View Full Version : What do you use in between your speakers and their stands ?

The reason I ask is because my latest speakers appear to have been designed to sit directly on the stands , surely this can’t be good ?
My current ones ( electrocompaniet qubes ) have a solid copper plate ( about 8mm deep ) that the speakers sit on , I’m thinking of fitting either black tac or gel pads .

Welcome matey.

They give good protection to the base of the speaker, plus a bit of decoupling (but not too much). 👍🏻

In the past I've used rubbery (or felt if they've only got those) stick on feet from the pound shop [emoji33]

You get about 60-80 of various sizes in a packet. [emoji16]

Doesn’t it seem odd that a manufacturer would sell their speakers with the matching stands and not provide any kind of isolation item

I use Black Tac at the moment. I did try some Vibrapods but thought they sounded worse and there was more vibration if you felt the base of the stands, not very secure either, so I sent them back for a refund. If I get new stands they will have Custom Design Isolation Pads anyway, I will try them.

I don't like putting them directly onto the stands.

Nice looking speakers.

Thanks Ray , I have used black too on many an occasion until on one occasion it pulled the veneer off on some Kef 103’s , I guess it won’t damage these though

Yes I've heard that but I have used it on my speakers for 7 years without any problem, just replaced as I tried the vibrapods which did not work for me. Isopucks I think will be good but they are pretty expensive.

Those Hudsons look quite good, you may get away withe the 0.75 size, which are much cheaper: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07RBN6CD8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_LfIT2WTDd3a6L?th=1

Blue Tac

Haven't thought about it all that much, I don't remember doing a with/without hearing test either, though I might have done.

Ikea Bamboo butchers block, not pretty to look at , but pretty effective sound wise me thinks. These are used as equipment support of course.
My stands are metal and they move around on castors, so ugly meets ugly I suppose !

I cut some of this stuff

https://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00eAzadCkrnqug/Shock-Absorbing-Noise-Reduction-Rubber-Flooring-Crossfit-Rubber-Gym-Flooring.jpg

https://www.amazon.com/Hefty-Mat-Iterlocking-gymnasium-19-7×19-7×3-1/dp/B074H5J87C

easily found in all hardware stores, made of recycled plastic (tyres or something like that), usually recommended to put underneath your white goods (washing machine, dryer).
It works a treat, as good as blutak as it bounds the stand and the speaker base, but without the mess after.

I ordered two pieces of some sort of rubber sandwich made by a firm called Diversitech - each piece is 6x6", so I'm going to cut each into 4, giving me eight 3" squares, for £12. After waiting over a week for delivery I checked what the delay was, and found they were in the basket but not purchased  So still waiting.

The minimum order was about 5m so I've got a big roll of it in the garage. Could probably get about 10,000 small feet off it, or 100+ speaker sized rectangles [emoji38]

We cut some pieces from a door mat (black rubber base, grey fabric top) and flipped them. That’s for the active monitors at the computer desk. I’m planning on trying some squash balls halved for my Tannoy Eatons.

That sounds like it would work if the goal was simply isolation, but the design of my speakers are such that bass is augmented by ports in the base, and these ports need to 'see' some space below them, or it's bye bye bass :( Rubber carpet underlay would squash too much as the speakers are almost 80lbs each. Hence the Diversitech approach. It's pretty hard stuff.

On another forum I saw someone was use ice hockey pucks. They thought they worked well being made of a composite, they isolated without being squashed. I think it was a dozen for £14 from Amazon. Worth a try.

Yes around £176 which to me is pretty expensive compared to many other products. The Hudsons are only about £15. Black Tack is about £5.

How stable are speakers on Isopucks, are they stuck down or just resting on top?

You could get a set of 8 of Isopucks Minis, depending on the weight of your speakers (4 is for upto 11kg), these are around £84, I did bid on some on used ones ebay but the price was too high.

the isopucks are very stable indeed , when you have spent well over 4000 on a pair of speakers like i have , the last thing i want is blu tac pulling off the veneer [ which is common] to save 176 !!! thats cheap compared to some stuff

they grip the speakers and keep them from being pushed off . got some mini`s but they are a bit feeble imho , cerianly not suitable under speakers unless as light as a feather

i use them under amps too

Fair enough but we don't all have £4k speakers. My speakers are only 9kgs each.

Do they have some suction to hold the speakers?

hifinutt
17-07-2020, 15:49
even so , i wouldn`t use blu tac on wood veneer speakers , i tried to get some speakers off a stand recently that i had used blu tac ... they were pretty well stuck

they don`t have suction but they have a rubber type top that `grips`

I have some expensive HRS feet ( American ) which work super under amps etc, improving the sound no end, but underneath speaks slightly preferred the flat bamboo board.

I have recently tried some carpet underlay under my AE2's speakers and under the stands. Convinced myself that this has tamed the bass bloom that occurred on occasions.
