Here is what started this thread .
3 years ago Nosheen's back was bothering her and she thought a new mattress would help her sleep better.
We where sleeping on a 400 spring Temperpetic Eastern King that was 12 years old from Sleep Train . A very good mattress in its day around $1,400 on year end clearance. ( Extra Firm)
It was sagging horribly and lost it's support.
So we went to Macy's Oct .2016 because they had a 40% off on Sealy , Stearns & Foster and Beauty rest was also marked way down so they where starting to move the 2016 models out to make room for the 2017 models that usually hit the stores mid Nov. before Christmas so once again our timing was perfect.
We tried at least 12 different beds from $2,000 to the Macys Grand Hotel no longer made $20,000! Eastern King size.
After talking with the manager they made us a great deal on a Stearns & Foster Palace Estate Luxury plush Full Retail was 6,200.00 we got it for 3,200.00 + tax Eastern King size
We got that price on the mattress because we also bought the adjustable motorized frame $1,299.00 The next step up from the one we got was $10,000!
Conner's little twin mattress $1,500.00 . His is 2 years old .
Well nearly 4 years later we are noticing depressions where we sleep ,not deep but they are there .
Is it worth buying expensive beds or do they all need replacing every 5 to 10 years?
What has been your experience? These are the best mattresses we have ever had and I'm sad to see ours begin to loose its support.
Anyone have a mattress last for more than 10 years with out needing replacement ?

Unfortunately cannot see your link except cannot ship to your country. Your budget is well above mine, but here in the uk they recommend replacing your mattress every 7/8 years. Don't know if spending more gives extra longevity.

When you buy that kind of quality it should hold up better. Or you could buy a $2,000 dollar mattress and roll out a foam topper and get the same life.
I have always believed in buying a good bed, my back is pretty damaged (spinalstanosis and 4 compressed disks). Not to mention a zee plasti in both legs and 6 x 4 inches of surgical Teflon in my right leg.
Yet, I get up every morning and work. When the Dr. said I may walk but would never work again. That was in 2006. Here I am climbing ladders, and running floor machines.
I hope to do 9 more years to age 63.

It was very soft ,to soft for our over worked backs. You just melted in . (not saying it was not also very supportive).

David's right, we are advised to change mattress every 7 or 8 years, and nowhere does it say "unless your mattress cost you a shitload of money in which case you can keep it longer" :D
We bought a Tempur bed about 6 years ago, which had been reduced from 3 grand to £1800, and assumed as it was comfy at the time, its quality would ensure it would stay that way. Wrong! We quickly learned that memory foam mattresses are not for us. If I'm anywhere the edge of the mattress it sinks, and the effort required not to fall out of bed makes for a restless sleep. Also I tend to overheat, and the problem is even worse in winter - I get too warm, lift off the quilt, and the cold air makes me need to pee. Can't win :(
So a replacement mattress is at the top of our "needs" list.
"Which" magazine (a UK subscriber-only consumer publication) tested a few mattresses last year and one from Ikea came top for value-for-money. You'll have Ikeas over there, give them a try. We're talking hundreds, not thousands of dollars here.

Both Nosheen and I have a lot of back pain so our bed is critical .
No one is going to beat 20 years!

Vesgantti double mattress for me as i like sprawl space and somewhere for my remotes etc... 10.3" thick, it has layers of CertiPUR-US certified foam and hundreds of individual pocket springs
cost £170 and free delivery(vacuum shrunk in a box). it was so heavy even my mate couldnt get it upstairs.. had to call out my son in law who is built like a brick outhouse..
I have a 4" topper on it for added comfort.

That looks like a decent buy Grant, and only 200 quid for the King size. For the money you can't go wrong really. Duly put on my shopping list :)
it was firm initially, and was better with the memory topper on. ive used that topper for a while and it is nice to have some thickness between you and the hard bit :eek:
I have two pits, I usually sleep on the Airsprung with a topper but the Miracoil’s probably better for my back but is akin to sleeping on a park bench. .

Self assembled pine king sized bed from Sweden, bought maybe thirty years ago and still perfectly sound. Memory foam mattress about ten years old that is turned when the bedding is changed. Very comfy and no sagging, I sleep well generally.
Tried a memory foam topper that annoyed me 'cos it kept moving around, so that went!
Don't use much in the way of sheets & blankets (hate duvets), as I'd sooner be on the cool side than too warm, use no heating in the bedroom. I grew up without central heating and was used to frost on the inside of the windows in winter as a kid :).

yes likewise. These days I just use a sleeping bag, much easier to wash and dry and none of that aggravation of putting the cover back over the quilt. I hated that job. If it's really cold I put a blanket on top.

i just lie on top .. if really cold might use a throw too
Mine is made by Hypnos, was bought years ago and is still in fine condition. Gets turned around and turned over every few months. It's fairly firm as are the pillows - I don't like a soft matress.
Use a 'four seasons' duvet but never use the Winter combination.

A sleeping bag directly on the floor, or on top of a bed?:)
I hope it's the latter, as otherwise you're getting almost no support for your back.

My wife has a bad back - thrown from horse against a wall and two large babies (second one about 10 1/2lbs :eek:), so we have tried a few mattress'.
Worst for me was memory foam - too bloody hot, and despite what they claim not very supportive in my view. Pocket sprung seems to have worked best for both of us,

One very important, not often considered part of a mattress, is the fabric used. I was a delivery driver for a bed & carpet shop. It wasn't much fun lugging a super-kingsized bed or a big roll of broadloom up several flights when they didn't fit in the poxy little lifts at some blocks of flats! :rolleyes:
Done that too, Geoff, when I was younger (not the driving, just the lifting of stuff), and for the same company (House of Fraser)... Bendix washing machines, carpets and glass-fronted wall units were my favs!!:D
Kept you bloody fit though, especially in the height of summer, up seven flights of stairs - plus the tips could be good, as well as meeting some 'bored housewives';)

Aye, that's why I keep my tights on. And yes, I did "test" a few whilst working overtime with the wee blonde manageress at the time - being a bit older, she taught me a few new positions, too...:eyebrows:

When I've purchased mattress's in the past I've always tried them first, I do like it to be on the firm side, since I also suffer with my back, but obviously have to stick within my budget. $18,000 made me go :wow:
I'm sure you must be able to buy a good mattress for $1000, if you needed to change sooner than the 7-8 years I mentioned it would be well within your budget. Sorry to hear about your back problems, most probably staying active is keeping your back more supple. Good luck with your search for a new mattress.

I've got a Millbrook pocket spring mattress, made down the road in Southampton. I love it but it's soo heavy it's a two man lift to turn it :doh:
On top I've got 2 x down/feather toppers which kinda adds some luxury
Topped off with satin sheets/duvet cover
Just missing a guy to go in it ... :eek::eek: :D
You cant flip a pillow top but you rotate it head for toe.
They say that dose nothing though. If two people are using it 'm not getting rid of Nosheen to extend mattress life.

In the U.S.$ 1,000 gets you a roll of foam in a box ,or a reconditioned mattress from a charity shop. Even not so good will coat you a couple thousand now.
Anything made here in the U.S. costs more ,and its hard to import big heavy stuff like a mattress so no outside competition.

We changed our silentnight one last year cant remember which it was but wasnt cheap that lasted bout 7 yr but was memory foam and after a turn round of bedroom didnt suit either of us. Missus was having shoulder op in january so decided would b good time for new mattress, Nipped in Bensons on way home from match 1 day and ended up trying plenty beds before deciding on Sensafoam air stream 900 with mixture of foam n pocket springs with a bit on top to keep you cooler which works better than i thought it would.

There was a perfectly good 3 seat couch left in the same place a couple of weeks back. Grey, modern design, not some 1980s monstrosity. Stuff like that is worthless here and this is a poor neighbourhood..

There was a perfectly good 3 seat couch left in the same place a couple of weeks back. Grey, modern design, not some 1980s monstrosity. They send used mattresses to a re conditioner , they strip it down to the springs , repair and reinforce springs,re foam and recover ,re tag and label . They can not be sold as new because the frame and springs are used.
