View Full Version : Good transistor integrated amps.....

My continuing love affair with valve amps has brought me more than my fair share of heartache - the little glowing bastards have it in for me, just waiting for the right moment to ruin my listening pleasure by catching fire, making strange noises or otherwise misbehaving.

Undeterred by my latest tragedy (for those of you who missed my thread, one of my OTL valve amps decided to spontaneously combust the moment I left the room to put the kettle on), I have decided to invest in a good backup amp to keep me going while my tube amp of the moment is in intensive care. All of my previous valve amps have done the same - sounded great, broke, got fixed, sounded great again, broke again etc etc.

So I am going to buy a good, solid, reliable transistor integrated.

I'm thinking of allocating roughly £500 and would be looking at the used market.

My current speakers are Jericho Horns, which are pretty sensitive (about 96 dB, I think), but I do like to change things from time to time, so ideally I'd be looking for an amp that would be happy driving a fairly wide variety of speakers (from horns to average sensitivity floorstanders).

I need a minimum of three inputs and already have a decent phono stage.

Remote control optional (nice to have, but I can do without).

Most of my listening is classical, jazz and acoustic folk/blues. I don't want to blow the windows out, but I do like to listen at realistic levels.

Sonically, I seriously doubt I'll find a transistor amp that will emulate a good tube amp (not at £500 anyway), but I value a natural sound with decent soundstaging and accurate tonal colours more than I need piledriving bass and astonishing detail (no artificial 'brightness' thank you!). Class A appeals - I was rather fond of the old Musical Fidelity A1000 some years back. As a guide, I also liked the Quad 77 integrated I owned not long ago (a lot less than £500 - more like £175 these days, so it's on my list).

Any suggestions to add to my (thus far very short) shortlist?

Cheers

Martin

I don't think you need to spend that much unless you are desperate to throw money away! As I advised earlier, buy a Hlly T-amp from ebay.Either the T-amp 10 or 20 would be plenty for the Jerichos.See here-

Honestly, these are very good indeed.I had the 90,but that will be far too much power for you.I'd say the 20 will be plenty. At the price, why not give one a go? Not much to lose,I'm sure someone here would buy it if you didn't like it.

I was going to mention one of the Cambridge Azure models, as they are properly designed, have a "laid-back" tone, which could be interpreted as a lack of "solid state" nasty odd order distortions and they look to be well made as well.

A god old classic which will need some work on the caps (and it's a pita to dismantle and re-assemble) is the dear old A&R A60, which is musical in the proper sense.

Hi Martin,

You can try a modified (by me) second hand Cambridge Audio A3i. I am using one in my system and can make another one for you for £200 + postage? If you don't like it you can send it back, no problem, however you may be in for a surprise... . Drop me a PM if interested.

Cheers

Thanks Ali

Having tried the original plastic T-Amp and the rather more refined Bantam version (thanks to Hamish for the loan!), I am both impressed and uncertain. Both amps are capable of jawdropping imaging and soundstaging (almost unbelievably good in that regard), but something just isn't quite right - difficult to put my finger on it, but the bass is rather lacking and the sound as a whole is somewhat 'thin'.

If the hlly addresses that, i would certainly be keen to give it a try - Hamish is also a fan, it seems. In any case, I'm going to have to give him the bantam back at some point!

And you are right - I would rather not spend £500 if I can avoid it. Little people keep appearing in my house and insist on hanging around until they become big people. In the meantime, I am expected to feed and clothe them. What's that all about? Am I a charity or something? Sponging little bastards.
EDIT: According to my wife, the appearance of the Little People is all my fault! Isn't that bloody typical....;)

Hi Alex

I am intrigued!

Will drop you a PM shortly.

By coincidence, I currently own a Cambridge C500 preamp, which is bloody good....

Take Alex up on his offer, you've nowt to lose! Another one to consider, the Sugden A21,the original with the wooden sleeve.A very nice sweet amp IMO.I think it would be a good match with the speakers.

See if you can source a Copland CSA-14. Not entirely SS as there are a couple of double triodes in there.

You can borrow the hlly if you want to try before buy...
It's taken a back seat since my actives (with thier built in digital amps) have come on the scene!

hi, Martin, if Alex's modded CA proves not really attracting to your ears let me know, i have a Meracus Intrare 5 (ss) amp to sell that in my experience is 'the closest' to triode sound - and fits your budget :) even Dave Berriman of HFN&RR raved so in the 2000 March issue about it
