As ever, it's a matter of context; these things aren't 'black or white'.
The issue of reasonable consent must be considered, plus I'd contend that there's a big difference between the relationship you're stating with JP, between himself, at 26, and a 15-year old girl, and that of, say, Epstein as a 67-year old man (before he 'died') and any 'relationships' he'd had with procured minors!

Must be quite a drop in quality of life for Ghislane. But besides the fact she sounded like a total spoilt bitch, I don't believe her crimes were that serious, I'm not even sure Epsteins crimes were either. This is only what I've read in the papers, but as far as I can gather, he got post pubescent girls to give him massages, and a few of the older ones, like 16 or 17 to perform sexual acts. Doesn't sound to me like anyone was forced, and of course the justice of this matter is completely skewered by the financial rewards of exagerating your pain and apparent innocence.

Seems like she recruited teenagers who were working as waitresses at various luxury resorts and promised them a world where they would mix with influential people and make connections when in reality they would just become concubines.
I suppose if you are from Florida and end up at Epstein's house in New York at 17 years old you can walk out but where do you go? You've not even got the money for the train home.
Some of the witnesses had already had a few million each from victim funds and prior out of court settlements of civil suits but they still chose to testify in this case, does that make them more credible?
Also I doubt Epstein would have topped himself if he thought he was completely innocent, likewise Maxwell wouldn't have spent six months on the lam if she thought there was no case to answer.

This case is nothing compared to the Pakistani grooming scandal in Rotherham, those girls were threatened with violence, given drugs, and full intercourse took place. Where's the perspective? How long a sentence will Maxwell receive? I think the almost 2 years she has been incarcerated already sounds like too much for these rather petty sounding crimes. I think Weinstein also didn't get a fair hearing because of the way in which criminal sentencing these days seems to be so easily swayed by public opinion. And the apparent victims in his case were adult women too feeble to leave the room!
I think there's an element of truth in what you are saying. Especially with the Weinstein affair. But he behaved badly and abused his position of power, so did Maxwell and Epstein, so seems reasonable to me that they should receive some sort of punishment for that.
Obviously 80 years in prison which is what Maxwell could get is ridiculously out of proportion to the crime.

I get the impression that sentencing in the US can be quite arbitrary, and varies a lot from the deep south to the metropolitan North. There is a weird thing in the Maxwell case that it is a 'federal' crime, that is it occurred across several states, this is where the charge of trafficking comes from in this case, so this makes it more serious, can someone enlighten me? According to today's Times, Maxwell's best chance is to cooperate and give up some of the other so called abusers, for a more lenient sentence, there must be some nervous big wigs in America at the moment, not to mention our Andy! I'd be stunned if he was prosecuted, but of course the British state would never hand him over. Assange on the other hand...........
I think she will appeal rather than squeal. She would need to help get them evidence, her word alone would not be enough.
