Hi All,
I've always found this site to be one of the most informative and interesting
sites on the net,so having just acquired a pair of Harbeth P3 Xd's along with a Croft integrated (about a month ago)
it seemed like a good community to join.

I've been in this hobby for about 30 years with a fair amount
of experience primarily listening to music via various tube
designed gear.
I counted about 21 different amps(S.E.T/PP/UL/Hybrid)and about a dozen
speakers(Coaxial/Single Driver/2 ways/etc.) over the course of my initial
interest in this hobby.

My current set-up is the aforementioned P3's & Croft in a desktop arrangement

I must say it's very, very good but I do need some advice
on rolling some tubes.

What would the recommended procedure be to start rolling in
tubes i.e. start with the line-stage tube first, see how that sounds then after a period of time
go to the phono section or visa versa?

Thanks,
Joe

A warm welcome Joe, you have some very nice equipment. I'm sure other members with a experience of your particular equipment will be able to help you when it comes to tube rolling, luckily you have some great places in the US like Upscale Audio where you can get some fantastic tubes.

Welcome Joe, lots of experience tubers on here, in fact I believe Marco(site owner extraordinaire) is quite experience in rolling.:D So maybe he can be of assistance with tube advice.

Welcome to AoS Joe.

Yes there are several Croft users here, who I'm sure will be happy to suggest some candidates for tube rolling.

Enjoy the Forum

Hello Joe. Welcome to AOS.

If you want opinions on valve choices, I'd suggest starting a thread in the Blank Canvas section with your questions.

Anyway, join in the chat, the members are friendly.

Enjoy the forum,
Geoff.

Hi Joe, by coincidence my Croft preamp arrived last week and I joined the forum to see what's what also.
Best wishes to you and New York, I had one of the greatest weeks of my life there back in '99.
Had tickets to see Scotty Moore in a bar (!), but the gig cancelled on the night.

Hi Stranraer,
Glad to hear you have fond memories of the city.
What do you think of the Croft?
What speakers are you using?

Hi Stranraer,

Speakers are Neat Ultimatum XLS, and Glenn Croft is my king !
As I don't have vinyl, he's made a special 25RS line only. I'm not techie in the slightest so have no idea what's different but it's a mesmerising listen.
I've done my fair share of box swapping over the years but I'm sat listening to Pure Phase by Spiritualized and literally have a tear in my eye.
One of the things I love about Croft is that 10 days ago I was in the fella's living room where he builds these amps and now I'm talking to New York where one of his bits of kit resides.

What's the first thing you listened to through it ?

The first Itunes song was "Harvest Moon" by Cassandra Wilson which
is an Apple Lossless file and I was blown away by the depth ,air and emotion of the song.
The first LP was Leonard Cohen "You Want it Darker" and again the same presentation ,only
better either because it was vinyl or a good recording or both.
I am going to try rolling a few valves in the phono stage since I have a stash
of NOS valves to play with.
I'm also trying to see if I can smooth the top end just a bit.

Is that a Neil Young cover ? If so, an amazing song.
I can't add anything of value regarding tube rolling I'm afraid. I'm strictly Plug And Play, but I'm guessing you're in for some fun.
I've changed the mood and now listening to a new band called Working Mens Club. If a 10 minute guitar wig-out sounds appealing check their song Angel.
Shame we're not having this convo over a beer at Jimmy's Corner.......
