View Full Version : Integrated amp/phono query
Looking for a wee bit of advice if possible? I’m using a Linn AV5103 as a preamp for an active biamped system - 2 LK100 amps with Keilidh Speakers. CD source (Karik and currently Marantz 6000OSE).
The AV5103 doesn’t have a phono stage, however I have a Majik1 integrated amp which I used previously in this set up and I wonder if the mm phono stage could be utilised for my turntable? I’ve tried various analogue outs from the Majik to the AV5103 but I cannot seem to connect to the phono stage in the Majik. Maybe it isn’t possible. I’ll obviously look into getting a phono stage If this isn’t possible. I did have a Cambridge audio one but have sold that on as I preferred the sound from the Majik. Thanks.

Have you tried using the tape output on the Majik? Or the headphone output?
yeah if its got a tape out you will be able to
Thank you. I did try the tape out but there was no sound. I suspect user error at my end! I will have a look later. The AV5103 is quite fiddly to set up but I finally worked it all out last night!

I’m struggling to get this working. Connected the t/t to the tape 1 in connect on the Majik integrated. I’ve then run the cable from the Tape 1 out on the Majik to the analogue connector 1 on the 5103. I’ve assigned the 5103 connector to ‘tape’ but there’s no signal. Any ideas folks?

The turntable will need to be connected to the correct input (usually Phono) as the gain on a normal line level input is too low.
If this is the correct rear image of your Majik, then connect the TT to the Phono input, then connect the Tape 1 Out to the chosen input on the AV5103.
Ensure Phono is selected as the source on the Majik. It should output the TT without problem then.

The TT should connect to the phono input on the Majik then run a cable from the 'tape out' on the Majik to the analogue connector on the 5103
As you would do if you were taping a vinyl record and the 5103 was the tape deck.
I can't see any reason why that would not work unless one or the other unit is faulty or there is a fault with the cable(s).

Cheers Filterlab - that’s helpful. I think it was the configuration at the 5103 end that was not quite correct - settings need tweaked. The set up menu on the 5103 takes a bit of learning, esp when just using the display on the amp rather than the more detailed one when it is hooked up to a screen. Thanks again.

Welcome mate. AV devices can often get a bit tricky, I had a Marantz something or other AV thing a few years ago, and the menus ranged from ‘absurd’ to ‘bewildering’. Got there in the end. 😅
