Antique Sound Labs do some good EL84 integrated amps. Should find a good example for around £400 or so.
BTW Divergent Technologies are the distributor for Ref 3a and ASL!
Would also consider a 300b set such as audion, etc.
Can a kind mod please change the title to
wtd - valve amplifer.
Thank you

A single ended EL34 amp is not really enough for my Tannoys HPD315's which are around 89 dB.

I drove my Ref 3a de Capo's with my Art Audio Quintet valve amp. In triode mode (15w per channel) this EL34 push-pull amp drove the de Capo's beautifully
Sounds nice.
Sounds out of budget!

Much more powerful than my single ended EL34 amp.
My Rogers Cadet III, although low powered (well under 15W per channel) is push-pull and drives my Tannoy HPD315's quite well.

I had a Rogers Cadet 3 which I bought in Exchange and Mart for £12. It drove my Rogers LS3/5a's very well. It was better than my solid state Rogers A75 amp which I bought at the same time as the LS3/5a's (over 40 years ago).

Although a Rogers fan (Jim Rogers was a family friend) I never liked the Ravensbourne amp, and I think the A75 was a development of that.

Not sure about its antecedents but I was surprised at just how much better the Cadet was with LS3/5a's. The A75 MkII was more powerful but lacked the capacity of the Cadet to resolve finer detail. However, the Formica cabinet on the Cadet was a aesthetic crime of the highest order!

The Cadet III was a budget amp, probably hence the Formica, however, the amp gave a good sonic performance.
I was at the release of the LS3/5a by Rogers, they used the Ravensbourne amp, I did not like the sound. However, later I had a pair driven by a pair of Quad II amps, nothing to complain with there. I now have vintage Chartwell LS3/5as.

My A75 MkII cost £150 in 1977. I think the Cadet 3 was about the same price adjusting for inflation. I think the Formica was a "design choice" rather than a cost saving measure!
Apart from the Formica clad sleeve, the other aesthetic blemish was the solitary screw head on an otherwise 'peaches and cream' fascia.

The aesthetics never really bothered me, it was the sonic performance that was important to me.
The best amp that I have come across is a Williamson built by my uncle in the original Rogers factory in the early days of Rogers. It's probably a lot more ugly than a Cadet III, but boy, does it sound good.
A friend of mine had one, so I can vouch for the sonic performance.

I see that a "working" Cadet 3 was recently on eBay for £800!
I hope it wasn't the one I gave away when I went overseas in the 90's!!
