View Full Version : Get Yer Turntables Out For The Lads 2020
The Vinyl Adventure
13-09-2020, 14:47
This was VERY popular last time it was done but that's a few years ago now, YNWAN won it if I remember correctly.
Anyway I thought it would be a good idea to run a new one as a lot has changed on AOS in the last few years. To all you analogue diehards who have pride in your vinyl spinners here's a chance to show it off and practice your photography skills.
Rules are simple..............
Post as many different decks as you want, all at once or spread out in between other postings.
The images must be of your own personal turntable not a library image.
The winning image will be judged on both the photographic skills of the owner and the way the image is presented.
PRIZES are being offered for the best ones courtesy of The Vinyl Adventure.
The thread will run until Christmas for allocation of prizes, winners will be chosen by Capt Daffteee and myself.
Obviously I am not participating for a prize so am starting the thread off with one of my own below.
BTW photobucket still works you just have to pay them money now, dropbox can be used to upload and store your images or if you struggle, email me the image itself and I will post it up.
Prizes for the best pictures are as follows:
Winner gets £100 worth of vinyl and or accessories of their choice off the TVA website
2nd prize is £75 worth of vinyl or accessories
3rd prize is £50 worth of vinyl or accessories

Maybe at some point. I'm afraid they will be pretty poor.
I am not going to win with a modified SL1200, but enjoy seeing what exotic equipment other forum members have.

Lol well I was just following the AoS sticky about how to upload pics to this forum - still recommends Photobucket... maybe needs updating? thanks for the compliments btw!
I would be interested to know why adding pictures requires the use of a 'third party' to post a picture at all? The forum software, which is virtually the same as many others, actually supports the facility to post pictures of a selected size, but it's not activated in AoS? (Only produces a thumnail).
I use the 'attachments' icon in other forums that allow the posting of either a full size picture or a thumnail, but that method doesn't work in AoS.
Any reason why pse?
Apologies, this looks like a bit of a hijack. My question should probably be located elsewhere? Mods pse relocate as fit, ta.

The grandaddy of the Michell turntables - 1070s Michell Hydraulic Reference with an acrylic platter and spindle extension. Michell originally built the Hydraulic Reference under licence from Transcriptors.
https://i.vgy.me/A8j4lL.jpg
https://i.vgy.me/rYBTK2.jpg
Michell refurbished the platter for me a few years ago - they did an outstanding job.
https://i.vgy.me/xtR8Hs.jpg
This is an export model I bought when I lived in the USA so the pods are different from most Hydraulic References - they are actually the same as the later Electronic Reference.
The Hydraulic Reference is also quite a movie star - a version was in A Clockwork Orange - some of you will know where "playing your fuzzy warbles" originated. And those pods turned up as C3PO's eyes in the original Star Wars trilogy, not to mention other Michell bits that were part of Bobba Fett's attire.

1st up we have Triggers Broom, it started it's life as a Rega Planar 3, the only thing left from the original deck is the bearing sleeve. From the bottom up the deck is stood on a 50mm birch ply platform, has an SRM Tech Silent base, 30mm birch ply plinth with rosewood veneer, 26mm Fidelity Design Delrin platter, topped off with an Audiomods series 6 arm and Audio Technica Art9 cart.

Next up the Thorens TD160 Super, this has been re plinthed in solid 22mm oak, the top plate has been replaced and the deck is topped off with an SME 3009 mk2 improved and a Dynavector 10x5 cart, again the deck is stood on a birch ply platform this time 30mm

One of mine, an AG401 Sable, with an Audiomods Classic micrometer arm, sitting in a twin arm Acoustand plinth.
It's a mahoosive thing, as both armboards are designed to accommodate 9, 10 and 12" arms.

Nice kit, plasterer's due any day I guess :D
LOL - I guess it does look a bit rough and ready.....
I like the 'rough and ready' look, especially if there are some exposed beams to go with the look. But I would be concerned about possible dust, or are the walls 'sealed'?
Nice EMT 930. :) I have one and am pleased to see you have mounted yours properly - many users don't: they just let the TT rest on the sub-frame.

Yes exposed beams in the loft listening room and the wall was cleaned/repointed and chimney breast is free from any damp etc...
Also, I cover my set after use with a cloth to avoid any dust and the EMT is just dropped into a re-modelled Sound Organisation turntable stand.

Top notch, Mike. The red vinyl really sets it off! So how's that sounding as a combo? Should be impressive!:)

Anyone who plays vinyl that is not black should, IMO, be disqualified from the competition. :D

Really happy with how it looks and how it sounds, I liked my modded 1210 but always thought the looks let it down, yeah I know that shouldn’t matter but this looks in a totally different league, took me a long time to come around to the square shape of the SP10 but now that I see it all together with the, plinth, feet, arm and headshell I’m delighted with it.
Sounds great too and I’m totally settled on the vinyl side, in fact I’ve not bought any kit in ages, couple of spare cartridges and vinyl is all I’ve bought lately and not been posting much as I’ve just been listening, very happy bunny here [emoji4]

Good stuff, Mike. It looks great, and I'm sure sounds it, too:)
I've heard a lot of SP10s, similarly set up in slate plinths, so I know how good they are. Not sure I agree though on the looks of the 1210, as long as a) it's a 1210 MK5G (not a fan of the aesthetics of MK2s), b) the tonearm fitted suits it, aesthetically, and for me that means something Japanese with a detachable headshell [plus the fitting of an ebony armboard], and c) the horrible stock platter [how I hate strobe markings:spew:] is replaced with the likes of a Mike New one, with a decent mat on top...
That done, for me it looks pretty good [even better though with the pitch slide-control removed, and a plain top-plate]:

How do you find the 103M, Andy? IMO, it's arguably the best Denon have ever produced!:)
Very low output though, so needs a good high-gain phono stage. That done, the quality (and fine detail) of the sound, and lucidness of vocals, is stunning.

Hi Marco, it is a truly stunning cart but the Linn arm I think lets it down a little.
Once I have the 12 inch wood arm dialled in I will move it to this and see if it will sing more - the Cairn Boost seems to handle it's low output very well :)

Thanks and well appreciated... There was some good work but those Sony spinners locked out the competition...
Its a fix - not a belt drive in sight
Congrats to the winners - all very nice looking TT's :D
Lol... TBH, as far as I'm concerned, I wasn't paying much attention to that, but rather how good/well presented the overall pics were, and how the T/Ts themselves looked, and so essentially how much effort the owners had put into constructing the resulting image(s).
The latter is an important point to consider, as to win this type of competition, it's not simply a case of plonking down your turntable, no matter how good it looks, and snapping a pic; it's about the backdrop chosen, the lighting, different camera angles/use of artistic flair, and the judicious application of all of that in creating the submitted entries, which is why some winners were awarded a prize, significantly for the effort they'd put in, in that respect.
A small point, in terms of presentation, when posting pics of turntables, is that for me it *always* looks better to include pics with records on the platter spinning and playing, and the arm and cartridge 'in motion', as it were, rather than T/Ts simply sitting idle. Points will always be awarded for that, and also for nice clear, loving close-ups!:)
Anyway, thanks again to all who participated. Congrats to the winners and to David for his generosity in awarding some nice prizes - oh and even though the competition's over, folks, keep the pics coming!

Appreciate that, thank you very very much!
That old Sony and its execution plus photography was my favourite...

What is the arm on your lovely Sony?
It´a Schick tonearm. https://thomas-schick.com/en/produkte/12-schick-arm
It's really a very handsome arm.
Congrats all, Some really nice turntables there and would be happy to own any of them, I just wish my photographic skills whereas good but alas no, time to look for a new camera :).

Can we have a re run please as I missed this completely :(
It's really a very handsome arm.
Yup, right up my alleyway (as I love high quality, hand-built bespoke equipment), and it's a superb match for low-compliance MCs, specially SPUs!:)
The combo of the Schick arm on that drop-dead gorgeous Sony, made it a no-brainer winner, IMO. For me, both Sacha's and your T/T are equally lovely, in different ways, but I prefer his arm.
Not a big fan of modern SMEs, sorry. I prefer their older stuff, such as the 3012 or the modern equivalent M2-12R (or their 9-inch counterparts), which I think has sadly now been discontinued:
https://hifilounge.co.uk/product/sme-series-m2-12r-tonearm/
I've also always preferred the look of classic 'J-shaped' Jap detachable headshell arms, in preference to the 'straight' design/look. Just a personal thing... *BUT* - aesthetically the SME suits the lines on your T/T perfectly, and so taken as a whole it looks superb!
You should give a Schick a go sometime, as I suspect you'd LOVE how it sounds, which is quite different from the SME.
Marco.

I couldn't agree more. The TTS3000 and Schick are a gorgeous combination. Very elegant and understated.

Thanks for the kind comments Marco. Much appreciated. I get where you're coming from with regard to the later SMEs. I've got an open mind on the subject but I must tell you the TTS-8000 and V-12 are a superb combination sonically and deliver the sound I'm after. That said, I've also got a phonomac fettled SP10 cut for a 12" SME, so the 3012 and M2-12R are on my watchlist. Unfortunately, until I find a job, I doubt I'll be making any significant purchases.

I think the Schick has just made it to the top of the list in preference to the 3012 or M2-12R. :) Thanks for that.
No worries, mate. The Schick would work a treat on the SP10. Then fit one of these to it: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HIGHPHONIC-DL-103PRO-MC-Moving-Coil-Phono-Cartridge-JAPAN-NEW-denon-diamond-RARE/193842705540?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.S EED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3D0e98a 3167ee548799c3e0a6aa3d8a840%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D 4%26rkt%3D15%26mehot%3Dnone%26sd%3D193841438669%26 itm%3D193842705540%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380 057&_trksid=p2380057.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Ab70540cb-56c6-11eb-bfc5-f2548a99469b%7Cparentrq%3A036542ae1770a69f89212ed2 ffbf4f4a%7Ciid%3A1

I don't doubt it but I've got a Kiseki Purpleheart sitting idle so I'll probably use that initially.

Yes, I guess you'll just have to 'slum it' with that until then!:D

The Sony is a belt-drive but it's the right kind of belt drive. The motor is bigger than my fist... The belt is of a non-stretchy kind. They were used for broadcast duties in Norway!

SME any model is not a touch on the "proper" arms out there, the V was nearly £5.5k before they stopped selling it direct that's far too much when you have brands like REED available for less.
https://www.thevinyladventure.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/reed-3p-tonearm04.jpg
Then in the ultra high end you have Acoustical Systems who made a limited edition arm for 50,000 euros and sold all 21 of them within weeks.

Absolutely love my Reed. Style and substance in one superbly engineered package . So simple to set up and use too .

The Reed does look like a well engineered arm
Here's the Lenco GL75 with the 12 inch wooden arm in use and sounding supberb :)

I know this is not going to win any photography awards. I just wanted to share the joy I am getting from my recent purchase. I even bought a new copy of AWB as the old (original) one was sounding a bit worn out. Still can't believe these guys were from Dundee...
Not started the upgrade journey just yet, although I guess I have as the headshell is a new genuine Techie one, and I've tried it with and without the rubber grommets on the armplate (currently back in). Guess a mat is next... Not in the photo, I have it sat on a thick acrylic board, board on spikes. Sounds fabulous. Really enjoying the sound...;)
