A bit of a long shot but does anyone have an old Quad 405 which is out of service/for parts? I want to replace the transformer on one of mine because it has a loud mechanical buzz....

Thanks!

I had the same problem and purchase a torodial transformer from Farnell, which I rigged up externally to try out. It worked really well and no buzz. From memory it was about £30.

I was going to fit internally by removing the old transformer but never go around to it, as it's only a spare power amp.

Thanks Martin, I didn’t think a new one could come in so cheap. The ones I’ve seen have been around £150. I’ll have another search.

Note; apologies, I’ve made a double thread when trying to edit the title last night. I’ve tried contacting a mod to get it deleted.

I looked up the invoice. It is an RS Components part and with postage was £44.74 in 2016 .

Hopefully the picture will attach.

Thanks again Martin. That appears to be the same type that RedhillAudio fit, so it must be decent, and the right size. I think that’s probably my best bet...

Did you keep the original rectifier?

edit; it’s 115mm which just squeezes in!

No problem, I know it took me a while to find the right one.

Yes I have kept the rectifier and only connected the new transformer to the existing transformer wires. Very simple to prove it works.

Good luck, it's nice and quiet!
