Actually, it's not too bad. Dry for now, but rain forecast.

dry, reasonably bright after a very dull start. Rained all night I think.

Tomorrow is rain all day again.

Three times today we've had a dry spell long enough for the car to dry out enough for me to carry on waxing it and each time I've gone out to do it, it starts raining again!

Didn't know you had one of those. Good back-up amp.

Bought it June 2019 off of eBay but volume pot knackered so the output was at full all the time. Advertised as 'in full working order' ofc.

Pro shop don't have much on at the moment as all gigs etc cancelled so I gave them some bits and pieces to fix. £5 for a new vol pot and £30 labour... I should really learn to do this stuff myself.

Meanwhile - dry but not sunny here. Did go dark earlier so thought it might rain but it didn't and now it's gone bright again.

Raining here. It was quite heavy an hour or so ago, but has eased off and now stopped.

Macca
02-10-2020, 12:46
According to the forecast it should be raining heavily here right now. But it isn't.

Looking ahead it starts raining again at 0500 tomorrow morning and doesn't stop until 2200 on Sunday. Lovely.

Again very little rain here, just 1.5mm since noon yesterday but it is a damp misty day.

Actually it has started raining now but it's not heavy, going to get windy again tomorrow. Forecast for next week is better with just a few showers, Monday and Tuesday and then sunny after that.

Yes after 4 inches of rain in one week, I know what you mean, at least we have been spared most of the rain that fell yesterday and last night. Mind you we had no rain for 20 days before that, thats the way the weather is these days.

walpurgis
03-10-2020, 10:00
Just had a 20 min break in the deluge, just long enough to walk the mutt around the block. Pissing down again now!

Still raining here and it's really dark too. Welcome to October.

Marco
03-10-2020, 11:37
Yup, same here. Nice and cosy though with the wood burner lit, and dark days like this are perfect for watching movies, so we'll be doing that! :)

Del was meant to be having a girly night in/sleepover with two of her friends, but they've caught a stomach bug going round the college they work in, so that's been called off. Can't say I'm too disappointed, as I'd been 'instructed' lol, to go round to my dad's! Think the girlies wanted to be able to wander around in their undies without 'preying eyes':eyebrows:

Anyway, the weather's forecast to be shitty (same tomorrow), until Wednesday, where it clears up a bit, then back to the pish....

In Scotland you cannot visit another house, unless for child minding or if you are providing care of some sort. Basically we cannot visit my son, daughter in law and grandson but I can visit my mum, as we help look after her.

We are following the rules, so if we want to meet we need to go to the pub or restaurant but no house visiting.

Marco
03-10-2020, 13:28
Crazy though innit, you can meet up INSIDE in a pub or restaurant, mingling with goodness knows who, but you can't meet inside in your own house!:mental::rolleyes:

Marco.

My understanding is that you can't meet up in a pub with folk from another household, although you could sit at separate tables and shout to each other across the room...

Current rule in Scotland

While you can still meet with one other household indoors in a pub, bar or restaurant, they will now have to close by 22:00.

Pigmy Pony
03-10-2020, 15:48
As things stand, going to the pub is more hassle than it's worth. But really I didn't go very often anyway, except for a bite to eat. It's visiting friends in their homes I really miss.

approaching Holbrook mill - can sometimes catch a glimpse of a Kingfisher here, but not today unfortunately:

My understanding is that you can't meet up in a pub with folk from another household, although you could sit at separate tables and shout to each other across the room...

Exactly my point... So one wonders what makes the inside of a pub 'safer' for meeting up in that respect, than the inside of your house or that of your friends/family?

Answer: fook all, indeed the pub is likely to be less safe, simply due to a greater/wider conglomeration of people, any of whom could potentially be carrying the virus - *BUT* the government want to try and encourage folks to go out/spend money and keep the economy going.

Therefore, that's why you can still meet up with people from another household in pubs and restaurants [in England and Wales] - PROVIDING that is you're not in a local lockdown, in which case mixing with anyone other than those you live with, INDOORS ANYWHERE (other than in shops selling essential items), is prohibited until the lockdown is over.

However, meeting OUTDOORS is allowed, including gardens, up to a maximum of 30 people.

In Scotland you cannot visit another house, unless for child minding or if you are providing care of some sort. Basically we cannot visit my son, daughter in law and grandson but I can visit my mum, as we help look after her.If your son or daughter are living alone, then you can form an extended household, but only with one of them.

I think this rule still applies - https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-phase-3-staying-safe-and-protecting-others/pages/seeing-friends-and-family/#Extended%20households

Maybe visiting your mum means you can't - as you're only supposed to form one extended household.

I'm not aware of any rules which allow for the suspension of an extended household - for example - a two week gap which could be useful if one wanted to meet different people for Christmas.

Just had a message from Floodline - maybe a bridge nearby is going to close due to potential flood risks.

Macca
04-10-2020, 11:26
Floodline called me to day that there was a flood and to take immediate action. Took a walk down to the river and it would have had to come up another 20 feet to top the bank, let alone get all the way to my house and flood it. In short - bollocks. Next time I got one I ignored it. Nothing happened. If they are going to keep crying wolf then the system doesn't work.

StingRay
04-10-2020, 11:35
Certainly wetter today, only 2mm yesterday, already over 8mm and still raining.

Saw some of the golf highlights in Scotland last night, looked pretty wet, some said it was the worst conditions they have ever played in.

What about the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom?

We've been here before lol, but it's another area where you and I are so different. I need to have a nice cosy fire to snuggle up in front of during the winter months, and also be able to go into any room I use in the house and for it to be nice and warm.

It also helps prevent dampness in the house, as cold rooms encourage it, so I'd have invested in a proper fire in your lounge and heating system as a priority when I moved in, single or not, and long before I spent money on TVs or hi-fi!!:ner:;)

For me, a house has to be cosy/warm and inviting at all times, and if it's not it gets me down.

It's 19C in the living room right now. That's comfortable temperature. Don't like a warm bedroom. Only thing I do in the bedroom is sleep so no need for heating. There's a fan if it gets too hot in the summer though.

No damp problems in this house after 119 years so I'd guess there won't be ever. I doubt that they were heating all the rooms at once back in 1901.

Heating rooms that aren't in use is a waste of money IMO. My total bill for power each month is only £60.

Lol, as I said, we're quite different in that respect. You know I don't like a warm bedroom either, but neither do I like a cold one. Cool is different from cold. It's about striking the right balance, which is comfortable. You want every room in your house, which is used regularly, to be INVITING to enter and stay in, not the opposite.

I don't like walking into any room in the house and finding it chilly, especially when I've become accustomed to the warmth of the main room that's been heated, such as the lounge. Nothing worse than going for a pish, only to be met with a loo that, in comparison, feels like a fridge!;)

It isn't good for you either. So is that fan heater the only form of heating you've got - what happens in the middle of winter when it can be -10C or below? You're not going to convince me that it stays toasty and warm all day with just quick blast of hot air from that thing?:ner:

That's what I pay each month, and that includes items left on 24/7: such as preamps; my electrostatic speakers, as well as fridge and freezer and anything else on 'standby'. The main thermostat is set at 18C for the central heating, and in the less-frequented rooms (spare bedrooms), the individual radiator thermostats are set low.

There is no heating in the kitchen, as it is only used when cooking, which heats up the room.

I think ours is about £80 a month. It'd be a LOT more if we didn't have the wood burner. And of course that doesn't include what we spend on logs or smokeless coal, which costs around £40 a month.

Del won't get dressed or undressed in a cold room, so when it's autumn/winter, her 'dressing room' (the spare room, lol) or our bedroom, must be a constant 18C. Same goes for the loo, especially when she's taking a shower.

Is that cosy little table, which doubles as a 'Berni Inn', where Happy and you have your meals, not in the kitchen then?;)

We've got central heating radiators in the kitchen, but they're rarely used unless we're having folks over for lunch or dinner during the coldest winter months, and the oven isn't being used.

I have a little electric radiator for background heat. I just use the fan heater if it's chilly first thing in the morning. And I can always fire up the Krell KSA100 if it's really cold. That's literally a 600 watt fan heater.

It isn't bad for you health not heating the whole house. How do you think people managed before gas central heating? Most could not afford to have a coal or wood fire going in every room and double glazing and insulation were unheard of.

The house I grew up in was always cold even with central heating. Lead light windows, no double or secondary glazing, draughts everywhere. This house I have now is much warmer as it's double glazed and fully draught-proofed. It's only when it gets down below zero that I have to think about putting on a fleece or something.

Lol... It's not so much for the heat, but in terms of making the room LOOK warm and cosy, so I have to have some sort of 'warm glow' in the room, acting as a heat source. I simply couldn't function in the dark winter months without that, or the room illuminated by some sort of flame (as I don't like bright lights). It's just comforting and relaxing:)

Indeed, but back then most folk would have had a coal fire in their lounge, even if the rest of the house wasn't heated. And it's not particularly good for you going from a warm room into a cold one. Yes, you get by, but it's not ideal - and if you can afford better (as you can), then for me it makes sense to have the house properly heated.

As I've said, we're just very different in that respect... Any house I lived in, on my own or otherwise, would have to be both centrally heated and have some sort of proper fire, acting as a centrepiece in the lounge, stylish and comfortable furniture (based on my idea of that), a fully kitted-out kitchen, with brand new appliances, same with the bathroom, and a bedroom with a proper bed in it, not just a sleeping bag!:ner::D;)

And all that WAY BEFORE I spent a penny on TVs or hi-f!! But, as I said, we're all different:)

You can buy a lot of central heating or double glazing on the costs of a heavy habit of any of the above!

It's amazing how many nice things folks who indulge heavily in those habits could have, if they didn't indulge in them, or did so more moderately.... So it's not always about 'affording' things; it simply depends on how you spend your disposable income:)

Gosh that is high, that's well more than I pay for gas and electric although I got a good deal last year, looks like prices have gone up.

Heating empty rooms is not a waste, as can keep the damp away. I just have the rooms not being used on a low setting and open the doors everyday but I don't live a castle or mansion.

Surprisingly I found it did not make much difference to the heating costs, some reckon leaving the heating on all day is cheaper than switching it on and off, it will depend on the insulation, boiler type and the climate though. Modern condensing boilers are most efficient running at lower temp. around 65C than the old boiler which run at higher temperatures. Modern boilers are more efficient but may not last so long. I don't use any electric for heating, all my mine is gas.

I don't have my heating on at night.

My last house used to get very cold because out all day at work, I think the secret is to not let it get cold, say under 15C then it does not take much to warm up. When I stopped work, the heating bill did not go up even with the heating during the day and of course it was warmer in the evening. This house could do with cavity wall insulation and is open plan but it's not too bad, unless we have the "beast from the east".

My thermostat is on a 20 min. cycle, if its over 2C below the set temp. it is on most of the time but as it gets warm then it is on less minutes each cycle, this is more efficient than having it on all the time until the set temperature is hit, then going off then coming back on after about 20 mins then on for about 15 minutes then off for maybe over an hour then starting over again.

I think some wishful thinking about hot climates, I take it those people have not spent much time in hot climates?

The UK has a moderate climate, not too hot and not too cold. I do find sunshine everyday very boring.

I could live in a hot climate but would rather stay here.

I wasn't talking about the tropics. Plenty of places we could have gone that have better weather without it being too much. What about California? Northern India? The Caribbean?

Granted it might have been a bit of a squeeze fitting us all into the Caribbean islands. But there are also some French and Spanish ones we could have taken over whilst they were busy occupying the British Isles. By the time they'd realised what a mistake they'd made it would be too late.

California, full of americans.

Northern Indian, yes I have been there, extreme weather, almost desert, baking hot during the day and cool at night, then there are other problems, Delhi belly, not somewhere I would choose to live, ok to visit for a month or so. Not been to the Caribbean apart from Cuba, not sure the weather is better than here and there is a lot of poverty.

If I had to pick somewhere, it probably would be New Zealand, that's fairly close to the UK weatherwise. Parts of Australia maybe ok also.

Parts of the UK are better than Stoke.

Yes, that would probably apply to anywhere in the States worth living, but at least the areas I mentioned would have great appeal, especially during the times when the weather wasn't 'challenging', so for me that would more than make up for the times when is was! Whereas California would simply be hot and shite all year round!;)

More seriously, as I said, that's why if I were choosing somewhere different to live, it would more than likely be Austria or Switzerland. There would be no downsides for me living in either of those two countries, especially with the latter offering fast access to Germany, France and Italy!:)

There's nothing wrong with being proud to be British - *if* you are British and FEEL British!;)

Although Del and I were born in the UK, we're really not 'British' in the true sense, as in that's fundamentally not how we feel or what best represents our ethnic culture.

Based on our respective parents and where we were born, Del feels (and is) Welsh/German, and I feel (and am) Scottish/Italian. That's precisely how we live our lives, and why we feel entirely comfortable and 'at home' when visiting other European countries:)

And between us fluently speaking French, Italian and German certainly also helps!

Also know someone who went from UK to Canada but could not hack, had breathing problems and had to come back. We had distant relatives (cousins two/three times removed) visit from Canada when I was a kid, I still remember them going on about how cold it felt in Hertfordshire - they felt it was the damp cold that they couldn't cope with.

I also remember having a holiday in Morocco, up in the Anti Atlas mountain area the temperature was in the thirties but felt fine as there was so little humidity - any perspiration evaporated immediately so I didn't get that horrible sticky feeling, really quite enjoyable as long as you kept hydrated.

Hi Ray, I have been puzzled by your posts about the amount of rain you are getting (when it has been quite dry here) - just looked it up and it looks like the Shotley peninsula (I live on the edge of it, not quite in the AONB) really is special, it seems to trundle along at about 100mm per annum.

Some are very dry - which makes 33/34C really quite cosy and very manageable. Raise the humidity and it would be unpleasant. For example, travel from CA to Hawaii - the temperature will go down but the humidity will go up - yuk!

Back in CA it has been known to freeze later on though - allbeit fairly rarely. Obviously it'll go below zero up the mountains - but I mean at low altitudes. Tends to ruin the citrus crops - and probably the grape crops too, which is something which also afflicts UK vineyards.

Tibetan tea is, and let's be diplomatic, an "acquired taste". However their barley beer, called 'Chang' is quite refreshing and enjoyable - bet they don't serve that in Las Vegas.

Incidentally, some think Iceland was so named as to deter visitors from what was a hermitage founded by monks from Ireland (there is written evidence, but no archaeological evidence for this), whereas Greenland was so named to attract settlers. Ironically Iceland is greener than Greenland, and Greenland has more ice than Iceland.

Just cut my lawn for hopefully the last time this season.

Been bright and warm(ish) here all afternoon, Cut grass and indeed, Monster and Little Timid were overseeing. Pulled up some paving slabs to trace tree roots (from tree in road) that is damaging my property, my back is suffering a bit now, too old for this game!

Things look a bit lively for Ireland at the moment. They're bang in the middle of a cyclone that's drifted in from the Atlantic.

What you need is a two-pronged attack - saw through the offending roots to prevent further growth, they'll eventually rot, and get Monster and Little Timid to use tree as a scratching post :)
