Good morning, Chris (runnerbean) from Aberystwyth, mid wales. Currently putting together my first real hifi at the age of 50! I picked up a Thorens 166 last week and later today I'm buying the early version of the JR149 speakers. Can't wait. I just need an amp.... I like the look of the Ion obelisk.
Thanks all

Hi Chris. Welcome to AOS.
The Thorens should be OK with a drop of oil, but your JR's will likely need new crossover capacitors if they've not been already done, not a difficult job though. If you're buying an original Obelisk, it would be best serviced before put into regular use. Of course, if it's a new one from Heed Audio, it'll be fine :).
Take a look around the site and join in any chat that interests you, it's a friendly place.
Enjoy the forum,
Geoff.

Thank you Geoff for the welcome. I’m seeing good reviews for the exposure xv amplifier. Budget around £300 so the Heed is out. The JRs have the original capacitors but I see you can get new ones from falcon.

You can, but perfectly good Alcap equivalents should be available from Cricklewood Electronics via ebay at a very sensible price.
Not wishing to offend Exposure fans, but I've tried the XV amp in my system and I would not buy one. Sixty quid's worth of second-hand Denon PMA-350SE sounded better to me and had more power (the Denon is a bargain favourite of mine :)).

JacHawk has a nice Marantz PM66 KIS for sale in Private Exhibitions. You'll have cash left over to buy some vinyl :)

Marantz looks nice but so does the Denon! Choices....
Welcome to AoS Christopher,
The Ion Obelisk has a good reputation, though I haven't heard one myself.
What are your tastes in music - what will you be pushing through your system once you have completed it?
Enjoy the Forum

Thanks Barry. An eclectic taste in music but jazz is near the top. Loving the forum.
