What a day yesterday , Left home at 04.00 and drove up to Liverpool

Going by other similar looking turntables you got a right bargain mate. If I were to have my kit in the house I would make a stand like that for my DP80.

The plinth that everything sits on must weigh 50lbs again :eek: you will notice 3 small depresions and 1 large one these are for the next set of puck / feet units and the main drive unit , done so everything lines up as needed

I can only thank Paul for allowing me to be the next custodian of this superb TT ( Other also wanted to buy this ) , It is a stunning thing , Hopefully it will be with me for some time to come , :eyebrows:

Left the TT assembly to settle , squash the carpet and underlay , Then spent best part of 1 hour leveling it up , Pretty much spot on now
Have removed the armboard ready for my Origin Live Encounter MK3c to be fitted

The TT has a speed control box with a rotory dial

10 o'clock is standby

12 o'clock is on 33.3 RPM

2 o'clock is 45 RPM

Also the unit has 2 pot's for speed adjustment

Also has a seperat box used for on / off of platter rotation

Now this is where it gets clever , The unit has a magnetic driven plater , It's fully decoupled from the drive unit , The drive ( Lower unit ) has 3 motors ( Belt drive ) set at 120 degree's apart

When you look between the drive unit and upper platter you can see a 20 thou air gap , The magnets in the lower drive grip the upper unit and turn the platter

It's quite novel to see this in action , switch it on and the lower drive unit starts to turn , Then a second or so later the upper platter picks up speed , When you switch it off the same happens as they stop rotating at different time's

Will try at a later date to do a video of this happening

That's all for now , Need to get the arm and cart on :)

When I had one (my first deck), I disabled the arm return mechanism, and would cue the arm by hand.

I thought the main bearing of the SP25 was pretty good: mine would take ages to slow down to a standstill once switched off and the idler wheel disengaged. But obviously not in the same league as that of Al's splendid new TT.

Yes , A single belt that runs around 3 spiral pully's returning from around the main centre pulley , I have never seen a system like it , These drive the lower platter , Then a magnetic coupling that rotates the main top platter , Quite unique to me

I needed to get a 1 1/4" box spanner so I could tighten the tone arm nut as the nut is up inside the arm mounting point , collected one today from toolstation ( Marco spends time there as he is a tool :ner: )

Also have the use of a SMARTractor Precision Alignment Tool setup unit ( Thanks mikeyb :) )

I managed to snap the arm earth cable :doh: as the horseshoe clip got caught :( need to solder that back together

Once the arm is fitted , Put the Shelter 5000 cart on and do the setup then MAYBE then its time to spins a test LP

The Ocellia calliope grandis signature 21 are very serious bits of kit be them empty boxes or not, they are a very finely and carefully tuned boxes! To quote from the review "Things were huge, juicy, immediate, palpable and micro resolution in the tone domain was plain intense. Whatever reviewer words du jour you'd like to throw at the experience, do. Having romanced various wideband drivers, these PHYs to me seem to operate in a different league than any Lowther, Fostex, Supravox, Eminence or Jordan I've heard thus far. Naturally, folks familiar with Western Electrics or Altecs will have a more suitable context. Back on track re my new record player

I now have a 1 1/4" box spanner that is miles to long , I now need to get the angle grinder out with a cutting disc fitted and shorten it , Then onto the piler drill and drill 2 holes for the bar that goes through it , Solder the eart cable , Fit the arm and set the length with the protractor , Then the cart , Tomorrow is the day for all this , I an NOT doing anything else :nono:

It gets worse , The 1 1/4" box spanner is not 1 1/4" as the arm nut would not go in :steam:

I ended up having to linish the 6 corners of the nut , These box spanners are squashed into shape from a round tube , This results in the inside not quite what you want , Anyway now the nut fits , I have also shortened the box spanner as it was to long ,
Time for a coffee then back at it :)

I have just looked at the OL website and I can’t find any specifics on the geometry - certainly no mention of Lofgren or Baerwald

Agreed, but they do describe the arm geometry parameters: effective arm length, overhang and offset angle. From these you can see if the arm is designed to follow any of the three recognised arm geometries to minimise tracking error: Baerwald, Loefgren or Stevenson.

I have tried several setups all failed as the cart was way to far forward
The only one that came very near is UNI DIN

Set to that , arm now installed , VTA set hopefully :scratch:
Just need to remove a spacer washer from the arm lift as the arm does not touch the record , Fitted a new lift as the old one would not stay up , when you let the lever go the arm lowered again .
Now out of time for today as its bed time :)

FINGERS CROSSED tomorrow should be the day , very close now to hearing the first record :D

Getting nowhere trying to fine tune the arm, Phoned Origin Live Mark Baker and asked how do I know the length on my

Encounter MK3c , slight pause , I asked how do I measure the overall length ? or the lenght from the centre of the pivot point ? or from the point where the arm exits the mounting point ? , anothe pause , then Use the protractor that came with the arm , Me " I dont have it , Reply , buy one of our web site , :doh:
Me I am trying to use a smartractor unit and can only get it set using UNI-DIN , no reply :(

Bit more fine tuning oh hold on head scratching to do yet :)

If it were 12", it would be pretty obvious, which leaves 10", 9.5", 9".

Look for:

It all depends on whether it's effective length is 9", 9.5" or 10", which is what he's wanting to know. All the information needed is there in the photo shots. It's only tonearm geometry. It's hardly quantum physics.

In all probability, it'll be the standard 9.5".

Lot to be said for getting a straightforward "plug and play" deck, the BSR MP60 springs to mind. Mine even had a double sided stylus, you could flip between LPs and 78s. What more could you want? :) And the square arm tube was super cool.

I can now confirm the arm is now set up spot boll-k on , 2 Hours of arm off arm back in , tweek here tweek there its done .

I must extend thanks to MIKE Mikeyb for the very generous use of his Smartractor , Without this it would be imposible to get the arm / cart set to what I now see as 99.9% accurate , THANKS MIKE , your a dimond geezer :D

How does it sound now , Well its a long time since I have had the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and have that tingly feeling down my spine , It now sound awesome ( Not a word I use often ) it's bloody amazing :eek:

I have Floyd wish you were her playing , Close my eyes and Gillmore is in the room up front playing lead guitar :eek:

The Bass rifts are amazing as is the keyboard playing

My OH my this blows all my previous attempat into the weeds , I though my Mike new 1210 was good but this is so many levels better

Well that is great news, I am really pleased for you:), so now you can stop playing with amps now and just plug in the best of your vast selection of speakers until you find the ones that work best.

Then sell all the others and possibly think about a super duper pair of speakers, now lets see, Wilson Benesch - Cardinal or Eminence, Rockport, top end Tannoys, or maybe Ocellia.:D Best check what weight your floor can take with some of those.:eek:

Yes - to stop leaving greasy finger prints all over that lovely polished chrome!

My CD player came with a similar set of white gloves (with anti-slip grips on the palm side, so as not to drop the heavy item), to prevent leaving finger marks on the brushed satin black finish of the player.

Anyway the white gloves will go nicely with your top hat and tails when you are out on the town. ;)

Hi Al, is it actually chrome or has the chrome been coated with a protective clear varnish?

If it is chrome then I would go for a very good chrome cleaner that was not highly abrasive, I used to use this on a Morgan sports car, it is very easy to use and leaves a protective coating, put if on thinly and polish of with a clean microfibre cloth. https://www.meguiars.co.uk/shop/nxt-metal-polysh I would personally avoid a spray as it will go everywhere and could be problematic around the other gear.

Despite many saying Solvol Autosol is good, I don't like it because it contains coarse abrasives. This also applies to Simonize chrome cleaner, and most metal cleaners.

Chrome plating is porous, and this is indicated by the spots on corroded surfaces.

If the Chrome is good which it probably is I would use Silvo, which is very, very, finely abrasive, and then finish with a polymer coat like Simonize Diamond Wax, (polymer coat), which protects, and allows easy wiping, (one hell of a finish after these two, just done my titanium bike with these.)

Yes - I should have put the second clause in quotes. But regular Coke can be used as a metal cleaner.

Yes, Simonize wax is good but its builds up and is hard work. In particular it has the disadvantage of supporting organic life and becomes mouldy, witness my white wood with black mould.
