I was looking for a replacement for my DL110 ( which I really liked) but didn't want to buy the wrong cart ie one which I personally couldn't get on with. I have a DL103r on another tt which I like but wanted to try something different. I started looking at SPU's but having been made redundant recently they were a little pricey especially when factoring in a SUT.
After reading Marco's enthusiastic words re. the SC36c cart I decided to try one. A Mexican body and stylus arrived this week, a NOS USA stylus is on its way. I've mounted the cart on my Jelco 750D/Garrard 401. It sounds very nice indeed and will hopefully be even better with the USA stylus fitted.
I want to try a different cart alignment which I think will suit this cart better than the Baerwald which I normally use, hope to try this at the weekend.
What VTF are you guys using on these? I found an old thread which suggested 3.5g was good. More to follow.

The cartridge alignment is determined solely by the design of the arm, which is down to the manufacturer. Thus you should use the alignment protractor provided with the arm. If you want to use a different alignment presciption, you will need to alter both the overhang and the offset angle; the latter of which can only be done by skewing the cartridge in the headshell, and can be difficult to do whilst also adjusting for overhang.
I believe Jelco arms are designed to follow the Stevenson alignment geometry, as are most Japanese arms. You can check by looking at the vinylengine forum.
Hi Charlie,
Nice one on the SC35C:)
If you think it sounds good now, just wait until you hear it with a NOS stylus!:eyebrows: Night and day doesn't quite describe it...
Just a few points... Firstly in terms of alignment, try Stevenson, as I think that could work well with the Jelco, as Jap arms tend to prefer that to Baerwald. Secondly, and trust me I know the score here, you *must* use the SC35C with a heavy (high-mass) headshell, yes heavier than the stock Jelco.
The ideal figure I've found is 17/18g! So look for some of the quality aftermarket items from the likes of Audio Technica: https://www.divineaudio.co.uk/product/audio-technica-at-lh18-occ-18g-occ-technichard-headshell/ or fit a 'shim', of the appropriate mass, between the cartridge and headshell of the Jelco, to take it up to that weight. otherwise you will NOT hear the full potential that this cartridge is capable of.
In terms of VTF, the optimal setting, to my ears, is 4.5g, with anti-skate set at around 4.1g. Anything less than that will result in audible distortion with 'difficult', highly modulated material and cause it to mis-track. It will 'work' at 3.5g, but sub-optimally. And anything more than 4.5g, up to the max of 5g, tends to rob the sound of 'life'
But at 4.5g, it tracks like a limpet and sails through the most difficult of material with aplomb, plus with kick-ass bass and lifelike dynamics and 'attack', especially with the NOS Shure stylus! Plus, as discussed elsewhere, adding some extra capacitance, via the us of loading plugs, REALLY makes it sing.
Hope that helps:cool:
Marco.

Yep defo, I used to use Baerwald on my japanese arms but using Stevenson on my Technics EPA-A250 - the sound is just more evenly right, right across each side
Yes, I've been listening to Stevenson 1A which optimises end of side alignment for LP playback with no compromise for 7 inch singles ( which I never play).
Anti-skate above 3g isn't possible with the Jelco arm so I hope it will suffice.
No sure, Charlie, but you can always try. Hopefully it'll be ok, as there are so many variables governing these things:)
But Stevenson is defo the alignment you want, and as I said use it with a heavy headshell.
Marco.
The USA stylus arrived today looking v. nice in its mint condition box with brush included - lovely, looks like something I've just purchased new from the local record shop( to use old parlance)! Not much spare time today but had a listen with the Mexican stylus first, then swapped and fitted the USA job. The USA is clearly a better fit with no gaps between it and the cart body. Only had time for 'All Blues' from KOB but I seem to hear a more refined, smoother/more natural sound with the USA stylus fitted. Am using the Stevenson 1A alignment which I will stick with but need to experiment with extra mass at the headshell/counterweight as per Marco's suggestions.
I was stung by customs duty again:steam: but even so this has worked out a good buy compared to carts I had been considering, another MC would require a SUT so quite an expensive idea at the end of the day. Even some other MMs were more expensive than the Shure so this has worked out well for me.
More tweaking to follow!:)

Welcome to the SC35C club Charlie. I'm sure you will like it no matter what you play but especially anything that has driving basslines :eyebrows:

Thanks Darren. It's already sounding very nice in the stock Jelco 750D but will hopefully be even better when I follow Marco's advice and add some mass.:)
Nice one, Charlie. Glad you're liking it so far! Yes definitely add some mass. You want 17g at the headshell, so weigh your headshell and make up whatever is necessary.
This is an effective thing to use for adding 3g, if you go for the thickest one (and I've used this seller in Italy before and he's excellent): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GRAPHITE-MC-STABILIZER-SMORZATORE-VIBRAZIONI-PER-TESTINA-GIRADISCHIIN-GRAFITE-HD/251599599502

I listened to the SC35c in my stock Jelco750D. Promising performance but bass was soft and obviously not right.
Now, not long ago I made a brass shim/weight to do a similar experiment with my DL103r on a FR64fx tonearm, this combination didn't benefit from the extra mass so I removed the shim. I've had to wait for some longer cart screws to arrive but at last I've been able to add the 8g brass shim to the Shure cart/Jelco headshell and also added the Jelco heavy c/weight. The bass has improved greatly as expected but more suprising is the detail that this simple conical stylus can dig out. Very nice, and I still have loading plugs to try but am not covinced that I need them.
Hi Marco,
My SC35C is nos white stylus lettering, but instructions says copyright 1989. The stylus is 0.0006in and under my magnifying glass looks identical to the eBay one. The cantilever reminds me of my Pickering styli, I call them mini RSJ’s, short cantilever with low compliance carts do it for my system very nicely. On the SL 150 for the last month I have had my 1978 Nos pPickering NP/AC with polished diamond stylus playing at 3 g on the old sme3009 detachable head shell. 10mv output, superb sound, brilliant dynamics, a lighter cart suits the Sme3009. Now on my SLD303, I have a 13g additional counterweight on the standard arm. Reason being that I play the Pickering U38 nude diamond spherical stylus. VTF 5g. The cart weighs 14 g! Stereo separation 35 db too. Pain to mount in the cartridge and gives a dull sound on the sme3009 but opens up nicely on the Sld 303 arm.
Thanks to your great enthusiasm and information here, I will now mount the Shure cart in my Lo D headshell, combined wight with cart and screws = 17 g. I will try around 4.5 VTf, but the SLD303 max anti skate is 3. I use the standard Ortofon protractor, 52 mm overhang. I always adjust to taste anyway. This is an Art, right!
Cheers, Steve
...ok just reread the 17 g HEADSHELL recommendation, so for now gonna have to try a coin and newplast on top of the Lo D which is only 10 g. As always I will give the stylus time to break in before listening seriously.
I have 20g headshell plus the fixings and cartridge itself, sounds good to me but how much is too much? On Marco's recommendation I want to experiment with loading plugs in the not-too-distant future. 180pF I think?

Indeed, and exactly as I've found, too. Are you using a NOS Shure stylus? Those are in a different league from any modern equivalents, as they use a narrower gauge and more refined tip, which is what gives it the detail you're hearing.
Trust me, you've still got more to come from experimenting with loading. I was also sceptical as to whether or not it was necessary, but when you find the TRUE sweet spot, you'll know, and then everything just clicks into place!:)
I'm not surprised that the shim was a retrograde step with the 103 on your FR64, as the arm would've presented more than enough effective mass in stock form, without the need for the shim. The Jelco is different, as it's not as high-mass as the FR. With the NOS conical stylus on the SC35C, you've aiming for around 17g on the headshell. I think the Jelco headshell is around 12g, so you're talking about adding another 5g.
Marco.

Interesting stuff, and I like the sound of that Pickering! Sounds similar to the sonic signature of an original gold-bodied Stanton 500AL, which really boogied! No problem, 17g is what you're looking for with 4.5g VTF. Enjoy and let us know how you get on:)

I would, Charlie. Yes probably something around that figure. Just suck it and see. 20g is probably too much on the headhell. though. I'd say 18g tops, then afterwards you're likely to be over-egging the pudding.
This is probably the perfect headshell onto which to mount an SC35C, without the need for any shims: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audio-technica-head-shell-15117354-AT-LH18-OCC-White-genuine-from-JP-NEW/254517341875?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOME SPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D225076%26meid%3D7a4032 9a067045da857162da7f40bd3b%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1 %26rkt%3D7%26mehot%3Dlo%26sd%3D163824762788%26itm% 3D254517341875%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675% 26algv%3DSimplAMLv5PairwiseWebWithDarwoV3BBEV2b%26 brand%3DAudio-Technica&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

Hi Marco,
At the same time you posted above I was trying a NOS Stanton D5107L (500AL, disco use) 1918 k, in place of the Black Chicken stylus, on the U38.
Haha it looked ridiculous and fragile (as unlike Shure, the Stanton, Pickering styli are a round pipe), so I was hesitant to try more than about20 seconds on the record.
Anyway...wide grin time..it rocks..beefy sound and very nice to know I’ll have styli for ever given that Stanton/ Pickering are interchangeable (+artistic use of craft knife and something sticky to get a good plastic stylus wrap fit).
The chicken head is better as it is nude of course. A similar sound to the SC35C too (so far), I think the U38 is superb on the right records, the 35 db separation is a bonus, and it beats the best of my other carts in front to back soundstage, e.g. mp50. I’m currently listening to Portishead Portishead and it’s awesome. A nod to the Techi SLD303 auto here, it’s specs (78 sn and 0.025 wow flutter), are better than the Sld 150, just saying. Also there is a metal plate in the chassis attached to the bearing which connects also to the tonearm base, maybe giving the bearing good bracing and some resonance matching with the tonearm, needless to say it is also damped now with Newplast clay.
Btw, your posts on purchasing the capacitance measuring kit from the states, should get great credit from any audiophile. Capacitance matching as per shure, Pickering etc manufacturers recommendation is down to trial and error, for most peeps (even if they are aware). But it’s surely essential. It’s on my shopping list.
Hey this is fun. Just a bit of background here...
20 years back I bought the Meridian 508 20 bit, and partnered with a Chord Dac 64 it was fabulous (same DPA stuff as in my signature). The DPA and Opera Callas Gold 2, and especially black 16 cable are a match made in hi fi heaven too. So the cd and Dac alone was £3500 worth of kit back in 2001 ish...but I knew something was missing. 5 ago years For a laugh I bought the SLD303 and found a Nos Technics 207ED, I already had the Schitt mani and Rega 1 with Carbon cart (bfday pressie) played through a ScittMani - I found this a bit sterile, like I found CD. However when I hooked up the SLD303 and 207 ED, I knew instantly what I had been missing. The SLD303 and cart was £150, Schmitt mani £120. A very very good combo, the Sl150 with Nagaoka MP50 is better, but not always, and only on some records.
Sorry for the digression...
So still early days in my vinyl renaissance!

Yes it is. The Shure SC35C is/was a popular cartridge for broadcast use as it can withstand rough handling and a certain amount of back cuing. yet still has a more than acceptable SQ. I use an EMT TT and when I bought a spare EMT-G headshell, it came with a Shure SC35C body.

That cartrige looks to be a Goldring G 800 - another reasonably priced cartridge favoured by the BBC.
Just a quick update. After messing about with additional headshell weight I settled on 5g so with the Jelco headshell at 12g I'm running around 17g total. So Marco's advice spot-on. I also tried some loading plugs and settled on 150pF ( which obviously might vary in other set-ups but sounds great in mine).
Now I have to admit that initially I was feeling underwhelmed by the sound produced and started researching new carts. However, I'm not one for making snap purchases and it dawned on me some weeks ago that I was now enjoying music very much. I think the NOS stylus just needed running in for a while. I now hear balanced sound ( what I mean more specifically is a natural frequency range, no HF emphasis which I detest) , good detail, separation of instruments and very low surface noise ( in fact pretty much non-existent on good vinyl).

Sorry to jump on have you or anyone else (Marco) tried this with the N35X stylus

Or tried upgrading the body to either a wood or aluminium paradox body?
Thanks

I have two of these cartridges, one in a Panzerholz body, no difference in sound with the stock one, at least to my ears. This cartridge is no Denon DL-103 and the body doesn't have a large effect on its sound. The only downside of the stock body is that it's easy to deform if you overtighten the screws.
So best not to follow Linn's advice of tightening up the fixings until you strip the threads, then slacken off by a quarter turn! :D

I have wondered about a re-body, problem is the blue plastic of the stylus assembly is rather large and looks quite gawky. Secondly, I'm in a good place at the moment and I'm quite content just listening to music:)
There was a lot of interest in the Tonar Diabolic E cartridge recently, one mod was to remove the red paint from the cantilever. Has anyone tried that on the SC35c?

I have the Audio Technica 18gm headshell I can use on my SL1200 MKII. I have been on the KAB USA website and it says I need 32gm of weight on the rear stub using their weights. Is this correct as it seems a lot to me. What are you using in yours Marco or anyone else?

How can I identified if this Shure sc35c is a Mexico or USA made.
Not written anything?
What is written on the topside of the cartridge body?
If it not something to do with the colour of the writing?
I thought I'd read something about that but can't remember where.

Just out of interest I looked out the one I bought a while back to see which version I had. Interesting find as I hadn't checked before.
White writing on stylus front and Made in USA on the rear of the cartridge and on the box.
Happy Days :)

If it says "Made in the U.S.A", then it is.
If it says "Shure", then it has been assembled in Mexico (using parts made by Shure in the US).
To me it makes little difference: the SC25C was designed for the BBC intended to be used in situations where back cueing is likely. It is thus a robust cartridge fitted with a conical stylus; and in my experience is not worth making a fuss over.
Like the Shure M3D (and to a much lesser extent, the M55E) it is a dated and over-hyped Shure design.

The m55e and sc35c sound good to some of us !!!!
Having owned and listened to all three over the years, I stick by my comments.
i liked my m55e original nos stylus. not the most refined thing but it was a great, punchy listen with my dd deck. of course im not particularly refined myself, except with whisky and wimen:eyebrows:
The M55E was a re-badged Shure V15 Mk.I. As a 'nail' is wasn't too bad, but not as good as the B&O SP10 cartridges of the time (which cost about the same as a Shure M3D).

i had a b&o cart.. one of the old ones and it was also excellent; in fact i would say, far better than the 55e. was a steel barrel shape. might have been a sp1... was a super thing.

He's not posted in over a year on here. Consensus seems to say the USA variant is the best, but let your ears do the decision making.
