well, now the shocking weather of yesterday is behind us.. back to normality.. 13c overcast, with a forecast high of 16c

Some serious rain last night but dry so far this morning.
Baking hot here again today but there is some cloud this time. Going to be a lot cooler tomorrow so hopefully we'll get a thunderstorm when the weather breaks.

Here in the beautiful sunny south it's blooming perfect weather at 22c on Weymouth seafront. Lots of holidaymakers enjoying the beach and the donkeys are busy. :)

Warm but mainly overcast
Been a lovely day here, especially in the Berwyn mountains, which we've just come back from, after having gone out for the day and some lunch in a nice country pub:cool:

Puts me in mind of one of our local 'characters', he used to go round the shops in a summer dress even in winter, with a handbag, a crew cut and a week's stubble. Haven't thought about him in years.

Lol... Trouble is, that does fook all when there's next to no breeze, and all you're letting in is HOT air!:doh:
You need to circulate the air, to cool it, that's the problem and why if we lived down south, we'd defo invest in air-conditioning, otherwise any extended period of proper hot weather (and 3 days of 30C+ temps in that respect is plenty to drive you demented) for us would almost certainly result in no sleep.

We're considering getting a portable one even for up here! The problem is, when it's as hot as it's been recently, you *need* somewhere where you can 'escape'/retreat to from the heat...
When on holiday abroad, and it's 30/35C, your 'escape' is the hotel and your lovely cool air-conditioned room, or perhaps the pool, but back in the UK our houses simply aren't designed to be comfortable in very hot weather, so there's NO such 'escape'. Therefore, being so unbearably hot all day, then also at night, especially when it prevents sleep, just gets you down....:doh:

The problem with air-con is that it's not particularly healthy to have it on constantly, and that affects me too (causing mild flu-like symptoms), so it would need to be used in bursts - but how can you do that when you're asleep? If I had air-con on all night, I'd probably wake up ill....That's also one of the reasons why I dislike flying.
You say 21C is "perfect"... Is that inside or outside? Outside, that's fine, but DEFO NOT inside. Perfect for me inside, and read as comfortable, is 17/18C, which is what I need to ensure a good night's sleep, coupled with low humidity. It was 23C in our bedroom last night, so I slept (for a bit) outside in the backyard on the lounger, with next to fuck all on!:D
This is why I generally prefer the winter months, because our house is more suited to it, and when it's cold outside, it's a damn sight easier staying warm inside (as we have a lovely log burner to keep us warm), BUT ONLY as warm as *we* want to be - not what the sun outside dictates!
And for us, that makes things much more comfortable:)

As an aside, and to highlight the 'hot bedroom issue', last time we were in holiday in Austria, celebrating our wedding anniversary, it was -20C outside, and the suite we were in had adjustable underfloor heating, but even at its lowest setting, despite it being so cold outside, the room was still too warm and stuffy for our liking, probably because, even with the heating at its lowest setting, the temp was still over our comfortable ideal of 17/18C...
So we had to get the hotel staff to switch it off on our room completely, from their central control, otherwise I'd have been outside on the veranda!:eyebrows:

For the aircon unit just buy a digital timer and set it to come on in bursts over the course of the night.

One time in Las Vegas they upgraded me to a suite, which was great, but it was winter time and although it was hot in the day it's a high desert so the night can be cold. I was freezing my ass off in this huge suite so I set the aircon to warm and it broke down pretty much right away. Called reception and even though it was gone midnight they sent a couple of blokes up to fix it right away. I went down to the casino while they were doing it to pass the time playing the poker slots and won $300. Which was nice.

Last night it was still 24C inside, this morning it's still the same, with the windows/doors open it won't cool down as 24C outside. Hardly any wind last night or today. Tomorrow it should change with some strong NE winds off the sea. I slept ok, can't sleep if it's over 25C without a fan. Where I go on holiday, usually need Aircon as too hot and humid, can't sleep if it's 35C and humid. Although I could probably get used to it, some years ago I did it in Cambodia one trip.
I prefer around 18C for sleeping but with Aircon usually set it around 24C.

For me, that's a bloody warm room. I wouldn't want it that warm even in winter!
You make a very good point about physical activity, and also food/how you eat. From a child, I've always eaten proper, substantial meals (consisting of at least two courses of hearty home-cooked food), not 'glorified snacks' (beans and toast, sandwiches, chips, etc), as a lot of folks do in the UK. It's an Italian thing, but it ensures that your body is always 'correctly fuelled' and warm....
Remember that 'Ready Brek' advert, during the 70s, when the kid ate a bowl-full for breakfast, and then left for school with a (superimposed) red glow around him, to indicate that he was nice and toasty inside and ready to face the cold walk to school? Well, because I always eat well, that's me, ALL year round, which is why I get so bloody hot in summer!:D
Plus, it also helps if you've got some 'meat on your bones' (and I don't necessarily mean fat), which also provides some insulation against the cold, rather than the opposite.

Lol - didn't they have any proper heating you could've switched on? What happens in the hotel during winter? You shouldn't have to rely on air-con, blowing out hot air, to keep you warm!
The thing with me is that when it's cold outside I prefer the bedroom itself still to remain cool (so that the air is fresh, not stuffy, and my face and head stay cool while I'm sleeping). So to keep warm, I like to snuggle up under a thick duvet and/or blankets - and be nice and warm that way, rather than the actual room being warm.
That makes how warm I'm feeling much more controllable, and therefore more comfortable, as to cool down all I need to do is fling off the blankets or duvet, and the effect is instant. Do you see what I mean?:)

The ideal room temperature is based on research. Obviously as with most things there will be variations from person to person and some outliers.

I was probably extra cold due to the jet lag. And you can never get properly warm on the plane, it's always bloody freezing on those things.

Lol - no I never actually ATE Ready Brek, it was just the 'warm red glow' I was using to describe the point I was making, which was that hearty, home-cooked food provides your body with good fuel, so you're never really cold [almost like a type of thermostat], unless it *is* VERY cold. If you don't eat well, plus are on the skinny side, you tend to feel the cold more, IME...
Don't know about you, but I've always got warm hands (good circulation, I guess), often when most other people's are stone cold, so if you're starting from that sort of 'warm' position, I guess it's bound to mean that you'll suffer more when the weather's genuinely hot, as your 'ambient' body temperature is higher than average - if that makes sense?:)
It's also why I've always sweated like a bugger, even as a kid, as soon as it gets warm, even without moving around much, when often others don't break into a sweat at all. As soon as it's above, say, 25C, I just drip...:D

No idea, I've never experienced heat from air-conditioner. Ask Macca!

you just need a reversing valve and the aircon will work in reverse afaik

We usually have some Ready Brek knocking about, but don't have it very often. This morning I had Shreddies, but I had that with hot milk. Got to be quick with wheat-based cereals though if using hot milk - it swells like buggery and after five minutes it's only good for laying bricks with.

Although, I often replace the croissant with toast (as it's too fattening to have daily), using proper bread with a nice thick crust, which I get from the Polish shop, along with their really creamy butter (don't do spread). I also like nice jam or proper old-fashioned orange marmalade, from either Bonne Maman or Tiptree, which I have with a croissant or some toast.
We get our milk (full-fat type) delivered fresh from the dairy in old-fashioned bottles, every second morning, and it takes 3/4 of a pint to make the (very large) cappuccino I have, so I'm inadvertently getting the nutrients from it that way. Plus, I have a glass of fresh orange, pear or peach juice, lovely stuff from the Portuguese deli. I also often have some fresh fruit, maybe a peach or pear, or grapefruit.

Fruit, like any other food is down to personal taste. Pink grapefruit though, good ones, aren't are tart as the yellow variety. I've always been used to having some fruit in the morning (and throughout the day, all sorts), and love it, and of course it's very good for you. One of the reasons I'm such a healthy big bastard!;)

Well, let me reassure you that, aside from a small box at the door with some hand cleanser on it, the use of which is completely optional, and plastic shields around the checkouts, isolating the staff from you, it's the way it was, *but* MUCH quieter!!
At least round here it is... No queues to get in and hardly any bugger inside, probably 'cos lots of the oldies are too scared to go out and/or many customers have now switched to online. Honestly, it's great - isles virtually to yourself, no queues at MANNED checkouts (the only ones I'd use, for reasons we've discussed before), and just overall much more calm and relaxing - honestly!
Pop in for a nosey yourself and see... As for Lidl. trust me, you've got it all wrong. Either that, or the one near you is crap. Knowing me, do you honestly think I'd do 80% of my shopping in Lidl if there wasn't anything worth buying or the stuff was crap?
Their fresh bread and pastries section, at least in the Wrexham branches, is first class and cheap as chips, trust me... And yes, they do those apple thingies you like! No idea what you mean about the tinned fish - haven't seen that, but the quality of their 'Specially Selected' range of fresh meat is excellent, often Aberdeen Angus, rump, sirloin or fillet, and make great steaks.
And all sorts o other stuff.... You really should revisit it with a fresh mind, and if you do have a PROPER look round, up and down the aisles, not just a quick glance.
Yeah defo give the stall in the market a go - if they make the croissants themselves, to a classic French recipe, I can't see them being too shabby!:)

Lol... Well, I cope fine when I'm in Italy, when I've got access to an air-conditioned hotel, or when in our family villa (big, open-plan rooms with downstairs bedrooms), shutters on the windows (which are closed all day during the summer) and marble floors (no carpets), so that rooms are kept lovely and cool, no matter how hot it is outside!:ner:
Here, it's a different matter. Plus, for some reason it feels like a different type of heat, kind of more oppressive, perhaps because of the humidity. Maybe because where I go in Italy, you're right up in the mountains, so the air is fresher... Dunno it just feels different.. So I cope ok over there, but not here, when it gets up to 30C and over!

flahavans irish oats are good. i personally add a bit of theirs to pinhead near the end for texture.. i add cream, brown sugar and fruit to it..its called farmers luxury porridge as he was only one likely to have cream and could afford it. its a bit similar to rice

Currently 32C and just unbearably hot... Opened the car door and it *literally* felt I'd just opened the oven door in the kitchen. It was 35C in there:rolleyes: Good job there was air-con! Otherwise, there's no way I could've driven it to the shops...

34 today and been same hot, humid, sticky tropical heat. Been like it for almost a week now plus hot sticky nights on end.
Working from home has been hard in this heat and humidity, like working in a sauna. Difficult to be productive when you feel sapped of energy and I've usually got tons of that.
We're all more than ready for a drop in temp and some rain to clear the air, here in my household, that's for sure. When there's been no respite, you want and need an ease :rolleyes:

Amusingly, I went out last night to check the hot tub chemicals and found that the water temperature on the display was half a degree hotter than its set point.
Never seen that before!

Well it's just done that here now with a MASSIVE thunderstorm!!:eek: Like the biggest drum kit you've ever heard was fixed to the sky - with the rain lashing down! And it's SO much cooler now... Down from 32C this afternoon, to 20C!!!!
THANK CHRIST - I can BREATHE AGAIN....!!:yay::yay::yay: We've got the backdoor wide open, along with the windows in the lounge, and sitting in the middle, allowing the lovely, refreshing cool breeze, to get into all the (naked) crevices:eyebrows:
And..... As a BERTIE BONUS, I might even get some sleep tonight!!!! :dance::dance:

We eat dinner outside, and with all the widows open plus the use of a couple of fans the house is comfortably cool with a refreshing breeze passing through.
Not sure what could ever be "comfortably cool" or "refreshing" about 34C?:eek:

Dunno how you do it.... I was sweltering in nothing but a pair of shorts!! I'd have been in hospital with heat exhaustion, if I'd had a collar and tie on... In fact, I think the last time I had something like that on was (very grudgingly) at my mum's funeral, 6 years ago!

House hunting today, viewed a nice detached bungalow in Upminster. I liked it but not sure Madame was keen.
When we got back her and her daughter simultaneously stripped down to their undies & they were wearing matching black lacy ensembles. Didn't know where to look ;)

Proper downpour just started. That'll clear the air!
Another big thunderstorm here last night with torrential rain this time. Constant flashes of lightning. Was stood in the porch watching it and some bloke walked past, completely soaked. A minute later some bird walks past with an umbrella up! Talk about living dangerously. This was about 1030 pm, god knows where they were going in that weather at that time of night.
2249 get an automated call from the Environment Agency. River Trent flood warning! - take immediate action! I did, I went to bed.

Pretty nice morning here now after the CRAZY thunderstorms last night, which lasted for nearly two hours, creating a bonkers sound and light show!!:eek:
The garden's had a damn good soaking for sure! But MUCH fresher now (for the moment anyway, as it's set to get warmer later), currently 22C. Still a pretty muggy, stuffy night in the house though (after I had to shut the doors to keep the cats in), as is the norm after the walls have been baking in 30C+ heat all day, but it'll cool down in a couple of days, as long as the temps don't get above 25C.
Just enjoying my morning cappuccino and croissant, outside in the pleasant sunshine:cool:

Still no rain in this area. Maybe tonight or tomorrow. Water butts nearly empty, in fact I cleaned one the other day, no rain for the last 19 days. Feels a bit fresher today but is getting hot again, maybe 27C soon.
Hot and sunny here - not as humid, so I will have a go at cutting the grass (well, dried out remains of grass and daisies )
Just put some washing out so probably my turn for the thunder storms

Half the sky to the south has gone very dark and there are distant rumbles of thunder. It all looks headed this way, so maybe it'll cool things down. It's been getting hot.

Had a gentle smattering of rain about an hour ago and it’s gone very dark but that’s about it so far.
Hope it does come, as I’m intending to give the Rangey a wash at the weekend and a torrential downpour does a great job as a handy pre-wash!

Cool and fresh this morning up to about 1100, then sun came out and now it's starting to get hot again.
Supposed to be a lot cooler tomorrow with 50% chance of rain in the morning.
Still not needed my new hat, the only rain we've had in last month has been late at night. Amazing really as I bought it because every time I stepped out the house it started to rain.

Nothing until one or two in the morning (I think, something woke me) then very heavy.
Lots of flashes/rumbles out towards the east at about 22.00 (dog kept on going out to chase around the garden and bark at the thunder) - according to radar there was a severe storm at sea a few miles out from Harwich around 22.00 when I was seeing the flashes. Which ties in with my wife working out that the storm was 16 miles away.
I think the storm petered out a bit when it came up the Stour towards Manningtree.
Getting clearer now - I think we may have a sunny evening for a few beers on the patio:)
poor again at about 13c. cloudy and high humidity.. good ol' scottish weather; never lets you down :eyebrows:

Lol - you're lucky! We've had it here for the best part of a fortnight [outdoor temps constantly above 25C - often over 30C], so I can count on one hand how many full night's sleep I've had during that time:rolleyes:
So this rain, and the much lower temps. is a Godsend! Just been out shopping to Sainsburys, and loving feeling the warm, refreshing summer rain on my skin, as I walked from the carpark to the store... Aye, the simple pleasures in life are often the best!:exactly:

Chilly wind, really - are you up high where you are? There's virtually no wind here, and what there is feels warm, a bit like when you've got the air blower in the car pointing at your face at 16/17C...:)

lol, not sure I'd want to put hand grenades in them. I think the original idea was to put camouflage in them but I've seen fishermen with 'fishing stuff' in them so I suppose they are multi-purpose.

Not as imminent as I thought it was - end of August it is, so 11 more days of work incl. next Saturday. Undecided where to go/what to do. Latest idea is to buy van, and before kitting it out for work use it as a camper van (no amenities inside, basically a tin tent). Then go visit mates in Ayr for a couple of days, and go round the highlands a bit. Bit more fuel costs using van, but at least Erskine bridge no longer has tolls - yay! should save us a fiver.

No Jock bridges or tunnels have tolls, not for a long time now.

A little bit of rain yesterday evening around 4mm, thunderstorms around but went further north. Not much rain forecast here, maybe a bit Wednesday night.
Had my first proper full night's sleep last night (a nice 9 hours) for ages!!:carrot:
Simply because the temp in the house has fallen below (just) 20C for the first time in I don't know how long... Currently 18C and raining - lovely!:D
