I just gave away a quad of these with a preamp sale.

There's little better ever made I think. If nothing, really.

I forgot to paint the nipples red, though LOL. TBH I think it is meaningless and Tesla never actually did it. Don't let that out you off, though. Great valves.

https://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?31284-Red-Nipples-On-Vacuum-Tubes&p=532571Yeah but the cross swords means military. So the red marker doesn't mean what that chap suggests.

I did post about the cross swords thing and what it means a while ago.

think the colour on top was a tolorance thing for differing applications.. medical, military etc

I know a Tesla expert. I will ask him.

Just had a reply from a 'valve wholesaler' if it clarifies 'nipple' mystery...in addition, there was a scene (useless info but since we are on this tip...(sorry) there was a scene in the series Pennies from heaven whereby a certain lady put red lipstick on 2 of her tips! Can anyone remember this for 10 points?)
I digress...

The Tesla tubes were produced in the Czech Republic in the early 1970's for the Czech military. They were produced and tested and only the highest grade with the best and most consistent*test results were kept: Originally, these tubes were not labelled at all.

About 15 years ago, the Czech army sold their stock, because the equipment that used these tubes was all end of life. At that moment, they branded these tubes with "Tesla", this was just a way to sell these tubes in a commercially more attractive way. The red dot was added to indicate these tubes were hand-picked after testing and are all highest and consistent grade.

The color red was used in the past by several tube*manufacturers to indicate highest grade. For example, in airplanes and other critical equipment where tubes should not break, they always used "red-grade" tubes. In the tube world red indicates highest quality grade.

So there you have it...
