Mission 'DAD7000'

Snap!
I resisted buying a CD player till 1991. The day I bought my new Gyrodec I also bought a 2nd hand one of these for £150 from the same shop - Jack Lawson's place in Glasgow. I went from there to Tower Records (I think) & got a heap of Zappa stuff that wasn't available on vinyl (You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore series) & Carly Simon's Greatest Hits for my wife!!

My first CDP was (I think) a Sharp - bought secondhand in the late 80s.

Truly horrible thing - like having metal skewers poked into your ears while somebody sandpapers your eyeballs. A very, very, painful experience indeed.

I sold it on very swiftly and didn't go near CD again for about 5 years.

Yuk.

The DIN umbilical between main and added sections could get stroppy on the MCD pro, but it was the first machine not to give me a headache after an hour of listening. The B&O CD-X and DAD7000 were good too once warmed up and the B&O is a work of art IMO.

Marantz CD63SE

My first proper CD player was a 63 KI , and I only upgraded it when it started getting fussy about discs and the draw was sticking. (I replaced it with a CD 6000 OSE KI... I tried lots of alternatives, Arcam, Pioneer etc, but this was way above them. When that started jumping 18 months ago, I went buying again, and really didn't want another Marantz... tried the Roksan, Creek and some others, but the SA7001 KI ended up coming home with me.)

But apparently we've got cloth-ears Job - Andre's obviously not a fan! I know Dave (DSJR) doesn't have much time for them either - (and is far more experienced than me), but I wonder why this player divides opinion so much?

Mine still works a bit - I'm getting it out of the loft later today to see if it rips my ears off! ;)

Mine still works a bit - I'm getting it out of the loft later today to see if it rips my ears off! ;)Dust is the problem. When that happen clean out the grooves that the draw slides on and squirt a little silicon grease or similar.
Opening and closing actions become silent and a joy to watch.
Also gently clean the lens using alcohol and a cotton bud stick.

I sold BUCKETLOADS of these things back in the day. You were having a bad day if you didn't sell at least one. I have to admit, at the time I thought they were OK, but hugely over-rated.

That was until I picked one up from a car boot sale for £7 a couple of months ago and started doing all of the tweaks. After spending a further £30 or so on components it now sounds better than my Densen B-410 ever did!!! Not bad considering how battered it looks. I guess it had been left for dead as it skipped like a goodun' before I took the whole thing apart and gave it a very good clean.

27 years on and still working, that must be some sort of record.
They had a reputation of door problems. The CD would not read the disc as the door didn't show fully closed on occasions.
Though mine was fine for the 5 years I owned it. A mate bought it from me and used it for a further 10 years, don't know what happened to it after that.

Like one or two here my first cd player was a Philips CD104 ;) Built like the proverbial tank with a metal draw. I guess at the time it didn't sound too bad :lolsign:

Only problem with them was they suffered with dry solder joints (or was it the through hole plating on the PCB?) & it was hit or miss if it'd work when it was first switched on, given a little time to warm up it seamed to be ok

1983 or 84 i think that was...

It took me nearly 25 years to get another CD spinner with a metal draw, they don't make things like they used to ;)

Like a few others on this thread my first CD player was the Hitachi DA1000. (Sorry about the grainy picture.)

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/VPR5/DA1000c.jpg

I bought it about a month after CD came out and my local dealer let me take home the few available players to try. The Hitachi seemed to be the best of the bunch and I handed over £500. Almost worth the money perhaps as there is rather a lot of stuff inside.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/VPR5/Da1000b.jpg

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t229/VPR5/Da1000a.jpg

The biggest problem over the years was the complicated motorised door mechanism which while fun needed mending several times. The last repair I did properly and made a new linkage lever in brass (the glass loaded resin lever would break).

The last time I did a quick comparison to my Marantz CD12/DA12 the DA1000 sounded pretty unimpressive. But t is still working after some 27 years…:)

i have a KENWOOD branded version of that exact CDP.
it was my very first single-disc CDP. got it at a thrift.

evidently, this model was OEMed by KENWOOD or TOSHIBA
or another firm altogether, and produced for several host
manufacturers. i could swear i once seen an NAD player
with the same chassis as well. the front panel was of
NAD's own typically hideous design, but everything else was the same as the KENWOOD and your TOSHIBA.

my KENWOOD will spin up CD-Rs, but tends to lock up
if you go to skip a track. does your TOSHIBA do the same?

Hi,

Very interesting !

The Toshiba functions fine with CD-Rs on all functions.

Needless to say there are one or two CDs that it just can't read which my other players can, but very few. After 24 years it's been a great buy :)

Come to think of it - I have never owned a dedicated CD player.

In the 80s to early 90s, cassette tape the media I bought and played my music.

By the mid 90s cassette tape was becoming hard to find for prerecorded music of decent quality, I used my family's all-in-one music system (some Sony - can't remember the model) to record CDs to cassette tape.

Sometime around the early 2000s my Aiwa portable cassette player finally died on me & I jumped on to the digital music player bandwagon. Currently my PC and walkman phone serve as my main music sources.

My first was a Hitachi CDA2500/DA 3000 .. not sure... which I bought it in a store in Cambridge. We were 2 weeks in UK with my secondary school in the fall 1986.
I paid 200£, at home it was 300+
I bought 7 CDs while in London; the first was Level 42's World Machine; 9,99£ in a shop near Kingsbury station.
I think that the DA section was only 14 bit, but that was quite common at the time. soundwise hmm didn't matter at the time ... as long as it was LOUD... teenager:rolleyes:

After serious burnin time it died in february 1991. The next day I went down to KT Radio in Brunsgade, Århus, Denmark to listen to a Rotel... but went home with a Luxman D-107u
