Probably you guys have beaten this path before, but can someone please explain to me why almost all modern speakers are ported in some way? Sealed boxes had (potentially) better bass, were easier to place, and, other than a slight efficiency penalty, seemed to be a better overall compromise in many circumstances. So, what happened?

Fashion had a lot to do with it I think, with the current preference for slim floorstanders, ported designs had to be used to get a decent bass response out of them.

ANK is most likely the last of that breed.

Good point. Remember in the 80's EVERYBODY had 12" woofers? Wasn't that like a de facto standard?

My use of 5 1/2" floorstanders w/ sub is a compromise for space rather than a preference. I keep telling my wife when we get a bigger place to be prepared for some space hogging floorstanders. :)

I miss my American-size living room! :(

It's sad cos some of my fav speakers were sealed boxes.

Its a shame fashion has almost killed big drivers When done right they give you a realistic sense of scale and are very addictive

Not very sealed - the door is wide open - anything could crossover... (wah wah waaah!)

Well I guess maybe sealed enclosures were not as nice as we thought! ;)

What about sealed designs employing ABR (Aux Bass Radiator) in which the obvious candidate was the odd Celestion 'Ditton' model..The best one i owned was the Castle Acoustics 'Dover' Loudspeaker. magic stuff. This was the speaker i bought second hand off my mates dad as an upgrade to the 'Ditton 15XR' i had at the time..This is when the Castle bug bit & ended going through every model they made :lolsign: My fav was the first model they ever made

Wouldn't that be 'ABU', rather than 'ABR'? :eyebrows: ;)

Yes, I also rate ABRs - the ones on my Dittons add scale and fill in the bottom end nicely, without any boom or bloat whatsoever!
