Hello from Folkestone

Have been a lurker on and off and recently got some good info I wanted to post thanks for but first ....

I'm a long time DIYer for about 40 years or so. Things evolve slowly round here so most of what I have has been around for a while. Teres TT, Triplanar, Hana SL (very recent purchase) into own design phono; phono stages being an obsession of mine. Line stage similar to Lynn Olson's Raven which is also my headphone amp; Sennheiser HD650. Digital is RPi streamer off a LMS server. Amps are own design 4P1L GM70 PP. Speakers, which is why I ended up here, are Tannoy 15 MG in corner York enclosures.

This thing has to play a wide variety of music as I'm a punk and raver in the past plus I like medieval to early 20 century classical with some jazz thrown in and some other soppy stuff too. I'm lucky to have my own room to play in but things are changing soonish so have to make things look more acceptable and the Tannoys have to get a bit smaller hence a keen reader of Tannoy build threads at the moment.

The other two forums I hang out in mostly are Audio Talk and Hi Fi Haven. Am I allowed to say that? Treason?

All the amplifiers are valve. Phono MC stepup D3a passive EQ 5687 Tx out. Line is 6N6 differential Tx coupled. Nothing in these are regulated and only 1 coupling cap in the whole chain, balanced/differential from phono 2nd stage onwards.

Thanks for that Stephen. I assume you use a TX at the front of your MC phono amp.

Despite the naysayers, modern TXs now have sufficient bandwidth and flat phase response to be acceptable in audio electronics. They are largely ignored in favour of capacitors because they are much more expensive and require specialist design. And since everything is often designed down to a price, they are not used.

The power amplifiers I use are solid state, but use an output coupling transformer to the speaker. Like you, my system is balanced/dual differential from source to speaker.

Your comment got me thinking... 1000 years... Hmmmm. Maybe medieval isn't quite accurate. Should have said renaissance. Cuts it down to 470 years which is still remarkable that music that old is still relevant.

Yes, a step up tx at the beginning. Reckon it comes down to the sonic matrix you like. Nothing is perfect and so pick the colorations you like to mix together for satisfaction. I seem to be allergic to capacitors and have boxes of them. Decent caps cost a bomb so not sure it's entirely cost related but as you say, caps are more flexible esp in the valve world with readily available valves commercially. No value judgement intended.
