Jelco 750D sits too low on 1200.

Just attached my 750D to this newly acquired bit of loveliness, its ok, but the cart sits very close to the plinth, bit of a pain when you want to give the styli a quick brush off before cueing, anyone else had this experience with the 750 and 1200/1210 combo?

Can’t you just raise the arm rest a little?

I could if I fixed something under it, but as it is it just falls , it sits loosely in its holder, thinking about I'm not sure I have the tonearm exactly where it should be as with the arm rest raised the stylus cannot touch the record at the start of the LP - nearest the record edge as it hits the arm rest! Hopefully the pics will explain it better!

The arm rest should have a small grub screw to lock it, perhaps it is missing. The second photo looks better, just release the collar locking screw and turn the arm to the right a little and re tighten.

The fit of your Jelco looks to be very low as mounted on the Technics arm board, which is what I believe may be causing a fundamental problem.

Jelco (and others) produced a 10mm spacer ring (https://ammonite-audio.co.uk/product/spacer-ring-for-jelco-tonearm-collars-10mm-silver/) for this very purpose, ie: lifting the whole arm assembly into a more versatile position. Once the ring is fitted (may require longer securing screws), the arm / cartridge will end up higher leaving more space for you to give the stylus 'a quick brush' as required.

This also allows you to make the necessary adjustments to both the arm rest and the cueing device by using an appropriate allan key in the very small grub screws, as advised by Nigel.

If you fit a spacer ring, or make any of these adjustments, don't forget to re-check all cartridge specifications prior to playing a disc again.

The important thing is that the arm is at the correct height for optimal VTA, and that appears to be good. That cartridge is quite tall, so sitting close to the turntable's top plate when the arm is in its rest is not unusual. If it bothers you, just raise the arm rest clip, as advised by Nigel earlier.

This Jelco arm is already set at the correct height, so there is no need for any spacer to lift the mounting collar.

Thanks to all replies, as Hugo said the arm is set at the right height, raising it would make it too high to be parallel to the platter. The arm was misaligned, I have now moved it to the right a bit, and it is much better. Playing some 80s house now - Mr fingers and it is quite special, Direct drive really excels with beat driven music. I love this turntable! It came with an Ammonite armboard, which looks exactly the same as the original, which is great, luckily it was a Jelco fit!

Hi Nigel, I've had that arm about 3 years and I never noticed that! Set to the right height now, much better. I've still got the 401 by the way, yet to get it in a decent plinth though! Will do soon.
