Some tasty stuff here:

The only item there that would interest me would be one of the Studer A80-RC reel-to-reel machines.
And possibly the modified Quad AM8/16 (to add to my collection of Quad gear), or a pair with the Rogers LS5/8 speakers.

Why the fook couldn't they have created a pdf, listing all the gear in proper categories? Too lazy, no doubt, that's why... So I gave up reading all the jumbled up words after the first few sentences, much as I do posts here without paragraphs! Oh and some pics of the gear for sale [just a few selective ones] wouldn't have hurt either, to 'cheer things up'.
Much like we always say here about placing ads in our classifieds section: if you want stuff to sell, then PUT IN THE REQUIRED EFFORT, to tempt potential buyers, in order to for that to happen!

I'd be interested to hear the LS 5/8s, but A.S. denigrates them. I also agree that the listing is terrible and typical of lazy powerful organisations wit big egos. You can also guarantee that the stuff has done a lot of work and will be worse for wear.

Who, or what is "A.S"?
Agree about the listing, but is it a fault of the BBC or does the fault lay with the auctioneers?
A.S = Alan Shaw of Harbeth, whom I believe is someone that Dennis admires and rates.
No idea who's fault the listing is - but whoever it should be shot!

My opinion of A.S. is not really that high, but he does often argue well on some matters.
I was given 3 infraction points for asserting that I could hear a difference between an ATC SIA150 and a Marantz power amp, the previous forum assertion being made that "all amps sound the same". A friend also confirmed the audible difference.
Two years later A.S. posted with amazement that he had heard a difference between two power amps. I PM'd him asking for the removal of the infraction points, and also for an apology, there was no answer.
I've had PMs of sympathy from other members saying things like; "What next, lines or detention?"

If you are serious you can request a catalogue, there is a link to order one on the site.
In the last one I saw which was BBC TV Centre clear-out the prices some of the stuff went for were astronomical. No bargains. Then you see it all on eBay later with another margin added. Needless to say it doesn't sell. You still can't beat the forum classifieds for bargains IMO.
Absolutely... Sales like this aren't about getting bargains; they're about offloading 'desirable gear' to collectors/enthusiasts often with more money than sense, and servicing a 'cash cow'.
I'd probably like some of the gear, as I love professional broadcast equipment, but there's NO WAY I'd consider buying any of it until I could see *detailed pictures* of what it was I was getting and examine its condition [would have to be near mint, as I don't buy scruffy shite, no matter what it is], and had it confirmed that it was in full working order.
ONLY then, would I consider buying it - and then the price would have to be right - none of which is facilitated by the above list or any catalogue!

Being professional gear, it will be robust enough to withstand rough handling, but cosmetically they will probably look 'well used': chips, scratches, dings, paint worn away etc.
I have a couple of Quad 50Es which are ex BBC. They are in remarkably good condition, both electrically and cosmetically.
Sure, it just depends what you're into. I dislike scruffy looking kit, no matter how good it sounds, robust it is or how little it costs, which is why when I'm buying used gear it needs to be near mint or NOS:)

They have been using peaker pattinson auctioneers for years to auction surplus equipment off, i get regular alerts when they apear, i have had the odd bid over the years, but never won anything, as most of it goes for silly, and i mean realy silly money, but if there is something amongst it that is of interest, register, and have a go, you never know.
What i will say though is; when you see how much equipment the BBC have, and have auctioned off over the last few years, it makes one realise how big an entity they really are!

Yes of course, everything in audio that measures accurately is automatically 'transparent', so there should be no audible difference between....anything!:rolleyes:
Who the fuck are these people? They certainly aren't normal, and simply 'programmed robots', blinded by the notion that 'logic' and measurements in audio rule, uber alles. And I know where I'd have told him to stick his 'infraction points'!!!

It really does make me wonder 'how' these people actually listen, or hear to be more accurate.
I haven't heard huge amounts of kit but have been lucky enough to hear a range of expensive gear, not particularly bling but well designed expensive gear.
If you have a modicum of listening experience I just don't understand how you can't hear the differences.

Mate i think today is the day that we AGREE on something lol, and i'd add "well used gear" which will probably be a bit scruffy, not because of misuse but that it will have been used day in day out for a many number of years, mechanically you would imagine that the beeb kept the kit in fine fettle but keeping kit looking pristine wouldn't be something they'd be too fussed about I imagine.
I'd imagine that any BBC kit that is still in great condition (electrically and cosmetically) would have been 'liberated' before getting to an auction. :eyebrows:

I think the problem with blinkered views is the investment of self worth in a standpoint, when in reality we have to adapt and accept change in our lives, and admit our own errors.

Indeed, but most of those folk will never change - the blinkeredness and dogma is too deeply ingrained! And they simply won't listen to reason.

Yes, so much is it a part of them that they see it as a threat to self worth. In reality we have 'software', which is thankfully adaptable and changeable.

Haha - that is why the EMT cartridges use the Neumann 'diamond' contact arrangement, so that they could not be 'sublimated' (EMT's phrase) by employees to be used in their SME-style arms at home.
"Liberated"? is that a posh word for snaffled?:D
