Hello from Derbyshire

Hi all,

I live in an old mining community not too far from the M1.
I made some Frugel Horn Mk's 3's in 2011 after listening to some Needles for a few years.
They do sound a lot better, though the Needles satisfied me for a few years.
And so it goes on, still listening to the FH3's, 2 amplifiers later.
In the middle of making a John Linsley Hood Class A now.

Hi Jim. It's good fun making your own speakers....they always sound better than the professionals:D

I made a JLH 10w Class A a few years ago. Very nice sound. I was using some Fostex or Lowther based Back Loaded Horns at the time and it was a very good match. I lent it to a mate and one channel went down. As I don't have the horns any more I haven't bothered to fix it. Shame really the heatsinks cost a lot of dosh.

What sort of music do listen to? Have fun here.

Thanks for the welcome nice of you, shame about your JLH, I first heard some Lowthers at a HiFi show at a hotel near Heathrow, got to the Lowther room with a headache, bloke made us a cup of tea and asked us to choose a record. Drank the tea, very welcome it was too, my headache went, told the bloke, he said they have that effect on people. He went on to say that they did demo's in St Pauls and filled it with a pair of their flea watt valve amps. I could never afford or even have the space for some Lowther's but I reckon I ain't far off it with the FH3's.

As for music, Bessie Smith's acoustic recorded stuff, Billie Holiday not the 40's 50's rubbish but the pre-war stuff. Beethoven symphonies, Mahler symphonies, Chopin and the 'new kid on the block' Tiffany Poon, great player, great kid on YT, the MJQ, Norah Jones, The old Tangerine Dream 70's 80's and the new stuff, back to just three of them, a wall of full range sound that's leads on directly from the old stuff, electronical symphonies in my opinion. And The Goldberg Variation's, Glenn Gould's 2nd go at it, as abstract as Mahler and now TD carry the banner. I remain fairly silent about Schoenberg et al bit of 'up the creek without a paddle'.

Welcome to AoS Jim.

I too knocked up a pair of those 10W Lindsey Hood amps described in Wireless World, before moving on to the Nelson Jones design (also published in Wireless World).

At University I spent some time with a pair of Lowther Acoustas (with PM6 drive units) powered by a pair of 15W Quad II amps, so I know what you mean by the efficiency of horn loaded speakers.

Interesting tastes in music; not sure I would agree with you regarding Schoenberg - but I did have to persevere.
