A Wolf in Sheeps clothing?

This is about one of my most favourite amplifiers!


I grabbed this because it was advertised locally, as faulty. Except it wasn't faulty and I could see the mistake..... It has EXT on the back which needs a phono cable to be used as a jumper otherwise you get no sound (If not using the matching Graphic Equalizer).

I am talking about this amp:

Technics SU-X502.

Now don't get me wrong, this one is not in bad condition... but needs a really good clean and the fan is clogged full of dust which means it doesn't quite spin as it should!

But. It's been playing for a good few hours now and sounds superb, for a run of the mill amp... its a good one! More inputs than you can shake a stick at. Sounds good playing CD and Vinyl - Vinyl being my main source!

I have this amp matched to the speakers it would have come with back in the day (Technics SB-CS70) and a little tip with these amps is if you are using the matched speakers....make sure you set the Active Current Sensor button on the back to on, and if you are not then set it to off! I forgot how loud this amp was too, I have had to be careful with the volume!

I do run an audio business and could choose whichever amp I wanted - but this is nostalgic and works fine for me at home!

So I think some of the Technics stuff is underrated and these amps are superb for what they are plenty of power for me and sound decent indeed.



Now to go find an SLP-J38A matching CD player.......

Have modified this amp slightly... Took the lid off to give it a cleanout as you do. Mainboard is very brown from heat as well as some of the caps. I have figured that the fan doesn't kick in until you really ramp up the volume... well that's not all of the time but with it being a Class A, runs hot... even at a low volume so it's having an effect to the components with heat...So I have wired up a 5V Power supply plug to the fan, I could have perhaps soldered it to the mainboard by finding an appropriate 12v track, and its an idea... but thought I'd do it this way so that fan runs after I have turned off the amp. Cooling it whilst it's off rather than it slowly cooling without the fan running because powered off.
Permanently there will be the fan running on a 5v power supply.
This might help with the heat issue hopefully, I have the amp on at the minute and it is hot but the air is being expelled at the rear, and it does seem cooler. This is at a low volume too which is 90% of the time.

A worthy mod I think. I wonder if all Technics amps run the fan only at full tilt rather than at low volume.


If you have one...it might be worth checking.
