Any thoughts on these?

Thanks

I've had a pair with the Linton stands for over a month or so now. I got a deal on an ex demo pair (880 inc delivery).

Previous speakers where Monitor Audio SIlver 200 (2019 edition).

The Lintons handle the stage separation better than the MA, they have similar mids for vocals).. the top end is smoother than MA, as the MA is metal tweeter and Linton paper one.

Bass reproduction is handle way better than MA (bigger cabs).

They look lovely in walnut (and the better half also agrees).

I wish I'd found these earlier instead of waisting time with MA ones. I feel like I got a bargain really.

I've also had a pair of Rega RX3 previously (had to get rid due to placement issues). I'd put the linton's up against the Rega but the RX3 will beat the Lintons on vocals - especially female vocals (they're more expensive though).

So for me, a nice looking pair of speakers that appeals to the livingroom captain and myself, that do sound lovely and wide, they dont fatigue the ears either. I'd say they are very good value for money with the stands for sure.

Thanks for the reply.
Much appreciated.

Only now just noticed this thread.

My father had a pair pre-lockdown.

Nice speakers. Fairly relaxed presentation. Looks nice with the grills left on, imo.

Have fun.

I know most people aren't interested in measurements, but the ones on Stereophile look really good. Definitely worth a listen.

Peter Comeau though isn't it? I don't think he's ever done a bad speaker. I wouldn't want to use them close to a wall though, they look like they'll have a lot of bass.

Peter Cormeau is a highly regarded speaker designer, so should be good if he designed them.
Ignore the low frequency bump in the Stereophile measurements. He takes a nearfield measurement but doesn't correct for baffle diffraction.

I think they look great.

Chap over on another forum delighted with them.

Heard them in our local record shop.
The owner has a good ear...

The Denton 80th Anniversary models were/are excellent.
Shouldn’t have sold mine on...

For the stands maybe, the speakers being extra...

He was meaning the Dentons, not the Lintons. Dentons are £350 https://www.google.com/search?biw=1518&bih=739&tbm=shop&sxsrf=ALeKk02X9JhLeYYgJt8RBdVp1YsXn9MaNA%3A1598204 304672&ei=kKlCX6fMKMmP8gK-2Yf4AQ&q=WHARFEDALE+denton+HERITAGE+Speakers+Pair&oq=WHARFEDALE+denton+HERITAGE+Speakers+Pair&gs_lcp=Cgtwcm9kdWN0cy1jYxADUOrDAVjy2wFg1eUBaABwAHg AgAHHCIgB8BCSAQoxMS4wLjEuNy0xmAEAoAEBqgEPcHJvZHVjd HMtY2Mtd2l6wAEB&sclient=products-cc&ved=0ahUKEwin1O7-7rHrAhXJh1wKHb7sAR8Q4dUDCAk&uact=5#spd=10860387423657339447_0

I bought some Dentons new for £250 a while ago.
Can’t quite remember when.
They were a bargain at that price.
I made a small profit when I sold them.

I like the look of the whole range, it's proper old school. Don't like that suggestion of storing records in the stands though. Looks odd.

Check out the top of the line Airedale - £25K, weighs 100 kilos:

15" bass driver - Nice!

It's strange that there's no mention of it on the Wharfedale website.

Just one example, the frequency response is quoted as -3dB at certain frequencies, and then it says that it is -10dB at the same frequencies, it cannot be both -3 and -10 at a given frequency.

Perhaps they refer to different curves with different averaging.

A photo or two would have been good on the first post to give us non-owners an idea of what's being discussed.

Is that a 8" bass driver?

Macca
24-08-2020, 09:48
They say it is 200 mm which in English is just under 8 inches.

I don't know where or when this trend for quoting driver sizes in foreign units started but it's about time it stopped. It's really annoying.

KEF have been doing it for decades! B110 B200 etc.

That's just the designation though. If I asked you the size of a B200 you'd say 8 inches, you wouldn't say 200 millimetres.

lol! Car wheel and tyre sizes are fun, still generally in Inches, some Metros went Metric with metric tyres and wheels, only to be held on with Imperial wheel studs and nuts!

And I remember when high temperatures were expressed in Fahrenheit and low temperatures in Centigrade...everyone was happy with that, why did it change?

Napoleon lost. A long time ago. The metric system should never have outlasted him, especially not in this country.

But then we're talking about British heritage 'speakers that are made in China.

Where did it all go wrong?

I still have a pair of these, proper Wharfedales, designed in the days of genius Gilbert Briggs;
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50262378636_c8417ced28_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2jzvQ47)img_10 (https://flic.kr/p/2jzvQ47) by A60man (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41679262@N02/), on Flickr

Unfortunately, one is physically damaged, must try and repair it.

More steel in that chassis than in a modern car!

Only poor Wharfedale speaker I ever heard was the Delta 30. One of my brothers had them. They stopped working so I took them apart to find out why. Turned out that the push tags had slipped off, easy fix. My brother still thinks I am an electronics genius.

But they sounded crap and you could see why inside them. Nasty, cheapo mid bass run all the way up, just a cap on the tweeter which was a 10 pence job. No bracing on the chipboard cab. And they were £120 new back in 1987 when £120 was a lot of money. And of course the mags said they were great.

The Diamonds on the other hand were excellent and only a little bit more expensive. So were the Pacific range with the pod tweeters. And there was the Coleridge which was a cut above, although really expensive. But they don't ever seem to get mentioned by anyone as a serious speaker brand anymore.

Yes, that sounds wronng, unless they mean one measurement is in-room and one anechoic response, but even then that's a fairly wide discrepancy.
And if this is the case they should say so!

That would make sense. Should be explained though like you say.

Frankly, to me it reads like a mix-up! Usually it is common to quote frequency response which is where the +/-3dB limits come in, plus a usable frequency range where the 10dB applies. Howeve the figures should be different - I'd expect something like 35Hz-30kHz +/-3dB and 25Hz-45kHz +/-10dB, or something like that.

As to the Airedale Heritage not being on the UK website, I'm not sure if it still in production but I do know that it was really intended for the Far Eastern market.

Yes that's about right Adam, but there are other poorly sted things, and this leads me to believe that it was written by others than the designers.
