and making a diorama for it.

There were plenty of Mustangs available but all the Chargers were different scales (or there were a couple of Franklyn Mint examples at 3-400 quid!). Didn't make a big effort to fill the hole in the bonnet where the blower used to poke out, it's just a bit of corn flake box coloured in with a sharpie :)

Your painting skills are amazing Ian. You really capture the weathered look superbly well.
Thanks Andy. Previously my models were like out of the box factory fresh but the weathering and shading brings things to life. The dioramas are a new thing for me and really stretch the imagination. I also treated myself to a good quality airbrush which makes such a difference.

This is my latest, Opel Manta 400. Another model I made some time ago but now I've added the weathering and created a diorama of a rally stage. I had a few Mantas over the years, ranging from a standard 1.6 with Del Orto twin carbs, a GTE and a B series hatchback with an Opel Monza 3.0 litre straight six which went like stink but had serious electrical problems under the bonnet. I was going to have a new wiring harness made but it blew the head gasket and despite skimming the head it never ran well again and was sold on. I'd like to have another one but any decent ones left are just too much money.

A mate of mine had a bright orange Firenza, it was great fun.

These are great pieces of work Ian, mighty impressed.
I was just thinking the Russian sub reminded me of the one in " voyage to the bottom of the sea ".
It took me back to the one and only diorama I made, which was a small scale Airfix Leander Class Frigate, which I mounted on a small piece of ply and sculptured Polyfilla to resemble the sea (and painted up as best I could). Sort of like yours, but not as well executed.
......... Many years ago my wife (who wasn't at the time) bought me a Tamiya Tiger tank for Christmas and I think it's still boxed in our loft. You've got me thinking now !!
About the same time as getting the Tiger, I saw several models made up to a standard I could only dream of and the paintwork in particular was something else. I asked the guy in the shop if they had been air brushed, but he said the paint had been applied by a technique call 'dry brushing'.
If I get round to assembling it, I will have to try that technique.

Thanks Mark, the dioramas are a new thing for me, thank god for you tube lol. I've just started something rather different and to be honest I'm not really sure how to go about it but that's the thing for me, trial and error. I remember the Sea View from Voyage to the bottom of the sea, I loved that when I was a kid.
Definitely have a go at the Tiger, it's a great model and when it comes to paint just take your time. Dry brushing is a technique to add highlighted edges and any raised areas on a painted surface. It creates shading and makes details stand out in a natural way. I'm relatively new to airbrushing but I'm getting to grips with the basics and I'm finding the effects you can get are amazing. I made the mistake of buying a cheap airbrush and compressor set and honestly it was pretty horrid. I shelled out for a decent airbrush and a compressor with a receiver tank, variable pressure settings and a proper water trap, it made a huge difference to the quality of finish and is actually easier to use. All that being said if you take your time with some decent brushes you can get very high quality finishes too.
Great stuff as usual Ian, you should be very proud of yourself.

........... I remember the Sea View from Voyage to the bottom of the sea, I loved that when I was a kid.
I always fancied trying to get hold of the sound of the 'sonar' from Voyage to the bottom of the sea, to use as a ringtone on my phone.
That sound was quite iconic and sort of enhanced the programme.
..... Similar to the theme tune to 'UFO' a few years later.
