View Full Version : Killer on the loose in Northumberland
Today, I switched on the news to discover that my eldest son's school was in 'lockdown' due to the discovery that Raul Moat was believed to be in the vicinity of Rothbury (my son is at school there). He eventually got home at about seven this evening.
I feel desperately sorry for the victims, but cannot help feeling a little sorry for Moat himself. If the police end up having to shoot him to protect the public (and it looks as if that is what they are preparing for), then so be it, but the guy is clearly troubled with a capital 'T'.
Most people I speak to find my sympathy hard to accept. I can understand that, but I struggle with the concept of people being driven by pure evil. My experience of life suggests to me that many of us are not all that far away from breaking point from time to time.
I just hope that there is no more bloodshed.

Hi Martin - glad your son is okay. I agree with what you say about Moat - it's a tough call - allegedly he was on medication when in prison which he stopped taking on release. If they don't shoot him I would guess psychiatric case - secure hospital.
There is such a thing as pure evil and when you meet someone who is just that,one look into there eyes and you will never be the same after it.
Not saying this guy is,I don't even know the story.But pure evil dose exist.
And sometimes killing these guys is the only option available.
Two days later, the 'net is still closing' but no sign of this bloke being caught.
I have never seen so many armed police - there must be hundreds of them.
If Moat has buggered off to Blackpool there will be some very red faces among the local senior police officers. I dread to think what this must be costing.
Let's continue to hope this ends soon.

If they'd offered a £500,000 reward on day one, somebody would have dobbed him in within minutes and they'd have saved about two milllion quid.

They would never do that - the cops love this sort of thing. I have seen an 'Armed Response Team' in action in an incident I was involved in - body armour, helmets, Heckler and Koch assault rifles - and they are well up for it. You don't go into that game if you don't get off on it.
Also they will be treating it as a Live Exercise for dealing with future, more serious, situations.

My sons partner is manager of Rothbury co-op what a lark..
No faith in Northumbria the change from shoot cops to shoot public is made up tosh to allow them to shoot him cold.
I wonder if they still prefere the card system instead of computers

Hmmm... "King shit cop" and "Jerkwater USA" spring to mind over this issue. My time during the 1980's with a special regiment within the T.A. based in Leeds taught me that you do not f*** with a 9mm anything unless you really do have a death wish. Be sure of one thing though, if this guy is found out and about playing Rambo, the chances are he will die.

BBC News Channel have coverage. It seems they have him surrounded and he's got a sawn-off shotgun pointed at his own head.
We often take the kids out where the stand-off is taking place.
Will the guy top himself or will the negotiators talk him down?
This is all happening about five miles from my house. NOTHING ever happens here - nothing at all......

Police say there are negotiating with a man fitting the description of fugitive gunman Raoul Moat in Rothbury.
People in the town have been told to "go home and lock the door" by armed officers.
No arrest has been made. Moat is wanted over the shooting of his ex-girlfriend, her new partner - who was killed - and a police officer.
An eye-witness Chris Robertson said he had seen a man resembling Moat with a gun pointed at his neck.
Speaking on a mobile phone from inside the exclusion zone, he told BBC News: "There was a man down by the river with what appeared to be a sawn-off shotgun pointing at his own neck.
"He was about 150 yards away.
"I wasn't sure it was Moat, he seemed bigger, unless he was wearing padded clothing.
Eye-witness Judith Ellis: "We were driving past and I saw police snipers"
"Then the police came down and pointed their rifles at him.
"Basically we are under siege here."
Peter Abison, also in the exclusion zone, said he could see a man with a shotgun under his chin.
He said: "He's been lying down, and he only sat up about five minutes ago.
"There are about 20 armed officers lying down pointing weapons at him.
"It looks as though the police have it under control.
"One man is not wearing any uniform but is sitting down.
"There's been no movement from any party for the last hour.
"It's a stand off."

'Playing Rambo' is right. He is just some sad chancer who lacked a real life role model when he was kid. You can't learn it all from John Wayne films.
Just like to add that I would not want to have my previous comment interpreted as a criticism of the individual officers on the ground. I do not doubt their professional ability or judgement.
Raoul? How do get named Raoul in Gateshead? After whom? At the end all you get is an alliterative headline. "Raoul's Roid Rage" Sad.

People are shooting each other EVERY day! In cities like London, Liverpool Manchester and Belfast. The only difference here is that it happened in a quiet village where these things are 'not supposed to happen' I suspect the guy knew he would be locked up and probably never get out so decided to finish it. It is sad that people were shot of course, but I don't think it deserves the kind of media circus we see every day on the news these days.
That earlier comment about him maybe not having a role-model as a kid rings true with so many boys these days. They're not taught to be humble when small either and IMO they grow up not repsecting anyone, least of all women/girls - just my opinion, but it's something I see.
Interestingly, the main "problem" kids at school almost always have fancy names - boys and girls, which is often something to do with their parent's attitude and mind-set I'm told.

Suspect he's the guy firing a 'tazer' at Moat. I'm sure many combatants have 'silly' facial expressions during the heat of action.
