Something that annoys the hell out of me is the inapproprate use of the word loose instead of lose.
Frequently, someone looses something. By the context of the words used it is apparent that what is actually meant is that someone has managed to lose something. So someone loses something.
Losing something becomes looseing something.
It is something that commonly occurs on internet forums - this place is no different to the other places I frequent in that respect.
How on earth did this practise start, and does anyone else find it very irritating ?

I also find it not irritating but mildly amusing. I believe the trend was started by none other than TonyL on Pink Fish.
Loose is an adjective meaning the opposite of tight. Loose-fitting clothing, a screw loose or even a loose woman.
The verb to lose is the opposite of find. It is an irregular verb so in the simple past and as a past participle it is lost. As a noun iit is a loss and the adjective lossy or lossless has come into use in recent years.

Tis to be expected with a culture of misusing English where a fair number of persons on the web (and in life) exercise creative spelling/use. Prime examples being texting abbreviations and popular culture phrases. It is not entirely the province of the young either.
You know what they mean so let it pass, you will not change it.

Can't say I've noticed that one particularly but what I have been noticing for some time is the use of 'then' instead of 'than'.
eg......'they use the wrong word rather then the right one'
- Usually this comes from our American friends (not so much here on AoS, it has to be said).
Apart from that, I'm actually frequently amazed at the sheer number of folks who can barely string 2 words written together without making a complete mess of it. I don't judge them at all, but, rather, I do despair that our great & glorious leaders, some of whom whose avowed purpose in life was 'education, education, education' got us to this state.
And just thing about the problem of a foreign member on the forum (me for example).
Sometimes you are use words that I can not translate.Even with translator and they are not in the dictionary too.The only thing I left is to read a few times and if I'm lucky (smart enough;which I'm not :)) realize what the writer wanted to say.:doh:

On a slightly different note, the one that gets me on here is the misspelling of Stan's DAC: the Caiman.
The correct spelling of 'Caiman' is everywhere on AOS, yet some people still insist on putting a 'e' in it, making it 'Caimen'....... :rolleyes:
I've even seen people start a thread about the Caiman, spelling it correctly to start with, and then the same person spelling it as 'Caimen' later in the same thread!! :doh:
Wossat muppetry all about then? Laziness or stupidity? ;)

The problim with coments like that is that it makes yoo look like an eleetist pedunt.
Sum peeple carnt spell becos thay ar disabeld - dislecksic or summink.
Personly, I hate the way sum peeple misyoose apostrofees.
Definitly down to bad ejucashun.
I blame the guvvermint.
Bad spelling and gramer should be punisht with a fine or prison or a good kickin or summat.

PS My wife is dyslexic - she reckons the person who first coined the term was a true sadist - even people who don't suffer from it struggle to spell it correctly.
Anyway, I'm off to buy some apple's, pear's and spud's.

That's another one that bemuses - which version does one use of there/their/they're and how frequently the wrong one appears.
I've made the effort to ensure that my son knows the differences, and when each version is appropriate.
That said, it's a difficult job to stop him using non words like "worser". :doh:

I'm often hopeless at spelling, so I use it regularly. :)
It won't correct instances of inserting the 'wrong' word though... it'll just let you know if you've misspelled the 'wrong' word! :rolleyes:
Oh yes... the one that bugs me is 'sence' instead of 'sense'... C'mon people! :doh:

You're particular about your amps being tidier than tidy, inside and out, I'm particular about the misspelling of lose and its' variants.:lolsign:
All these mistooks wash over me on an internet forum, but I am terrible for picking people up on it in real life. I've REALLY upset my wife on more than one occasion for correcting her (I correct her all the time, she only gets upset rarely! :lol:) If I get or see a business letter with basic grammar or spelling mistakes... :steam: but here, it doesn't really bother me too much. The one that I can be very guilty of is getting where and were muddled up, and the one that REALLY annoys me is people who use are instead of our... :steam::steam::steam:
Yes, getting one's words mixed up can be a real bind.
Only this morning, I meant to ask my wife to pass the cornflakes, but for some reason it came out as 'You've ruined my life you callous bitch'.
