WARNING.
Despite agreeing to sell the VT213s to me AND sending me his PayPal address on pfm last night, when I sent the money this morning he tells me he sold them to someone else on AoS! Apparently not paying instantly is not good enough, especially as they are "in demand".
Very poor.
Which set of VT213s were you after?
I understand your frustration and annoyance. The honourable thing would have been for the seller (regardless of which forum he advertised them on) to mark them as "sold subject to payment".

The honourable thing would have been for the seller (regardless of which forum he advertised them on) to mark them as "sold subject to payment".Although the buyer might not have checked the thread once they had the PayPal address. I'd never let this happen, the only time I would give out my PayPal address to a second buyer would be after sending a message to the first buyer saying that they've taken too long and do it by the end of the day if they still want it. They'd have 8 hours (daytime) grace as a minimum.

The usual protocol is as soon as a buyer has expressed an intention to buy (and confirm by sending a PM), the seller should send the buyer his PayPal address by PM, and then mark the sale item as "sold subject to payment". How much time the seller gives the buyer to complete the transaction obviously varies, but as a buyer I would try to pay by PayPal F&F as soon as I received the PP address, and then inform the buyer (also by PM) that I had done so.
If a seller is using more than one site to advertise (i.e. more than one forum), then it is possible that two independent buyers (looking at separate fora) may express an intention to buy at exactly the same time. Unlikely, but possible and I don't know how such a situation would be resolved.
i thought i'd let this one go as a foreign buyer (there's obviously less and less love for us these days) but it does seem as if my experience with the seller might serve a purpose. on another site this transpired:
"I'd very much like the Brimars. I'm based in Estonia (EU) so postage extra obviously."
"Hi eskiil, if you are interested i'll get a price for postage?"
"thank you, I'm very interested"
....more than 24h later...
"this is just to check if you've established the postage for Estonia? and how would you like to be paid?"
"Hi, sorry but i sold the locally"
obviously it's up to the seller to decide who s/he prefers to deal with in the end, but some *ethos* would surely not go amiss.

Sorry, but i think most people given the opportunity to sell locally or risk sending overseas would pick the former.

Well I bought the 'unused' Ken Rads. Unfortunately, they proved to be unusable producing significant amounts of hum and hiss and were extremely microphonic.
I asked Leo if they had been recently purchased and whether the seller had offered any guarantees which might enable him to get a full or partial refund. Leo advised that he'd had them for a few years but had just never got round to trying them...
I have to acknowledge that I knew they were listed as being unused, however, under the circumstances and mindful of the general spirit of cameraderie that normally exists on this forum, I know that if I had been the seller I would have wanted to offer a partial refund to lessen the disappointment. As it happens it was £60 down the drain.

I would have offered a full refund with apologies. Might have asked you to return them just in case they were incompatible with your amp though (highly unlikely).
id be asking for a refund personally!

Not quite the full story
Hi Leo,
Thanks. I thought that might be the case. If you were prepared to include delivery in your asking price I would be happy to accept the small risk and give them a go. I could pay by whatever means suits you best.

Yes I did ask a number of questions prior to deciding to make the purchase and based on the information now set out in the above transcript I decided to take the risk and purchase them. Leo did agree to include delivery in the £60 purchase price and so I thought the risk was likely to be fairly low.
Having got them and given them a try it was immediately evident that I had underestimated the risk and that, as stated above, they were unusable.
I have no argument with any of that and as also stated above, I consciously made a decision to buy on the basis that Leo knew little about them. I'm not sure, however, that any of that alters the fact that having purchased a pair of valves from a fellow AOS'er that subsequently proved to be unusable that a slightly more measured response might have been made in recognition of the £60 I'd paid.

Out of curiosity I looked at lazyscott's post history (72 posts) and apart from the first few in 2009 they appear to be ALL in the classifieds! So not much interaction with the other members here. I know I rarely post here now apart from the classifieds, but I do give stuff away and PM people to offer help, so I understand the "ethos" of the forum.

To me untested means you take the risk of wasting your time by trying something out that may not work and having to return it for a refund. It doesn't mean if it doesn't work you've lost your money, unless it states no returns or bought at buyer's risk.
my 2 cents is if you accept the risk that they are untested then what ever the outcome you swallow it.you are not buying from a shop so the 14 days refund or asking for a refund does not apply.buyer beware means just that. and for good reason.

I can see that applying on gumtree but to me I expect this forum to have a stronger ethic than caveat emptor on the classifieds.

In essence, it was exactly that same strict interpretation of where I found myself that originally caused me to just let the matter lie.
It was only in reading some of the comments as this thread unravelled that I felt there were certain behaviours and responses of the seller that left much to be desired and which then prompted me to add my own experience. I suppose this thread simply demonstrates that we all have different interpretations and expectations of how fellow forum members should or might behave when it comes to the selling or purchasing of equipment.

Many things have been said so I’ve locked the thread now. Please do bear in mind that the behaviour of a single user is not indicative of the forum as a whole.
Good, solid members on here.
