my name is Rob and just re-registered as I haven't been here for a long time and my old account did not seem to work. Maybe the admin will spot something odd and delete it. I mostly lurked and didn't contribute much back then, sorry!
I am a Tannoy fan & built a pair of RGRF cabinets for my 15" Golds about 8 years ago (long story which I might share in another thread) I power them with a Hafler 220 and Vacuum State Four Valve Preamp (FVP) which is a locally made pre-amp with a MOSFET phono and valve line stage. A Rega Planar 3 (1978) with RB300 arm (1995) and motor upgrade (2015) and ADCZLMK11 moving iron cartridge I acquired in about 1982. Sony XA7ES CD player given to me a while back gets plenty of use and I use an old Yamaha HT amp integrated into the analogue system for watching movies. I use a switch for HDMI, connected to Apple TV3 (Netflix/iTunes) and OPPO DV980-H player which hasn't been used much since Video Ezy shut down. I don't have a TV so use a BENQ projector.
I'm a cable sceptic who thinks $15 is about as much as needs be spent on interconnects. I have a bit of tinitus, about 8kHz mostly in the left ear, so maybe that's the issue, but was also cured after spending $75 on a pair of Monster cables which was a lot of money back in the '80's but made no difference whatsoever!
Musically I switched to mostly classical back in the '90's but play some 70's & 80's rock - the old favourites - and attend the Sydney symphony occasionally. New bands pique my interest occasionally and I really enjoy listening to other people's music, especially around a camp fire, something I do each year with a few old mates.
I got involved in local politics about 10 years ago (which I promise I won't discuss here!) so the HI-FI hobby has been on the back burner, though I have experimented with sub/sat systems to replace the Tannoys and the lid is off the Arcam AVR300 in the garage at the moment. It won't select SPDIF inputs, hence got replaced with the bullet-proof $50 used Yamaha HT amp, and if anyone knows how to control the fans and fix the volume control feel free to advise. Otherwise it works fine.
Thanks for reading.
